In the stories Percy Jackson The Lightning Thief and “The legend of Perseus”, the Legend of Perseus is modernized in Percy Jackson The Lightning Thief by changing the events, Hero Archetypes, and themes. Have you ever wonder how Roman stories are like today and how they are made modern to meet your expectations? Events are one of the main thing modernized from ¨The legend of Perseus¨ to Percy Jackson the Lightning Thief.

The events are modernized through the Hero’s Journey because in “The legend of Perseus” Perseus never meet the mentor and instead journeyed on his own “Perseus bid his mother good-by and set out to search for Medusa” (D'aulaires,117) unlike Percy Jackson who had several mentors Grover, Poseidon, and Chiron (Percy Jackson …show more content…
Perseus is a misfit since he has no money and is a demi-god he has to prove himself worthy to the king “Only Perseus was so poor that he has nothing to give”(D'aulaires, 116) Percy Jackson fits in the archetype misfit as well since he realized he is a demi-god and is unlike everyone else at his school he struggles to read english since he understands Roman (Percy Jackson the Lightning Thief). Next, the Hero type and archetype are also modernized from “The legend of Perseus” by modernizing how they act with the same archetype. Perseus is a misfit and has to continue on his own without anyone else similar to him “Perseus bid his mother good-by...He went over land and over sea.” (D'aulaires,117). Percy Jackson on the other hand, enters camp half blood and he journeys with Annabeth and Grover both demi-gods which makes him feel less of misfit the more he journeys. (Percy Jackson the Lightning Thief). Lastly, the Hero type and archetype is modernized from “The legend of Perseus” by modernizing the they are treated as a misfit. Perseus is assigned a seemingly impossible task to kill medusa so prove himself worthy “Only Perseus was so poor that he has nothing to give..and set out to search for medusa”(D'aulaires, 116-117). Percy Jackson is treated as someone very special as a misfit. He is taken to camp half blood to practice his special talents with others of his kind (Percy …show more content…
By modernized what they have done making them want to redeem themselves. In ¨The Legend of Perseus” Perseus must redeem himself to prove himself worthy after not being able to bring gifts to the king. ¨Only Perseus was so poor that he has nothing to give¨ (D'aulaires, 116). Percy must redeem himself for letting his mother get taken and put into underworld (Percy Jackson the Lightning Thief).Next, the theme redemption is also modernized from Perseus to Percy by changing what they do to redeem themselves. In ¨The Legend of Perseus¨ he redeems himself by going to slay Medusa ¨Slay the monster Medusa and bring me back her head¨ (D'aulaires, 116). Perseus redeems himself by traveling across the US collecting pearls which he uses to leave the underworld once he gets his mother from there. Lastly, the theme redemption is modernized by changing what they do after they have redeemed themselves. In ¨The legend of Perseus” Perseus lived happily with his wife and mother by him afterwards as the king of Argos later founding the city Mycenae then eventually dying and the gods made him a constellation ¨Perseus became the king of Argos...his mother and his wife always at his side… Zeus put them, too, in the sky as constellations.¨(D'aulaires,122). Compared to Percy Jackson which the story doesn't cover much about what happens after redeeming himself and only leaves us with his returning to Camp Half-Blood and catching up with

Percy Jackson And The Lightning Thief Archetypes

...Wisdom and Water in Percy Jackson the Lightning Thief The movie Percy Jackson and the Lighting Thief shows many archetypes; characteristics in a movie or story that are universally understood. In my opinion, two archetypes best represented in the movie are Cataracts of Heaven and God teacher. Cataracts of Heaven in summary is something that can kill yet save lives. In the movie Percy Jackson and the Lighting Thief many events occurred where Cataracts of Heaven was shown. For example, Near the beginning of the movie their was a fight where Annabeth and Percy were fighting and Percy was injured. Once Percy was on the ground, he then touched the water and was healed. This demonstrated Cataracts of Heaven as Percy was healed and given life,...

