Pendred syndrome is a genetic disorder that causes early hearing loss in children. The chromosome is 7 and the gene is SLC26A4. It also can affect the thyroid gland and sometimes creates problems with balance. The syndrome is named after Vaughan Pendred, the physician who first diagnosed people with the disorder. Individuals who have this syndrome are typically diagnosed young because parents often notice delays in speech and balance problems. Pendred syndrome can cause life-long challenges but is not deadly.
