...The Odyssey and Outliers both prove that perseverance is the most important quality to possess in order to achieve a happy and successful life because it helps one accomplish their goals and helps one lead to academic success. Some may argue that perseverance will not lead to happiness due to all of the hardships one has to face to achieve this; however, this is not true because in The Odyssey, Odysseus endures through many hardships in his journey, in order to accomplish his goal. Through hardships and trials, one must stop and realize ¨we are survivors, these good men and I¨(Homer 58), and can continue to fight to accomplish their goals. Odysseus was proud to share that his men and he was willing to fight through anything to reach home....

...“Homer may have lived sometime between 900 and 800 B.C.- if he ever lived at all.” In the epic poem, The Odyssey, written by Homer, it illustrates Odysseus’s treacherous journey as it takes him 10 years to finally arrive home. Along the trip he faces great danger that exposes him to use qualities embedded in the Greek life and its culture. Through perseverance, loyalty, and teamwork, Odysseus is bound to get through his journey. Loyalty is vital in any alliance or tie. According to Odysseus, “I drove them, all three wailing, to the ships, tied them down under their rowing benches, and called them rest..” (9.48-50) As shown above, Odysseus is very devoted to his members and does not allow them to survive off of just a flower. He forcibly...

...Perseverance is Key. It may be difficult for people to get back up after being knocked down, but they persevere and keep trying. Jews who were involved in the Holocaust had to persevere through everything. Losing their family, getting abused, getting starved, being forced to do stuff, and more. People find strength in different ways to persevere and endure a tough time. For example, Hedi was a girl in the Holocaust who had to see things happen she never imagined seeing. The Holocaust was as horrible for women as it was for men. “A Hungarian demanded she take it off and hand it to him. So mother removed the ring, threw it away, and said to him, "Now go look for it." She didn't hand it to him – she was a proud woman” (Solzbach). The women were...

...Persevering Through The Odyssey Many themes are addressed in great literature, and “perseverance” is one that comes up again and again. Perseverance means to continue on through tough or harsh times despite the consequences to achieve success. The Odyssey is a great example of such literature in which this theme shows up multiple times. Written by the renowned poet Homer, The Odyssey tells the journey of Odysseus, King of Ithaca, who has defeated the Trojans and is returning back home ten years later where his family is waiting for him. Odysseus and his crew run into many challenges on the way back to Ithaca such as sea monsters and gods. Perseverance is a prevailing theme in The Odyssey shown throughout the epic especially in Odysseus and his wife Penelope. After being away from home for 20 years, Odysseus sets off to get back to...

...There are many reasons that Homer’s epic, The Odyssey, is still taught to students all around the world, but the most important are the lessons it teaches about using fear as an advantage, determination, and heroic actions. “What if we looked at fear in a fresh way. What if we thought of fear an amazing act of the imagination, something that can be as profound an insightful as storytelling itself” (Torgovnick). Instead of letting fear overwhelm and consume students, fear should be used as motivation. The story behind fear can lead students to their goal, just as Odysseus used his fear in a positively impactful way to lead him and his crew towards home. “Perseverance is also displayed in his way of thinking, his desire to survive and at times...

...Themes, Themes, Themes So what is it with all these themes coming and going throughout the story, or what is the most important theme of The Odyssey? The title of the book is The Odyssey. The book is translated by Robert Fitzgerald. The book itself is bunched up into a book with fifteen sub-stories, books, or chapters; whatever you want to call them. This essay will be about; what is the main theme of this story? The lesson that should be learned with reading this essay is, “Stay true to your dreams, stay true to yourself (Persevere yourself).” The first example shown in the text when it shows symptoms of perseverance is somewhere towards the end. It is when Odysseus finally arrives home after being at least gone for twenty years from a ten year war, and also a ten year journey to getting back home. For instance, in book 23, page 573, lines 97-103, Telemachus states, “Mother, cruel mother, do you feel nothing, drawing yourself apart this way from Father? Will you not sit with him and talk and question him? What other woman could remain so cold? Who shuns her lord, and he come back to her from wars and...

In Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightning Thief directed by Chris Columbus. His quest begins once he is wrongly accused of stealing Zeus’ Lightning Bolt. His mother is then stolen from him by Hades. Percy is determined to save her but while looking for her, he finds his true place and purpose in the world. Both of these stories share “The Hero’s...

...Critical Analysis: The Odyssey | One of the major themes in this epic The Odyssey is loyalty and perseverance. King Odysseus has been away from his land of Ithaca, wife Penelope and son Telemachus for twenty years. Ten of those years were spent with his faithful crew fighting in the Trojan War and the other ten years was spent trying to return home. Penelope didn’t lose faith in her husband after a rowdy and disrespectful crowd of suitors came and uprooted the palace. Penelope has a cunning that indicates she is a good mate for her wily husband. Antinous complains of it at the assembly in Book 2. The queen has a clever tactic as she worked on a weaving for three years, a shroud for the eventual funeral of her father in law in. Clearly buys her times to fool the young suitors. Her tactics eventually fail her after her malicious servants tell the suitors what the queen has been doing. I have to commend Odysseus for his perseverance on trying to get home to Ithaca and to his family. During Books nine thru twelve is where he did most of his wandering at sea thanks to Poseidon. In these books elapsed a little over seven years of his journey. I believe those year was the longest test of Odysseus loyalty and perseverance to return home to Penelope. Odysseus has to have two affairs just to continue his journey to Penelope. While thinking about his family constantly, he still remains very loyal to his men when the goddess- enchantress Circe turns them into animals....

...larger-than-life figure who undertakes great journeys and performs deeds requiring remarkable strength and cunning. In the “Odyssey” by Homer, Odysseus is a man who is traveling home to Ithaca after 10 years until the end of the Trojan War and comes upon many thrilling, dangerous adventures along the way. The heroic traits of Odysseus in “The Odyssey” by Homer can be compared to those of three contemporary heroes. An epic hero shows courage. Odysseus shows courage when risks his own life to visit Tiresias, a blind prophet, in the underworld. Circe, the witch of the land of Aeolus, informs Odysseus that he must visit the underworld and hear “ … a prophecy from the ghost of Tiresias.” Odysseus, familiar with the idea that he might not be able to return back to Earth,...

...Rizal Technological University Boni Campus Boni Avenue, Mandaluyong City COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS BETWEEN ODYSSEY AND BIAG NI LAM ANG Presented by: Noveno, Sherjun C. Palon, John Paolo T. Presented to: Prof. Lynn M. Besa February 17, 2015 INTRODUCTION Skepticism is as much the result of knowledge, as knowledge is of skepticism. To be content with what we at present know is, for the most part, to shut our ears against conviction; since from the very gradual character of our education, we must continually forget and emancipate ourselves from, knowledge previously acquired; we must set aside old notions and embrace fresh ones; and as we learn, we must be daily unlearning something which it has cost us no small labor and anxiety to acquire. Skepticism has attained its culminating point with respect to Homer, and the state of our Homeric knowledge may be described as a free permission to believe any theory, provided we throw overboard all written tradition, concerning the author of the Iliad and Odyssey. Lots of arguments have appeared to run in a circle. “This cannot be true because it is not true; and that is not true, because it cannot be true.” Such seems to be the style, in which testimony upon testimony, statement upon statement, is consigned to denial and oblivion. Odyssey is one of the two major ancient Greek epic poems attributed to Homer. It is, in part, a sequel to the Iliad. The poem is fundamental to the modern Western canon and is the second oldest...

