In the featured article, “The doctor will see you now: How the Internet and social media are changing healthcare. “he author, Peter J Papadakos, justifies his opinion on today’s use of personal electronic devices and distractions it causes in our everyday lives. The roles of these electronic devices effe, ct our healthcare professionals, healthcare deliverers and the relationships between health providers and their patients.
The use of personal electronic devices (PEDs) has gradually increased over the last decade to the point where general population spends countless hours on social media, email, and internet surfing. Cell phones in particular have all kinds of applications for free download so it can make live easier, and better to manage. Our daily schedules are written in them, birthday party invitations come to emails and conversations are done over a text. The continuous advances in technology, and the constant upgrades to those PEDs have completely changed the way we communicate and interact with another human being. Personal relationships are suffering too, the communication have become more electronic in a way, where sending a text message is more common these days that making a simple phone call.
The problem is spreading rapidly; dependency and fascination over their PEDs is a major concern. One of the examples of this obsession over their PEDs is texting while driving. The law passed that hand held devices are prohibited, and that is not stopping people from driving and using them at the same time. Billboards with statistics of accidents from the usage of cell phones is not frightening people enough. The advancing technology of the PEDs has shown addictive behavior not only to the general public, but as well as a distraction to healthcare workers. Constantly checking their personal electronic devices is a huge distraction to the healthcare

Should the Use of Performance Enhancing Drugs in Sport Be Legalized?

...Performance-enhancing drugs (PED‘s) have become a major issue in today’s sports world. Some people may think that PED’s in sport should be legalized because of the fact that they improve the level of sport and that the harm is worth the fame and glory. The negative factors of legalizing PED’s in sport outweigh the positive factors. Performance-enhancing drugs should not be legalized in sport because they take away from the true origin of sport, taking them can lead to life-threatening health issues, and the athletes who are taking them are setting a bad example for the youth who are the future of sport. Sports were originally designed to test ones ability and talent in a certain area. With the introduction of performance-enhancing drugs in 1936, the true origin of sport has been taken over by men and women who insist on being bigger and stronger than their competitors. Athlete’s who use PED’s are making it unfair to the athletes who work hard, train and push themselves to be the best. With the increasing number of athletes who are taking these drugs, it will start to put pressure on the athletes who are not, making them want to take them. Not to mention taking performance-enhancing drugs is cheating. It is an alternative to working hard and training. The athletes that are abusing PED’s are not playing sports for the competitiveness, health benefits or for the fun of sport, they are playing because they want to be famous. This is the leading reason why PED’s are destroying sport...

Steroids Argumentative Essay

...another involved in a “doping” scandal of some type or another. Even the rumor of a sports figure using performance enhancing drugs (PED’s), often brings dishonor and disgrace to the athlete. Are these accusations appropriate or warranted? Perhaps there is a new point of view that would suggest that PED’s should not be banned but only regulated. For a variety of reasons, I propose that athletes should be allowed to use performance enhancing drugs because they already are, and legalization would level the playing field. Performance enhancing drugs should be permitted as long as the effects are understood. When I chose this topic, the first people I discussed it with were two certified athletic trainers. Based on the observations and discussions with Jeremy Bowman ATC, PES (J. Bowman, personal communication, October 21, 2014), and Jamie Stanley ATC, (J. Stanley, personal communication, October 21, 2014), they immediately stated their beliefs were based on the fact that by definition many athletes were already using PED’s. Both thought that athletes who used caffeine, HGH, any ADHD prescription medication, and lab shifting devices such as blood doping were by definition using PED’s. In particular they had observed that athlete’s using ADHD...

PED: Performance Enhancing Drugs

...The term “PED” (Performance Enhancing Drugs) is often referred to as just steroids. Spectators of the game see steroids as the only form of PED’s, however there are other types of them. Such as, Androstenedione and HGH (Human Growth Hormones). All types of PED’s cause harm to the body even if one can not see it. HGH can act as a healant but does cause dangers to the body as it adds extra hormones that the body can not normally handle. For the truth, there are both pros and cons to using PED’s. Perhaps the cons outweigh the pros. For doping in the MLB (Major League Baseball) it has a major effect on the game. It’s a very controversial topic due to arm speeds increasing, baserunning speed increasing and bat speed increasing. This affects the...

