Personal Growth Through Communication

Communication is a blend of verbal and nonverbal sharing with others. Boggs and Arnold (2011) state, “The majority of person-to-person communication is nonverbal”. The way we use our posture speaks volumes about our thoughts. Through communication, we are can advance our professional careers. As a group, we are providing examples of how we have used communication for advancement. Each of our four group members shared how they believe communication has helped them personally and professionally. Most of us have used electronic charting and believe it has helped us in the written form of communication to interact with increased professional wording and conversation. With grammar and spell check links available, our words are aligned with correct grammar and spelling. Another example of using writing as a tool for communication is writing business case documents to procure additional staffing or needed office equipment, by writing requests to send to the strategic planning board. The nurse had an opportunity to see healthcare from the business perspective. Two members of our group have participated in motivational interviewing with clients. This type of communication led them to a better understanding of the client and built trusting, therapeutic relationships. The patient can be the leader in their health care which improves outcomes. By using motivational interviewing these nurses have professionally advanced their nurse/client relationships. Nonverbal communication is a large aspect of nursing. As nurses, we must be aware of what our body stance is saying to the client. Using a sitting position at eye level with the client and leaning forward shows interest in what they are revealing to you. A touch of the hand relays empathy when needed.
