In the novel Under the Persimmon Tree, by Suzanne Fisher Staples, Najmah and Nusrat go through major changes. The Taliban is forcing Afghans to join their group and they are killing or helping other terrorist groups to kill innocent people. This puts a lot of responsibility on Najmah to take care of herself and their family, and this puts pressure on Nusrat as well because she doesn't know if her husband is alive or dead. "It was started by a leader named Mullah Mohammed Omar"(Lynch). The Taliban is a Sunni Islamic fundamentalist group originating from Afghanistan and started in 1994 (Tanna). They ruled Afghanistan for about 5 years after that (Tanna). The word Taliban means "religious students" (Nguyen). They strongly believe in the religion of Islam and additionally, they beat up the people who do not believe in the religion of Islam the exact same way they do (Nguyen). The Taliban uses violence to prove their point. The people in the Taliban believe that they are pleasing and impressing their God by treating their people harshly (Nguyen). Many of their laws are unrealistic and unreasonable. For example, "they don't let women get an education or live life they way men can" (Bortle). They don't let people enjoy life like the way we do here in America. For entertainment, the only thing that people can do is walk in the gardens and smell flowers" (Lynch). Playing music, laughing out loud, putting up art, hearing birds sing, reading, or flying kites are prohibited (Lynch). Watching television and using the internet is also banned (Coskie). Here in America, we depend on the internet for almost everything we do. They enforce ridiculous and illogical rules such as men can only grow their beard up to a certain length, and women can only leave the house if their are accommodated with men (Coskie).
