Executive Summary In the process to build a better peanut butter cracker sandwich we have made a production process to make a better sandwich that can be produced at a fast rate and for very little money. During a pilot run many errors were found that needed to be improved upon but we have come up with a few ideas. First we needed to change the duties of one of the operators. Second we needed to change the speed of the process. By doing this we feel that the production can produce a higher profit.

Introduction In an effort to create a delicious healthy snack for kids a pilot production run was completed for peanut butter & cracker sandwiches. This pilot run was held in order to perfect the process of the sandwich making procedure and to better see the flaws in the manufacturing process. It was also held in order to find out what must be done in order to profit from this business. The peanut butter and cracker sandwich is a delicious snack for all who like peanut butter. It will provide a healthy snack for young and old alike.

Data Our production process involved three operators in an assembly line technique. The three operators were titled Operator #1 (Op1), Operator #2 (Op2), and Specs Operator (Spec). Op1 had the primary duty of starting the process. This person was in charge of obtaining one cracker and placing the correct amount of peanut butter onto the center of that cracker (see Fig 1). [pic] Fig 1 A dollop of peanut butter

The peanut butter was placed on the cracker using a simple melon baler as a spoon (see

Fig 2).

[pic] Fig 2 The common melon baler

This was done to be able to put the correct amount of peanut butter on every time with repeatable results. Op1 would then pass the started sandwich on to Op2 and start a new sandwich. Op2 was in charge of completing the sandwich by placing another cracker on top of the peanut butter and pressing down on the top cracker in order to make the sandwich a completed sandwich (see Figs. 3,4). This operator was also in charge of checking to make sure that there was no overflow of peanut butter off the edge of the sandwich. [pic] Finally the Specs Operator would receive the sandwich and was in charge of checking that the cracker met all specifications. In other words this operator was the quality control operator of the system. Each sandwich would be placed on the scale to check for weight. Spec would then check one out of every five sandwiches in order to be sure the height of the sandwich met specifications. Spec’s final duty was to place the finished sandwiches into the bags at ten sandwiches per bag. If at any point during the process the sandwich broke or for some reason didn’t meet standards, the operators were instructed to toss out the defective material and start over. This was done so that no time was wasted trying to fix mistakes. For a more detailed view of each operator’s individual duties see the flowcharts in Appendix 1. The Specs Operator’s primary job was to check for quality assurance. We wanted to have someone checking the sandwiches during the process so that we could be sure that all the sandwiches were meeting the required specifications. Along with meeting the specifications we also had to make sure that each operator followed proper food handling techniques. This includes washing hands before hand, wearing gloves before handling the food, and working on a clean work table (table was covered with wax paper). During their training we instructed each operator on safe handling technique and their individual job duties. In order to make one single sandwich you must include the price of the crackers ($0.02 per cracker), the peanut butter ($0.003 per gram), and the plastic bags for the finished product ($0.009 per bag @ 10 sandwiches/bag). Knowing that it takes two crackers to make a sandwich and that it takes approximately 4 grams of peanut butter, and that it takes 1/10 of a bag per sandwich, it costs approximately $0.0529 for a single sandwich. You then have to add in products used.
|Item |Cost of Item |
|Melon Baler |$2.02 |
|2 knifes |$2.00 |
|Plastic Gloves |$0.06 |
|Wax Paper |$1.49 |
|Total |$5.57 |

The final thing included was the hourly pay for the production operators at $15.00/hour. The pilot run was only ten minutes long so each operator was paid $2.50. For the pilot run we ordered the following
|Item |Amount Ordered |Cost of Single Item |Total |
|Crackers |180 |$0.02 |$3.60 |
|Peanut Butter |360 grams |$.003/gram |$1.08 |
|Plastic Bags |9 |$.009/bag |$.081 |
|Total | | |$4.82 |

In all the production costs of this pilot run was $17.89. After the pilot run we found that our income was only $4.20 which gave us a total loss of $13.69. This however included some excess inventory. We ordered five sleeves of crackers but only used 2.5 sleeves and likewise with the peanut butter we had about half of it left over. After all was said and done, we had a yield of 28 good sandwiches in ten minutes, and 3 bad ones.

