Penang cuisine is the cuisine of the multicultural society of Penang, Malaysia. Most of these cuisines are sold at road-side stalls, known as "hawker food". Penang has the reputation as being the "food paradise" in the region as it offers a diverse and exotic mix of Malay, Indian, Chinese and western cuisine, which reflects the multicultural mix of the city. It is popular among locals and tourists alike. Local Penangites mostly find these hawker fares cheaper and easier to eat out at any time of the day due to the hawker stalls all around Penang island. So much so that it was recently voted one of the top food destinations by New York Times readers. On February 22, 2013, Penang was ranked by CNN Travel as one of the top ten street food cities in Asia.

Locally known as “hawker food” because it was traditionally prepared and sold by vendors who roamed the streets shouting out their wares, there is a huge variety from noodles to rice originated by the different races which make up Penang’s rich culture. However, we have more than that: we have both street food and home-cooked food, all equally popular with young and old, locals and visitors alike.

One of the food is Penang laksa also known as asam laksa from the Malay for tamarind, comes from the Malaysian island of Penang. It is made with mackerel soup and its main distinguishing feature is the asam or tamarind which gives the soup a sour taste. The fish is poached and then flaked. Other ingredients that give Penang laksa its distinctive flavor include lemongrass, galangal(lengkuas) and chili. Typical garnishes include mint leaves, pineapple slices, thinly sliced onion and a thick sweet prawn paste.

Another food is Penang crispy popiah. Penang crispy popiah is Teochew style spring roll with a filling which consists of turnip, beancurd, egg bits, and a dash of chili paste and sweet sauce. Once you bite u can feel the aroma of beancurd, the unique of the special sauce and the crispy bite of popiah. Nowadays, you can found the Penang crispy popiah at everywhere even though insie shopping mall.

Last but not least, Penang white curry noodle also well know among the world. This popular Penang dish consists of egg noodles in coconut-based curry soup and you can add sambal or chili paste as much as you can based on your spicy level. The main ingredients for most versions of curry mee include bean curd puffs, bean sprouts, cuttlefish, shrimp and cockles. The sambal is the most important to Penang white curry noodle. The main ingredient of sambal or chili paste is good quality balacan(fermented shrimp paste), chili oil and chili paste. Penang still has various types of snacks, main dishes, desserts and beverages. If you have chance you must have a trip to Penang to try all the original Penang food. You will not regret after you taste it.

New York Times

...In early 2010, a young Malaysian financier named Jho Low began making some very expensive real estate deals in the United States. First, a shell company connected to Mr. Low, famous back home for partying with the likes of Paris Hilton, purchased a $23.98 million apartment in the Park Laurel condominiums in Manhattan. Three years later, that shell company sold the condo to another shell company, this one controlled by someone even more prominent in Malaysia: the film-producing stepson of the prime minister. A similar transaction was playing out on the other side of the country. Mr. Low bought a contemporary mansion in Beverly Hills for $17.5 million, then turned around and sold it, once again to the prime minister’s stepson. (Read a summary of this article in Malay.) Mr. Low also went shopping at the Time Warner Center condominiums overlooking Central Park. He toured a 76th-floor penthouse, once home to the celebrity couple Jay Z and Beyoncé, then in early 2011 used yet another shell company to buy it for $30.55 million, one of the highest prices ever in the building. At the time, Mr. Low said he represented a group of investors, according to two people with direct knowledge of the transaction. Mr. Low recently told The New York Times that he had not purchased the penthouse for investors, and that it was owned by his family’s trust. One thing is clear: As with nearly two-thirds of the apartments at the Time Warner Center, a dark-glass symbol of New York’s luxury...

...'schools' OVER the weekend I was glad to have read the history behind Lebuh Bishop (The Star, Aug 10) – a wonderful occasion to go down memory lane. To know that many early schools in Peninsular Malaysia started here on Penang Island makes me proud of Penangites and those individuals who saw through that the education system was established for the inhabitants of Penang. As a young man, I came to know that Penang may be the state in Malaysia where good education institutions may have started. I have heard of a good number of well established schools here. Education institutions such as Dalat and Uplands, and missions schools such as St Xavier’s Institution and the many Convent schools. Mission schools in Malaysia are said to have start in the 1850’s, while schools like Dalat and Uplands started in 1929 and 1955 respectively. I feel that these schools were well-known because of their good and established education pedagogy. Coming from a Catholic mission school myself, I can vouch that mission schools were once very well known for their co-curricular activities such as debating, orchestra, musicals and sports. It was through this wholesome pedagogy that many Penangites lives were touched, shaped and transformed. I am an educator myself, and my recent return to Penang brought to mind some worrying elements. Along Tanjung Bungah Road I noticed sales banners put up by an international school. I remember seeing these banners in 2012 too, and was asking myself if this and many other...

Sellers have been enjoying brisk business since Jan 1 when the state government implemented the policy on a daily basis. Tan Saw Bee, who has been selling tiffin carriers for the last 20 years in Sungai Dua and the Chowrasta Market, said she could sell up to 25 tiffin carriers when business was good. “Of course, there are times when I only have two people purchasing them in a day. Still, the number of people buying them has been increasing,” she said. Tan, 55, said the single-tiered stainless steel lunch box, that could also maintain the heat of food kept inside, was gaining popularity. “It is one of the most sellable items among my tiffin carriers. Customers find it convenient especially for takeaways that come with soup. “They can also eat from the lunch box without having to pour them into any bowl,” she said, adding that these lunch boxes were sold from RM15 to RM17 each. Another seller Ch’ng Ah Sim, 34, said more people were going back to the olden days when people carried tiffin carriers for takeaways. “The sales of tiffin carriers have significantly improved, particularly those that can maintain the heat of the food,” she said. Whichever part of the country you visit, there’s so much for holidaymakers to do, both in peninsular Malaysia and in the separate states of Sarawak and Sabah, on the island of Borneo. Apart from its natural beauty and fantastic wildlife such as orang-utans and Sumatran rhinoceros, the country has great activities, from diving and white water rafting, to golf and bird watching. Penang I was born on Penang, so it’s one of my favourite places. Called the Pearl of the Orient, the little island has been one of Malaysia’s top tourist destinations since the 1970s, when backpackers first discovered its beautiful beaches. I can remember riding around on my moped and camping out with friends when I was a teenager.