Something More for Less

...Books are a dying breed. Bookstores are becoming harder to find, and less books are being sold. Movies and TV shows are becoming more popular; ideas for these movies are from books which most people seem to forget. People would rather sit through a movie theater, where they spent 40 dollars on tickets and food to watch a two hour movie, when they could read the same story for only 10 dollars in the comfort of home. With books, we don’t have to wait to for commercials to be over see what happens just turn the page. Also we are able to find out more in the story line that the writers of the movie left out. This means books are always better than the movie. March 23, 2012 was the released date of The Hunger Games the movie. Anyone who saw the movie would say it was one of the greatest movies made that year. It won the Teen Choice Award for the Choice Movie: Sifi/Fantasy. It won the People’s Choice Award for Favorite Movie. This movie if it was not a book first, would be a flawless movie. Like most movies written from a book, this movie has flaws. In the book, the tributes are remade into Wolf Mutts during the final hour of the game. Wolf Mutts were wolves the size of horses and blood thirsty. They also acted like humans in every way. They had the faces of the fallen tributes because that was who they were. This was meant to scare the remaining tributes. In the movie, they only had the eyes of the fallen tributes. When I saw the movie, I was disappointed. This...

Percy Jackson

...Percy Jackson is a demigod, the son of the mortal Sally Jackson and the Greek god Poseidon. He has ADHD and dyslexia, allegedly because he is hardwired to read Ancient Greek and has inborn "battlefield reflexes". He has been expelled from almost every school he has ever attended. Percy's birthday is August 18.[1] In the first novel of the series, The Lightning Thief, he is twelve years old. Like other demigods, he is expected to act as the Olympian gods' agent in the mortal world, taking action when ancient laws forbid direct godly intervention, usually in the form of quests. His personality is described as "changeable like the sea" (a quality he shares with his father) and hard to predict—with the important exception that he is dangerously loyal to his friends and family. He also displays deep regret when he sees others around him being hurt, often even monsters and strangers. His "powers", which start small and develop as the books proceed, include controlling water, making hurricanes, breathing underwater, and talking to horse-like animals and fish. He also becomes an accomplished sword-fighter and leader, as well as being the head counselor of the Poseidon cabin at his demigod summer camp. Percy Jackson's fatal flaw is loyalty, which he at first does not see as a weakness. Throughout Percy Jackson & The Olympians, Percy grows more confident and courageous.[2] After The Last Olympian, the next time Percy is seen is in The Son of Neptune, the second book in the sequel series...

Comparing Percy Jackson And The Lightning Thief

...Percy Jackson is a typical boy with unusual talents; he can truly say that the pen is mightier than the sword. Percy had learning difficulties, an abusive step-dad, and he was expelled from every school he attended. Percy has no friends except his handicapped friend Grover that Percy thinks he is helping, but in reality his friend, Grover is his bodyguard. Percy Jackson, in the Lightning Thief, is a boy with growing confidence, determination and true to his word. I am similar to him because I have these same traits. Percy Jackson shows confidence and determination as he battles all the obstacles on his journey to prove he is not a thief, and in my life when I was homeschooled I showed confidence and determination by joining orchestras and baseball leagues as I was an outsider in most of these....

The Lightning Thief: The Hero's Journey

...In Rick Riordan’s The Lightning Thief, Percy’s experiences align with The Hero’s Journey. Firstly, Percy’s experiences align with The Hero’s Journey because the author describes The Ordinary World and The Call to Adventure. The author shows The Ordinary World by describing a school for troubled kids in upstate New York. The text states “I was a boarding student at Yancy Academy, a private school for troubled kids in upstate New York.” The author showed the call to adventure by describing how Percy’s Pre-Algebra teacher turns into a monster and attacks him, only to be defeated, the text says, “Usually there is some event, or some danger that starts them on their heroic path.” Also, his experiences relate because the author gives examples...