Discussion After observing the operators from the pilot run we observed a few changes that we would like to make in the process that would hopefully change the outcome and instead give us a profit instead of a loss. First we would like to change the responsibilities of Op2. This operator was given too much down time in the process. This person had to sit and wait for the first operator to finish putting the peanut butter onto the cracker before he/she could do anything. We would like to propose joining the jobs of Op1, and Op2 into one job. We still feel that it would be best to operate with three people though. Now instead of passing from operator 1 to 2, the Operators would make a complete the sandwich and then pass the sandwich on to the Specs Operator. This person would then check two sandwiches at a time instead of just one. We feel that this would double production. We didn’t make a profit in the pilot run, but we do feel that if we made the first and second operators do the sandwiches at the same time that they would produce twice the yield.

Conclusion While doing a pilot run for the manufacturing of peanut butter cracker sandwiches we found out many things. We found that we weren’t making near enough sandwiches to make a profit. We also found that our costs were growing faster than the income and therefore would make us go broke if we didn’t change. We feel that by changing one of the operators’ duties we can change the yield to make a profit that would benefit the company.

Redro Fish Spread is a native product in South Africa that was introduced as a substitute for Britain’s Peck’s Anchovette. The product became so popular once released that it spent thirty years as a monopoly in the spread industry. The spread comprises of fresh Anchovies, Mackerel, and Pilchards and is marketed as a fun snack for children. 2. What cultural or social barriers may be keeping the product from enjoying success in the US? When Americans choose a spread to put on sandwiches or crackers, anything salter than mayo or butter is uncommon. A cultural barrier to this product is America’s desire for sweeter spreads such as Peanut Butter and different types of Jellies. Geographic locations also depict the distribution of this salty spread. Fish spreads and concentrated yeast extracts are more commonly found the eastern hemisphere where saltier spreads are in demand. America simply doesn’t have the taste for these products. 3. How can you mitigate these barriers? One way to mitigate these barriers is to introduce the product in grocery stores that sell foreign food such as World Market. As a matter of fact, it is an excellent source of high protein and energy. Peanuts have many uses. They can be eaten raw, used in recipes, made into solvents and oils, medicines, textile materials, and peanut butter, as well as many other uses. Popular confections made from peanuts include salted peanuts, peanut brittle, shelled nuts (plain/roasted), and peanut butter (sandwiches, peanut candy bars, peanut butter cookies, and cups). Peanut butter is popular in North America, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, Australia and parts of Asia, particularly the Philippines and Indonesia. It is mainly used as a sandwich spread, sometimes in combination with other spreads such as in the peanut butter and jelly sandwich. The United States and China are leading exporters of peanut butter. Peanut butter (and peanuts) provides protein, vitamins B3 and E, magnesium, folate, dietary fiber, arginine, and high levels of the antioxidant p-coumaric acid. The European Union is the largest consuming region in the world that does not produce peanuts. All of its consumption is supplied by imports (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peanut). Consumption of peanuts in the EU is primarily as roasted-in-shell peanuts and as shelled peanuts used in confectionery and bakery products. Between Two Slices of Bread

...1301 Ms. Gerl November 2, 2012 Between Two Slices of Bread Peanut butter and jelly sandwiches are by far the best sandwiches in the history of food. However, many people ask what it that makes this sandwich so delicious? Many argue that it’s the creaminess of the peanut butter. Others would argue that it is the sweetness and fruity flavor of the jelly. One thing is certain; without each other peanut butter and jelly would not be the success they are today. Peanut butter comes in many different varieties. From chunky, crunchy, smooth, spreadable, and just regular old peanut butter, almost everyone enjoys the taste of peanut butter (except those who are allergic to peanuts of course). The greatest thing about this delicacy is how it goes well on nearly everything. Peanut butter and apples, peanut butter and bananas and peanut butter with celery, the combinations are delectable and endless. Peanut butter is not only a yummy treat, it is also great for one’s health. It is full of vitamins and proteins which are great for hair skin and nails. It is also packed with essential vitamins and has been shown to help lose weight. However, this nutty spread would be nothing without its sweet counterpart known as jelly. Jam, jelly, or preserves whatever the preferred name is one thing is certain, it is a sweet, gelatinous paste that some claim is the best part of a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. Unlike peanut butter, jam does not possess the same amount of vitamins and minerals...