...Moat men who have been away from family – want to return to them. When a person travels long distances they happen to come upon obstacles. Pride is the most important thing that keeps men going. In the book “The Odyssey” and the film “O Brother Where Art Thou?”, we can compare three basic subjects: characters, events, and the journey. Even though the characters in the book and film have some things in common; they are very different. In “The Odyssey” by Homer, Odysseus lied to his men for the sake of keeping them safe. While in “O Brother Where Art Thou?” Directed by Joel and Ethan Coen, Everett lied to Pete and Delmar so he could stop his wife from remarrying. Hence forth, Odysseus gives more of an honorable standing in the sense of loyalty to friends and family equally. While Everett seems more focused on his family. As the plots of the compared unfold, there are events that are alike. Odysseus dressed as an elderly beggar man to fool the suitors – so he could see his wife. Everett on the other hand, dresses as an elderly hobo – who is a part of a singing group to fool Homer and the suitor; so he could see his wife. Both of the men used elderly disguises to fool people in...

...The Odyssey v. The Hobbit In the stories "The Odyssey" by Homer and "The Hobbit" by J.R.R. Tolkien, there are many similarities. The main characters, Odysseus and Bilbo, are trying to get themselves and their crews home. Bilbo and Odysseus have many things in common such as their cunning abilities in trickerySome of the similarities between the two are the settings, the challenges, the enemies, and coming home. First, the setting comparison. One place that can be compared in both stories is 'The Land of the Dead' in "The Odyssey" to 'MirkWood', which is a forest, in "The Hobbit". Both places have masking around them so that it is difficult to see, for example, the fog in 'The Land of the Dead' and the thick trees in 'MirkWood'. Both are also filled with dead people, though none are actually seen in "The Hobbit", but are frequently talked about....

...Odysseus is the main character of the Odyssey. Throughout all of the Odyssey, Odysseus figures himself out. The mastermind goes through many conflicts both inner and outer. He is described as a leader of his crew of men. Odysseus is not the epic hero he is supposed to be. Odysseus depends on his crew. If he was alone on Kyklopes’ island he would have probably died at first. This is because the Kyklopes picked up one of his crew members and devoured him instantly. Odysseus is always deemed as the hero, the leader, and the mastermind. But, the mastermind of war could not have gone so far without men helping him paddle his boat. An example is in the citation above, “I chopped out a six foot section of this poe and set it down before my men….”...

...Hero versus Hero A hero is like a the one and only happy fish in a bright blue ocean sea full of vicious sharks. A hero is someone who is admiring or is inspiring to a person. A hero is a person who is full of courage, kindness, and might. Odysseus from The Odyssey by Homer has many heroic qualities same goes to Dorothy from The Wizard of Oz. While Odysseus has earned his place in being a hero, it is clear that Dorothy tops off the list with heart full of courage. It is true that Odysseus is a hero because he is courageous, determined, and mighty, however he performs those things in a stingy way. To begin, Odysseus is courageous. According to the text, “There was a loud hiss as the burning wood pierced the watery membrane” (Homer 27). While some people believe Odysseus is courageous because he stabs the cyclops in the eye,...

...Comparison of The Odyssey and The Iliad I feel like I can really relate to Achilles and Odysseus in both of the tales. I feel like Odysseus that I am a good leader cares for others, intelligent and cunning. I might not be as strong as him, but that is not my point.. For Achilles he is considered to have one weakness in his body the rest is perfect and untouchable. The term Achilles heel is used because his weakness was his heel. I never quite understood why his mother didn’t just turn him on the heel after or dab some on to cover his heel. I feel like him because and relate to the fact that he has very few weaknesses. I don’t feel that I have many as well. I thought the relationship between Hector and Achilles was pretty. Obviously they did not like each other at all. That is a dead give away while reading. They both fought on separate sides during the Trojan War. I thought it was very rude of Achilles to continually drag Hector’s body around as if he was nothing and not a human. To me it felt like a kid dragging around a toy across the floor. Not a very pleasing sight. I found it interesting how the Gods protected his body either because they thought it was rude of Achilles or because they liked Hector. The fact that they do this seems interesting and very important. The Gods have a great powers so don’t they just smite Achilles for this crude act. Within this there is discussion between the Gods of what they should do about the body. Apollo believes the bod should be...
