...Journal of Islamic Banking and Finance Vol. 2, No. 1; March 2014 23 Islamic Banking Scenario of Bangladesh Salahuddin Yousuf1 Md. Ariful Islam2 Md. Rayhan Islam1 Abstract With an aim to explore the current Islamic banking scenario of Bangladesh, this study examines the key concepts of Islamic banking and its history in the world and in Bangladesh as well. This secondary data based research meets its objectives of reviewing relevant concepts, history and current performance of the Islamic banks of Bangladesh through both qualitative and quantitative approaches. From the establishment of first Islamic bank in 1983, this country has currently eight Islamic banks. Except one individual bank (ICBIBL), most of the Islamic banks show remarkable growth in their profitability in the last decade. One reason behind this consistent negative figure in profitability of this bank is the frequent change of ownership. But overall significant contribution of the Islamic banks in the banking industry is visible from the research. This paper provides up-to-date scenario of the Islamic banking in Bangladesh. Keywords: Islamic Banking, Riba, Performance, Banking Industry JEL-classification: E44 G10 G21 1. Introduction Islamic banking and finance is a creation of modern age. Capitalism argues, capital- one of the key factors of production, deserves fixed return whereas the entrepreneurs have to bear all the risks. The conflict of opinions with the Islamic values starts from this very...

...increased the attention on Islamic banking.1 Academics and policy makers alike point to the advantages of Shariah-compliant financial products, as the mismatch of short-term, on-sight demandable deposits contracts with long-term uncertain loan contracts is mitigated with equity elements. In addition, Sharia-compliant products are very attractive for segments of the population that demand financial services that are consistent with their religious beliefs. However, little academic evidence exists on the functioning of Islamic banks, as of yet. This paper describes some of the most common Islamic banking products and links their structure to the theoretical literature on financial intermediation. Specifically, we discuss to which extent Islamic banking products affect the agency problems arising from information asymmetries between lender and borrower or investor and manager of funds. Second, we compare the business model, efficiency, asset quality and stability of Islamic banks and conventional banks, using an array of indicators constructed from balance sheet and income statement data. In separate regressions, we focus specifically on the relative performance of both bank groups during the recent crisis. While there is a large practitioner literature on Islamic finance, in general, and specifically Islamic banking, there are few academic papers. Cihak and Hesse (2010) test for the stability of Islamic compared to conventional banks, while Errico and Farahbaksh...

...BETWEEN ISLAMIC AND TRADITIONAL BANKS: PRE AND POST THE 2008 FINANCIAL CRISIS Mohamed Hashem Rashwan1 The British University in Egypt ABSTRACT This study tests the efficiency and profitability of banks that belongs to two different sectors: a) Islamic Banks (IBs) and b) Traditional Banks (TBs). The study concentrates on the pre and post 2008 financial crisis with an aim to test if there are any significant differences in performance between the two sectors. The study applies the MANOVA techniques to analyze the financial secondary data for only publicly traded banks in the same region. The findings of the study show that there is a significant difference between the two sectors in 2007 and 2009 and there are no significant differences in 2008, which indicates the effect of the crisis on both sectors. IBs outperform TBs in 2007 and TBs outperform IBs in 2009. This result indicates the spread of the crisis to the real economy where IBs usually operate. INTRODUCTION Forty years ago Islamic Finance was virtually an unknown system; interestingly it has expanded to become a distinctive and fast growing segment of the International Financials markets. ... 1.1. Background of Study Based on Law No. 10 of 1998 bank as an intermediary’s institution has an important role between parties who have the funds with the parties who need the funds. Bank compiles the fund from the surplus unit and distributes the fund to the deficit unit in order to improve the standard living of people. In running the business, the bank divided into Conventional Bank and Islamic Bank that run their business in the Syariah principle. Conventional bank gains their profit form the interest rate that received from borrowers and the low interest paid to the depositor (Santos 2000). While Islamic bank actually plays the same role as the conventional bank but it cannot to receive a pre-determined interest from borrowers and also do not pay a pre-determined interest to the depositors. The fee-based banking services are almost same with the conventional bank as long the Islamic bank does not receive and pay the predetermined interest. Interest is prohibited in Islamic bank but it replaced with the profit sharing concept (Arif 2006)....

...Stability of Islamic and Conventional Banks During the Financial Crisis 1. Ratio Analysis The performance and the stability of banks can be quantified and measured through the analysis of their financial ratios. We can have several hundreds of ratios at our disposal. However, we will use only those that are common, and of some meaning for the analysis of the banks. Also, it is important to note that we should use only major and comparable ratios in order to fully understand the financial position of these banks as compared to all those ratios that may include some vagueness in the research. Mainly five categories of these financial ratios are used to eliminate the vagueness created by redundant use of the financial heads and items from the financial statements. Hence, the five categories are: (CFA 2009, p498): - Profitability Ratios - Activity Ratios - Liquidity Ratios - Solvency Ratios - Valuation Ratios However, for the banking industry, which is our main concern, we will use only the first four categories, making an exception of the Valuation category. The financial stability department of the State Bank of Pakistan, which is the central bank of this major economy in the Muslim world, and actively involved in the promotion of Islamic Banking, suggests that the financial ratios fairly reflect the stability, health and the performance of the banks. Hence, these ratios can be used for our purpose. 2. Z-score Instead of just doing the Financial Ratios Analysis, we should...