Where to Draw the Line

...what about baseball heroes in the 20th and 21st century? Of course there are still some out there playing the game today but are they anything of natural talent like the Babe? When I say natural talent I am speaking about the hard working ball players that don’t need to rely on the Performing-Enhancing Drugs also known as PED’s. Looking back when I was younger I had Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa going at it for the Home Run record, and turns out that McGwire was using the PED’s. So does that still make him a hero? Today in America baseball there is a huge problem that is jeopardizing the great American Past-Time. “There are more than 129 MLB players that have been linked to steroids” (The Steroid Era 1). Most of those 129 players were in the Mitchell report, which was created by Senator Mitchell. You have all your favorite stars and heroes getting suspended from usage of PED’s. Many things have popped up when someone fails a drug test. For example anabolic steroids, weight loss supplements, and even female fertility drugs. When I hear these drugs that these baseball athletes have come across their drug test, I’m asking myself who comes up with this list of PED’s. Where is the line drawled? The line should be a strict line drawled with all illegal substances banned and that if they want to drug test players they need to do so...

...against in the realm of professional sports. This resistance has done more harm than good in a sense in that drug testing fails at what it’s supposed to do. It has led to more players turning to black market labs to obtain their steroids. As drug testing is supposed to level the playing field for all athletes, it truly de-levels the playing field in that so many athletes are cheating the drug test than there are natural athletes. Athletes who are taking PED’s are going to these black market labs that are not controlled or supervised when they are creating these drugs and as a result could potentially harm the athlete’s health. The legalization of PED’s in professional sports will not only reduce the amount of uncontrolled steroid activity in professional sports, but also positively enhance the sport and eliminate the monstrous that PED’s of are deadly. Legalizing performance enhancing drugs will give players the knowledge they need before taking them by informing players of the assumed health risks that are connected to PED's....

Steroid Use in America

...anabolic steroids and performance enhancing drugs (from here on out known as P.E.D’s) has become common place. The uses of the enhancers and those that use them have been vilified over the years by the media and the watchdog groups that say that these things are “bad” and shouldn’t be allowed. On one side we have the athletes themselves that make these decisions knowing that they have to live with the results (good and bad) for the rest of their lives. On the other, we have the media, the pundits, and the critics who basically think the games are being ruined and the athletes are doing more harm than good by taking them. The controversy itself is not new. PED’s have been used since as early as the 1800’s. In the beginning they were used as a way for athletes to gain an edge over their competition in the Olympics. The PED’s themselves were first introduced here in America in the 50’s by a Dr. John Ziegler, after seeing their effects at a Powerlifting meet in Austria (Balko). It was shown then, and even proven today that steroids do in fact, work. They give the athletes the ability to train harder, recover quickly, and can make them “bigger, stronger, and faster”. In fact,...

...PED use in Athletics Performance enhancing drugs have been used by athletes for decades. In ancient Greece, some of the earliest Olympians used substances in an attempt to gain a competitive advantage. The drugs that they would use would either be plant seeds or extracts of mushrooms. Later in Rome, gladiators were known to have turned to drugs. The gladiators would dope for many different reasons, from dulling pain to creating a bloodier spectacle for viewers. In professional baseball, players like Barry Bonds and Jason Giambi were called in front of Congress to discuss steroid use in baseball for two weeks. Congress insisted that steroids were ruining the sport and needed to be banned when, in reality, reported revenues were vastly increased during the steroid era. Congress also preached about a level playing field, but the New York Yankees have a payroll three times that of average teams so how fair can the league really be without a salary cap. This research paper is not on the fairness of baseball though; it is about why a person would choose to do PEDs and how it affects society. Looking at some of the influences presented; it is shown that winning is a major force, a motive and drive; going deeper into winning we conclude that money is one of the major rewards for winning. These are seen as endorsements, contracts, and advertisement opportunities that are very profitable and also sponsor individual players and teams in sports. These revenues influence and encourage individuals...

