Pheonix Jackson is a loving, courageous, and dedicated grandmother. She is old and tired but that does not stop her from providing and taking care of her grandson. Her grandson is the only family she has and her appears to be her world. She goes through many obstacles for him along the way. Pheonix shows her love, courage, and dedication for him throughout the story. She shows her love for her grandson by making a difficult long journey into town to get medicine for him. She does not let age or her health stand in the way of providing for him while he is sick. She puts his needs before her own health due to that love she has for him. On page 456 she says “Now comes the trial”, this shows that she is overcoming obstacles to get to her destination. If she did not have love for him she would let her old age get in the way of helping her grandson. Pheonix Jackson shows her courage bye setting off on foot to walk through so many different trials. She never knows what or who she will encounter along her journey. She faces wild animals, different elements of nature and even the possibility of death at mankind's hands.
