...wasn't even close. TheMicrosoft Tablet PC was announced in 2001, and tablets built to its specifications were released in 2002, eight years before the iPad first appeared. That same year, Microsoft Pocket PC 2002 was developed for smartphones. (It later became Windows Mobile, and now is Windows Phone.) Apple got around to building its first smartphone, the iPhone, five years later, in 2007. Apple has long been portrayed as the technology world's leading innovator, coming up with visionary ideas well before anyone else and creating entire product categories from scratch. Microsoft has been thought of as an unimaginative plodder, waiting for others to develop innovations, and then coming in with brute force and cornering the market with big marketing budgets and smart business moves. In fact, though, Microsoft has been out front on a number of occasions. It's not that it can't innovate. It's that it doesn't do a good job of turning innovations into market-changing products. Take the Tablet PC. At the time, it was certainly innovative. But Microsoft never figured out how to make a marketable product out of it, largely because the company thought about it as a traditional computer in a different form factor -- essentially a tablet-based Windows PC. In a press release at the time, Microsoft described it this way: "The size of a legal notepad and half the weight of most of today's laptop PCs, the Tablet PC is a full-powered, full-featured PC." Full-priced, too, typically costing $2...

Mobile Computing

...A View of the Ways Mobile Computing Has and Will Affect the Nature of Humans in Our Future Theresa McCray INF 103 Computer literacy Denton Murray Jan 28 2013 Mobile Computing is evolving faster than lighting it would be wise to be knowledgeable about the subject. In this paper I will explain what mobile computing is and will give examples of present day devices and their used as well as give some examples of what the future may bring in the way we compute in the future. Mobile computing past, present and the future Over the past years we have evolved into a new era of mobile computing, one that guarantees a wide variety in application, improved usability, and faster networking. Apple’s iPhone 5 is a prime example for the trends were heading into, but there are plenty of other options on the rise. Google Android made its appearance in 2008, offering a great alternative to apple devices. Apple had control of almost all computing systems since it was the only platform that could be used in mobile computing. Google brought competition to Apple allowing people to have a choice and the competition caused by...

Management Information Systems

...Management Information Systems: A Research Paper By Greg Butler Student ####### American Military University MC302 D002 Summer 07 October 23, 2007 Management Information Systems: A Research Paper Executive Summary. In April 2004, after a year of planning, preparation, and training, the City of La Quinta “went live” with an enterprise-wide, integrated information system for the first time in its 22-year history. For the roughly one hundred member staff, it was a revolutionary leap. Previously, each functional department had selected, purchased, and implemented its own best solution to facilitate day-to-day operations. The implementation of SunGard’s HTE NaviLine software required infrastructure improvements and behind-the-scenes setup. The result was several databases for common use among departments and several automation improvements to previous transaction processing systems. Functional departments, individually and collectively, are able to spend more time concentrating on serving customers and less time searching City Hall for a needed piece of information. Implementation in two final departments will lead to even better service, particularly for those in the development community. The system is challenging, but powerful by virtue of its use of a multi-platform IBM® System i™ server. It is moderately user-friendly by virtue of NaviLine’s Web browser interface. Several improvements are necessary to make the system truly great, but in its current state the system...

Lenovo Case Study

...company expands in Hong Kong that allowed them to raise its capital and overcome Lenovo’s previous experience in the global IT industry with a more international partner. In 1988, the company was restructured into Legend Computer Group Co. In the early 1990’s, the company was the largest among several domestic PC makers. In 1992, as the tariffs on imported PCs in China were reduced and import quotas were eliminated, foreign PC makers had a distinct price advantage over Legend. Consequently, Legend became sales and distributive representatives of American and Japanese computer companies in China. However, this became very strategic for Legend as it developed both technical and management expertise from its Hong Kong operation and from its foreign partners such as HP. Legend gain an advantage in building extensive distribution channels when the Chinese government restricted establishing distribution and retail operations of foreign companies in China. Legend introduced its self-branded PC in China that let it be the largest PC brand in China after a few short years. Legend put its most effort in building a nationwide distribution network. Over the next few years, Legend’s PC marketing business slowly overtook its add-on card business. However, its own brand still trailed foreign brands until 1996. Legend introduced the...

Ipad Technology Workplace

...With the seismic shift in recent years to the way pharmaceutical organizations approach sales and marketing, physicians are demanding alternate methods of interaction with sales representatives. All the while, patients are relentlessly searching for disease state and treatment information that can provide them with an understanding of their condition and even help them cope.  The evolution of mobile technology and its integration into a brand’s sales and marketing strategy can be the key to building value-based relationships with physicians and patients that last.  Pharmaceutical manufacturers face increasing pressure to refine their strategic and operational approach to sales and marketing. In the primary care setting, physicians typically give a pharmaceutical sales representative less than thirty seconds per interaction, most of which is time spent signing for samples. In specialty therapeutic areas, sales reps receive much longer periods of time but still struggle with their ability to differentiate themselves through clear, concise, and interactive messaging delivered to each physician, while also dealing with the challenge of increasing their effectiveness. This need is motivated by a quickly changing industry landscape driven by healthcare reform (HCR) and an expanding web of strict government regulations. This includes gift ban laws, aggregate spend compliance/sunshine laws on both the state and the federal level, and diminishing physician availability because of...

Consumer Electronics Industry

...Tablets Over the next Decade 1. Introduction A tablet PC is a wireless, portable personal computer with a touch screen interface. The tablet form factor is typically smaller than a notebook computer but larger than a Smartphone. Bigger and Brainier than a smart phone but smarter and sleeker than a net book, tablet computers have revolutionized the way in which modern day consumers experience and fulfill their computing and communication needs. The credit of pioneering this field and creating the market segment goes to Apple with launch of i-pad in 2010 and once again proving its capability of a leading innovation driven firm which redefines the course of overall computer industry as a whole from time to time. Since then the tablet sales have seen unexpected momentum in terms of growth in sales figures worldwide with apple emerging as the largest supplier till date as compared to all others. However, Android based tablet PCs are expected to take over Apple’s share in the coming years. The world has seen aggressive competition among tablet PC manufacturers after the launch of iPad from Apple. Within five months of the release of iPad, Samsung launched its Samsung Galaxy Tab to compete with Apple. Since then, the tablet PC manufacturing industry has seen the emergence of numerous players. Most tablet manufacturers such as Asus, HP, and Lenovo among others released their models of tablet PCs in quick successions, but none of them could surpass Apple’s...

...features, for example watching video contents from the web whenever they wish to, accessing Internet, even want to have social network services, Facebook or Twitter. Accordingly many big TV manufacturer acknowledged new demand in the market and it led them to produce interactive TV, so called smart TV, of which is connected to Internet offering wide range of service, such as, on demand video steaming, running applications. Although it is still in infant stage, many people predict it will grow fast to suppress the traditional TV within next five or six years. Concept behind new business opportunities is to make Smart T.V. integrated with motion sensor that is able to recognise human motion or gesture. Basically it is a mix of tablet PC and smart T.V., which can be controlled by human gesture.
