People are too dependent on computers
The question is, are people in general becoming too dependent on computers? What would happen if your computer crashed? What would you do if you misplaced your cell phone? If just contemplating about these situations gives you concern, there are others that share your interest. Majority of us rely so much on technology these days that losing it, even for a day, would be very inconvenient, and for many, life-changing. What would your day be like if you were to give up technology for a day? Would your day be ruined if you could not record every moment of your day on Facebook or Twitter (Kirschner, 2013)? Personally, the answer is yes. With the rapid change in technology as it evolves, it has become an integral part of our day to day lives. Everyone wants to be connected without being connected, and in so doing spend majority of their time using computers, smartphones iPad and many other wireless gadgets. We utilize these devices for business as well as personal consumption. Thinking back, my supervisor, and I share the same office space and instead of communicating with me verbally, he would send me an email while staring me right in the face. After sending the e-mail, he would then tell me to check my email.
As a kid growing up without today’s technology, I had to read books in order to complete my assignments. I also had to write my assignment instead of using a key board and focus on learning to write using correct grammar and spelling. Today learning environment is based on computer learning at the initial phase and with the click of a mouse they can gather the information needed to complete their assignment without worrying about misspelled words or handwriting assignment.
A large number will say that they cannot live without a computer/smartphone, and will provide you with numerous reason they cannot. For some, they can work from home that makes their job a lot easier because they do not have to use their brain over to think, and can gather information faster. Another example, a lot of people spend an excessive amount of time on their smartphone surfing the internet and texting and losing the reality with the real world. It has become an even greater impact for those that are a part of the internet social network. Many meets a vast number of friends on line and forget about the ones that they can actually physically reach out to and communicate with face to face. Others find it convenient and much less of a hassle to shop online instead of standing in a checkout line. For many, it’s a way of entertainment, they use it for games, watching movies, shopping, face time, dating just to name a few.
Computer is critical to many businesses. Most major business relies on the use of computer to run their business. Banks use them to connect globally, wall street for stock exchange and aeronautical to control and keep their aircraft in the sky. The military depends on the usage of computer for the army operation and to include the security and defense of our nation, but if not properly manage can lead to disaster. We hear of aircraft falling from the sky, is it just a co-incident or can it be because of electromagnetic interference.
With the rapid change of technology and its advancement, the spectrum usages are going to be much more complex because it is a finite resource. Having a better knowledge of the electromagnetic spectrum, I sometimes wonder how many realized the impact that they have on spectrum usage from using a computer or any other wireless gadgets. There are rules and guideline that governs the usage of frequencies that allows them to use their computer. There is a spectrum manager out there whose job it is to manage and deconflict the usage of spectrum to ensure that there is no interference with other equipment that operates within the same environment.
In the end, the rapid change of technology makes it more complicated. When we use the Internet, we're manipulating the Internet for what it is -- an instrument -- one that does more and better things than past opportunities. With the importance placed on the speed and truthfulness about today’s technology, it is only common sense that we take advantage of the opportunities presented to us. It makes sense that we would choose the method that works (Bator, Young, Alonzo & Payton, 2009). Computer makes our lives easier, so we depend on it, but we cannot get complacent and forget that computers were made by humans and did have a tendency to crash. We must maintain an alternative means to back up our work in case of any unforeseen circumstances.
