Collegetown neighborhood in Ithaca, is the most popular neighborhood among Cornell students. It is so popular primarily due to its proximity to the central campus and nearby restaurants. Furthermore, this neighborhood could be considered fairly dense in comparison to the others. Yet, its popularity and higher than average population density plays a big role in overall satisfaction of its residents and others, who use it as a transit zone to get to their destination. Majority of such student are walking to their destinations and it is important to discuss whether this neighborhood is pedestrian friendly or not. To rate how pedestrian friendliness I will use appropriate categories from the article “Pedestrian and transit friendly design: a primer for smart growth”.…show more content… Among those features are high density and mix of lend use define how many people will walk those streets. Yet, some of the parts of the neighborhood are lacking, or poorly developed fractures, which define pedestrian friendliness. One of the features is the length of the blocks that in some cases will be considered as the high length blocks, which means that people in order to get to their destination should walk much longer. The second important feature is how wide those sidewalk are. With very narrow sidewalks and high pedestrian traffic volume, some streets could be rated very poorly. Collegetown Avenue could be an example of that, since there is constant traffic of people rushing to their classes, or returning home, or simply walking to their friend’s house.
