26 November 2012 Analysis of The Passion of Perpetua and Felicitas There have been many written records discovered since the period of the Roman Empire, and even earlier, though a vast majority of those discovered have been written by men. Documents written by women were incredibly rare, especially taking into account the time period and the role women were appointed for many centuries. One of the very few surviving texts written by women was from a martyr named Perpetua. She was a young women who documented her own struggles, as well as the struggles of another woman and acquaintance named Felicitas. She recorded their fight and strong efforts of living out their faith, expecting a child, as well as their days in prison that led up to her death. Perpetua's diary-like inscriptions of her personal life is now very important and useful in obtaining a glimpse into what it might have been like for women of this era, as well as what her goal was in trying to persuade her audience. The manner in which Perpetua documents the events that lead to her death ostensibly hint at what her purpose in documenting her time was in the first place. Perpetua's calm and collected nature of writing is meant to motivate other Christians at this time to proclaim and stand firm in their Christian beliefs. The Roman Empire, reigning for nearly five hundred years and through the life of Christ, played a significant role in the establishment of Christianity in the later years of the empire. Before Christianity was installed as the official religion, it was mocked and dismissed by many. The Roman Empire, for hundreds of years, never swayed in their religious beliefs. The Romans had a highly sophisticated, developed religious system of worshipping the Roman gods so on the other hand, the minority who followed Christ, or practiced

Socates V. Perpetua

...The Death of Socrates vs. The Death of Perpetua Civil disobedience has been a common element in human behavior. From the time of antiquity to the present, people lash out in various ways against standards that society has placed upon citizens. Two ancient examples of disobedient actions come from different ages revered for standards that hold today and provide a basis for modern law; the Greek and ancient Roman empires. From the Greeks, we have come to know the story of Socrates as memorialized by Plato, and the Roman age was the time of Perpetua, an early Christian woman. The fate of those individuals is the same – a death sentence handed down by the society they lived in. Although the conclusion of their respective lives is the same, the differences that lie in the reasoning of their death run deeper, with several key factors impacting their individual destiny. As we will see, these factors affect their relationship to the states and time periods they existed. Understanding the differences between Socrates and Perpetua rests in two major elements. The first one is the role of religion and understanding of deities. Their respective beliefs affected their relationship with the state that decided their deaths. Beginning with Socrates, we must first remember that Greek society was polytheistic. Standards such as monotheism in Catholic terms did not exist. There were Gods that ruled over emotions, the land, sea, and even realms outside of human reach, such as Zeus in heaven and...

Biblical Equality For Women

...attentive to how it has hindered unbelievers from coming to salvation through the work of Jesus Christ. Likewise, I agree with the author, the difference between men and women do not justify granting men unique privileges of leadership also authority not shared by women (Pierce and Groothuis 13). In reflecting on this point, I feel women have always be discriminated against even in the biblical aspect. Setting the stage historically, even in the Garden of Eden, it was the woman that was evil. Regardless, she was reaching all mankind as the first woman created also thus original ancestor of all people. Notably, her fall teaches the unbeliever and the believer the ease with which all persons fall into sin. Conversely, Perpetua and Felicitas, her servant were women in the early church known as martyrs of the Christian faith. Nonetheless, I glean just as the men, these women were known for their courage also unfaltering faith in the face of persecution, torture and death. Similarly, women and men denied the faith out right, boldly asserting they had never been a Christian to save their lives. In my opinion, the authors’ strongest point as to martyrdom, Mothers of the Church will have the most value as warriors. Meanwhile, religion was very politicized during the Reformation era and Catholics were persecuted closing many convents. On the other hand, these women were convinced of their call to preach the gospel and their gifts paved the way for them (all women) in various...

...CHRISTIANITY: THE BEGINNING In The Acts of Perpetua and Felicita, three men and two women willingly walk into an arena where wild beasts are ready to kill them. After suffering beastly wounds, the survivors are willingly led out of the arena, and killed by sword. What was their crime? What gave them the courage to remain firm in the face of such peril? The answer to both of these questions would be Christianity. This is just one case out of hundreds and hundreds where people have willingly become martyrs for their beliefs. Two hundred years earlier, a man named Jesus would start the movement, now known as Christianity, which is only growing bigger and bigger with each passing century. Many kings and great rulers have attempted to halt and annihilate the movement, and even today, some many people deny the very existence of Jesus, and God himself. Despite of all these predicaments, millions upon millions of believers stay faithful to the movement. As a person who believes in God, Jesus, and the Christian movement, I have taken it upon myself to learn more about the history of this fascinating story and the man behind it all. In the course of my research, I have discovered many things I knew and many things I didn’t know. As result, I have found a new, deeper appreciation for my beliefs, and a new and deeper respect for Jesus, the martyrs who died after him, and everything they stood for. So, who was Jesus, what is Christianity, and how did this all start? ...

...SHORT HISTORY OF THE ILOILO PROVINCIAL HIGH SCHOOL The Iloilo National High School (INHS) is a provincial high School located in Iloilo City, Philippines. The history of the Iloilo High School dates back to the later part of 1902 when a school called the Iloilo Normal School was established in a two-storey building in front of and across the street of the present Provincial Building (now Casa Plaza) to meet the future need for Filipino teachers. The minimum requirement for admission was the completion of the elementary education in the old Spanish schools.  The first batch of teachers were selected from experienced American teachers. The first principal was Mr. Lutz, who, despite his past sixty years, was a very kind and understanding man.  The initial enrolment was about 250 and was divided into 5 sections. By 1903, the school had a very active literary society called Philomathean and had also a strong baseball team. In 1904, Mr. Covell succeeded Mr. Lutz as principal. To accommodate more students, preparatory classes were organized. For the first time Filipino students were selected as government pensionados to continue their studies in the United States.  Among those selected were Candido Alcazar, Ambrosio Gison, Delfin Jaranilla, Carlos Lopez, Leon Nava, Balbino Palmares, Graciano Rico, Cirilo Torreblanca and Felix Valencia. In 1905, Mr. Maxson succeeded Mr. Covell as principal.  The pensionados then were Geronimo Huising, Isabelo Lagniton, Claro Pendon, and...