Doping in Sports

...Doping in sports is a serious matter and should not be used for any sport for numerous reasons. These types of drugs come with serious health risks. First, there are many dangers to the body from steroids. Second, it is just unfair to other players and athletes. Thirdly it could possibly cause a crash in an athlete’s career if getting caught. Steroids and other performance enhancing drugs, PED’s, are very harmful to the body. It is not worth the risk of permanent damage to the body and organs. Most PED’s contain hormones which will cause extreme behavioral changes. People who take PED’s act more aggressively, are more likely to sexually harass somebody, and are generally more violent. So just from taking these drugs the users are effecting their and people that they are with lives outside of sports. The use of any PED is unfair to other players because they are not competing against a person its, the drug. It takes out the spirit of competition. A player that has been on a steroid has an unfair advantage due to the power gained from the drug and not the body. It is basically a form of cheating. PED use can cause a crash in an athlete’s career if they are caught using the drug, because if it gets on the news it would give him/her a bad reputation, the drug will cause the downfall of the athletes career and possibly get the player kicked off the team, it’s a shocking matter for the fans to find out and also winning without relying on drugs is a real accomplishment to a player...

Ped Like Steroids

...I think if people who play sports use PED’s (performance enhancing drugs) like steroids. They are using them at their own risk. I think it should be allowed in professional sports. People who use PED’s are willing to have health problems later on in life like heart attacks and liver cancer. People who use PED’s are much stronger and faster than the average human. Like back when Babe Ruth hit a million home runs. Steroids still worked back in the 1900s but people who use them today the technology is much stronger so they are more effective. When that happens there are greater health risks. It is an unfair advantage when people are using steroids. The people who aren’t using steroids are working their tails off and they are still an average...

Sports and Performance Enhancing Drugs

...Sports and Performance Enhancing Drugs John Alvarez Student #0588681 Essay 2 April 1, 2015 PHI – 010 Professor Andrea Yusim Words: 1,519 In a country that is obsessed with winning and competition, athletes, teams and even fans have tried to gain an advantage against their competition. As athletes become bigger, stronger and faster, the margin and window of opportunity to become the best athlete in their respective sports is surely becoming smaller and smaller. Many people will argue that performance enhancing drugs will help in promoting player health and recovery and that sports in general will benefit overall. In this paper, I will argue that the argument in favor of performance enhancement drug use is not valid because performance enhancing drugs are unethical, create unfair competitive advantages and do not promote the very essence of the value of sports which is hard work and team work. Team and individual sports in the United States is a very important part of culture. Athletes are revered for their prowess and mastery of their respective sports and are at times treated as demi-gods. Individual teams and entire leagues depend on these very athletes to compete at the highest level and with the utmost sense of integrity in order to show that their leagues are played ethically. So not only are athletes expected to be at their very best, they are also expected to do so without compromising the integrity of the sport such as cheating by using PEDs. In the article...

This paper will discuss using performance enhancing drugs will not get players into the Hall of Fame. Players use performance enhancing drugs to gain a competitive advantage over other teams and players. The definition of cheating is violating rules or restrictions to gain an advantage. It’s plain and simple and is a form of cheating. Major league players who got in the hall of fame in the past used their pure natural talent. The purpose of the Hall of Fame is to recognize outstanding natural talent in the sport of Baseball. Look at our beloved long time baseball legends, Babe Ruth, Hank Aaron, Willie Mays, Mickey Mantle, and many more. How would they feel to see professional baseball players cheat their way in and make it easy on themselves? Baseball meant so much to them and to see future players disrespect our baseball legends and allow them to go to Cooperstown, would be awful to past and present players. Baseball fans know players want to give it all and ultimately make it to the World Series and achieve other outstanding goals, but taking illegal drugs is taking it too far. This leads into the major league baseball punishments for using performance enhancing drugs. The major league baseball has punishments for players who use steroids and performance enhancing drugs.