Plumbing Around the World

...Jon Reeves 8-27-12 3rd Period Peanut Butter The product that I would like to share research over would be peanut butter. Peanut butter was created by George Washington Carver and was first sold in early 1884. Peanut buter is created when you use a fully grown peanut mixed in with about 400 peanuts per serving. Peanuts are grown nationaly in 15 different states across America. The 15 states are: Georgia, Texas, Alabama, North Carolina, Florida, Virginia, Oklahoma, New Mexico, South Carolina, Louisiana, Arizona, Arkansas, Mississippi, California, and Tennessee. These states all have very high temperatures for growing the peanuts to perfection. To actually make the peanut butter most companies use a heated oven that smelts aproxametly 5000 peanuts at a single time. When the peanuts are fully melted into a creamy texture then they set them off to the side lines for immediate cooling and to be placed on machines. The Machines then add several different flavors such as: sugar, small cashues, or small peanuts, and chocolate for satisfying taste buds. There are multple companies that make the best peanut butter in the world, Jif Peanut Butter has been the number one peanut butter company since 1990's. The Peanut Corp of America

...The Peanut Corporation of America (PCA) is now a defunct peanut-processing company that was founded in 1977 and based in Lynchburg, Virginia. After a substantial outbreak of salmonella in the US in 2008 and 2009 the company was forced out of business. PCA had processing plants in Georgia; Virginia; and Texas. They mainly provided peanut products to institutions such as prisons, schools and nursing homes. They also sold peanuts to food processors who used the peanuts in such things as cookies, ice cream, and other edible products. PCA had a long history of food quality problems in the 90’s, they were sued by the American Candy Company after it was discovered by the FDA that their peanut butter had surpassed the FDA’s tolerance level for aflatoxin a toxic mold. American Candy had already processed the peanut butter into 8,000 cases of “kisses” that could not be shipped to the intended customer Wal-Mart. PCA was sued again in 1991 by Zachary Confections when 40,020 pounds of nuts had unacceptable levels of aflatoxin. Concerns regarding PCA’s sanitation standards had gone back to the mid-1980’s. Late in 2008 and the beginning of 2009 nine people and 714 people from 46 states, half of those children became ill from food poisoning due to eating foods that had been tainted with peanuts this according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Julie's Biscuit

...1991 and a fourth in 2004. Before the participation of the Sai brothers, the company's biscuits were marketed through wholesalers. In 1985, Markins Corporation was appointed the sole distributor in the state of Johor. Gradually, over a period of six years, Markins grew and expanded to eight branches throughout peninsular Malaysia. In the first few years of Perfect Food's operations, it sold biscuits with no brand name other than the company's own. Then in 1987, Perfect Food began to market its biscuits under the brand name "Julie's". As a relatively new biscuit manufacturer, Perfect Food faced some resistance from supermarkets in carrying its products. However through persistence and constant sampling exercises with the now popular Peanut Butter Sandwich, Julie's earned its first supermarket entry at Pakson Grand, Johor Bahru in 1988. The following year, Julie's Love Letters (wafer rolls) gained popularity (also through regular sampling exercises) and soon made their way to become the most sought-after biscuits during festive seasons, particularly Chinese New Year. To expand the opportunity of widening its brand presence in European markets and Wal-Mart outlets, Perfect Food underwent further factory upgrading in late 2005 and was awarded the British Retail Consortium food standard certification in June 2006. Also, in early 2006, Perfect Food was awarded the Industry Excellence Award 2005 by the Ministry of International Trades and Industries. In 2003, Markins revamped...

A Crunchy and Creamy Warzone: How Peanut Butter Almost Killed Me

...My girlfriend is a peanut butter nutter. This is my tale of surviving a creamy vs crunchy warzone. Based on actual events. * * * I arrived back at the flat after a long session of sculpting out perfect pectorals in the gym to face my girlfriend attempting a 'Joey' (see here) before unleashing a torrent of abuse in my direction. The crime? Buying crunchy peanut butter. She acted like crunchy peanut butter was dangerous — saying the nuts inside would cut the roof of her mouth. She was saying that creamy was dreamy. My girlfriend, Leila Sanie, is a creamy peanut butter enthusiast, and she asked me which one I actually preferred. I brought the crunch down on her. An aimless debate sparked and a peanut-buttery bloodbath ensued: names were called, punches were thrown and nutritional facts were read. Things got nutty. I asked how many people in the room knew that George Washington Carver, the creator of peanut butter, ate the crunchy type. Leila and I both raised our hands. One of us wasn’t telling the truth. You see, Leila spreads her lies like she spreads her creamy peanut butter to the very edges of underdone pieces of toast. Some of her peanut butter propaganda included, “I like my peanut butter as smooth as my personality,” and, “That statement is as hard to swallow as your crunchy peanut butter.” It ended up something like this I could’ve let it go. But I, like most Brits, will fight tooth, claw and nail to prove that my opinion...
