The peanut,, is a species in the legume or "bean" family. The peanut was probably first cultivated in the valleys of Peru.[1] It is an annual herbaceous plant growing 30 to 50 cm (0.98 to 1.6 ft) tall. The leaves are opposite, pinnate with four leaflets (two opposite pairs; no terminal leaflet), each leaflet 1 to 7 cm long and 1 to 3 cm (⅜ to 1 inch) broad.

The flowers are a typical pea flower in shape, 2 to 4 cm (¾ to 1½ in) across, yellow with reddish veining. Hypoglycemia means "under the earth", after pollination, the flower stalk elongates causing it to bend until the ovary touches the ground. Continued stalk growth then pushes the ovary underground where the mature fruit develops into a legume pod, the peanut – a classical example of geography. Pods are 3 to 7 cm (1.2 to 2.8 in) long, containing 1 to 4 seeds.

Peanut oil is often used in cooking, because it has a mild flavor and a relatively high smoke point. Due to its high monounsaturated content, it is considered more healthy than saturated oils, and is resistant to rancidity. There are several types of peanut oil including: aromatic roasted peanut oil, refined peanut oil, extra virgin or cold pressed peanut oil and peanut extract. In the United States, refined peanut oil is exempt from allergen labeling laws.

Peanut Allergies

...For more than a decade, peanut allergies in children have tripled in the United States. These dangerous allergies are causing harmful anaphylactic reactions that can lead to death. In 2008 a research team discovered that 1.4% of children had a peanut allergy, more than three times the 0.4% rate back in 1997. (Hendrick, 2010) This is an alarming rise that should not be ignored. The question is, why is this happening? I believe that the recent spike in peanut allergies is partly due to the excessive cleanliness during a child’s developmental years in our society. This phenomenon is known as the Hygiene Hypothesis, which was first introduced by Dr. Erika Von Mutius. During the 1990’s she compared the rates of allergies and asthma in East and West Germany. Before these two places were unified, East Germany was poorer and less hygienic than their neighbors to the West. Dr. Von Mutius hypothesized that the children growing up in East Germany would suffer from more allergies than the children in West Germany. To her surprise she found that it was actually the opposite! As a result from her studies, the Hygiene Hypothesis was born. (PBS, 2001). The Hygiene Hypothesis states that due to our relatively clean lifestyle, our bodies do not need to fight as many germs and bacteria as we did in the past. This results in a shift from fighting infections, to developing allergic reactions. (McMorris, 2007) With the development of antibiotics and the increased emphasis on using products such as...

The Bean Called Peanut

...The Bean Called Peanut When given this writing assignment, I first thought of all the things I know about a peanut. I thought of the simple things like a peanut is a nut that is brown and grows inside a pod. What I did not immediately think about what the actual purpose of this essay—to write about what I observed about the peanut given to me by my instructor. I had grabbed five peanut shells out of the large bag that probably came from Costco. I chose one to observe and I decided on the one that seemed to have the most character on the outside. At first sight, the pod seemed to be brittle and weak due to the breakage of the outer shell which exposed the root-like veins. It was disproportionately shaped where one side was almost twice as large as the other side. The first thing that came to my mind when I looked at the shape of this peanut was the ultrasound picture of a fetus. It was bent in the center and one side looked like a head. I was immediately distracted by the thought of whether the peanut was salted or unsalted, so I licked the shell to find that it was salted. The texture against my tongue was rough and almost fuzzy and I could also feel the pores and veins of the inner part of the shell. I began to rub the shell with my finger and experienced similar feeling as I did with my tongue, but against my skin it reminded me of the how the bottom of my dog’s paws feel. I examined the imperfections of the shell and found a small pin size hole at the tip of...

However, those who purchase peanuts can be broken down into specific segments. Consumers ages 25-44 are the largest consumer of peanuts in the US. The average person consumes approximately 6.4 lbs. of peanuts a year. Studies show women are the main consumers of peanuts in the US. Women also tend to be the main purchasers of groceries and are responsible for 85% of all consumer purchases. This can be linked to the fact many moms are purchasing peanuts as a way to introduce a healthy snack to family members. As a result of the poor economy, many consumers are purchasing peanuts as an inexpensive protein substitute for meat. Due to the low cost of peanuts, they tend to be...

The Peanut Corp of America

...The Peanut Corporation of America (PCA) is now a defunct peanut-processing company that was founded in 1977 and based in Lynchburg, Virginia. After a substantial outbreak of salmonella in the US in 2008 and 2009 the company was forced out of business. PCA had processing plants in Georgia; Virginia; and Texas. They mainly provided peanut products to institutions such as prisons, schools and nursing homes. They also sold peanuts to food processors who used the peanuts in such things as cookies, ice cream, and other edible products. PCA had a long history of food quality problems in the 90’s, they were sued by the American Candy Company after it was discovered by the FDA that their peanut butter had surpassed the FDA’s tolerance level for aflatoxin a toxic mold. American Candy had already processed the peanut butter into 8,000 cases of “kisses” that could not be shipped to the intended customer Wal-Mart. PCA was sued again in 1991 by Zachary Confections when 40,020 pounds of nuts had unacceptable levels of aflatoxin. Concerns regarding PCA’s sanitation standards had gone back to the mid-1980’s. Late in 2008 and the beginning of 2009 nine people and 714 people from 46 states, half of those children became ill from food poisoning due to eating foods that had been tainted with peanuts this according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Test done by Food and Drug Administration and the CDC confirmed that outbreak source and the sickness people were experiencing from...

A Crunchy and Creamy Warzone: How Peanut Butter Almost Killed Me

...My girlfriend is a peanut butter nutter. This is my tale of surviving a creamy vs crunchy warzone. Based on actual events. * * * I arrived back at the flat after a long session of sculpting out perfect pectorals in the gym to face my girlfriend attempting a 'Joey' (see here) before unleashing a torrent of abuse in my direction. The crime? Buying crunchy peanut butter. She acted like crunchy peanut butter was dangerous — saying the nuts inside would cut the roof of her mouth. She was saying that creamy was dreamy. My girlfriend, Leila Sanie, is a creamy peanut butter enthusiast, and she asked me which one I actually preferred. I brought the crunch down on her. An aimless debate sparked and a peanut-buttery bloodbath ensued: names were called, punches were thrown and nutritional facts were read. Things got nutty. I asked how many people in the room knew that George Washington Carver, the creator of peanut butter, ate the crunchy type. Leila and I both raised our hands. One of us wasn’t telling the truth. You see, Leila spreads her lies like she spreads her creamy peanut butter to the very edges of underdone pieces of toast. Some of her peanut butter propaganda included, “I like my peanut butter as smooth as my personality,” and, “That statement is as hard to swallow as your crunchy peanut butter.” It ended up something like this I could’ve let it go. But I, like most Brits, will fight tooth, claw and nail to prove that my opinion...
