Since Larry does not have good control over his blood sugar, he is put at more of a risk for tooth decay and periodontal disease. Another factor that has put Larry at rick for periodontal disease is smoking. Smoking weakens the body’s ability to fight off infections (Anderson, 2016). Since Larry used to smoke and has diabetes, he is at double the risk for periodontal disease and needs to take measures to control both. One thing he has done that has helped him is quitting smoking. If he can get better control over his blood sugar levels now, that would also greatly help with his periodontal disease and limit the amount of bone loss he will experience. Larry’s high blood pressure could be caused by his current periodontal disease and stress that comes along with his job. According to perio.org, poor oral hygiene habits may lead to increased risk of hypertension (“Study: Poor Oral Hygiene Habits,” 2015).
