Interview
Your goal is to get them talking. Listen for what is said, what is implied, what is not said. Try not to insert your opinions and experience.
Start the interview by explaining who you are and why you are interviewing them. Thank them sincerely for giving you their time and thoughts. Be sensitive throughout the interview to whether the person wants to continue.
Sample Interview Questions
Start with questions that are easy and comfortable to answer: 1. What kind of work do you do? Office manager in a professional medical setting 2. How long have you been doing it? 18 years 3. Can you describe a typical work day? Schedule surgery, verify insurance for new patients and oversight of the daily workings of the office.
Then move to questions that require more thought and rapport with the interviewer: 1. Why did you end up doing this work? What kind of person often does this sort of work? (And would they consider themselves typical?) my son had an injury and I met the doctor, when I assisted with a translation the doctor offered me a position and I have been there ever since. 2. What do you like about this work? I love meeting new people, I work with the doctors, but mostly it is the people I like working with. 3. What is difficult about this work? The staff, I have issues with the staff in general. Not enough time to do all the jobs I am asked to do in a day. I am also forced to cover other jobs and still be responsible for my own position. 4. How do (customers, others in the company...) treat you? What do they think about the job you do? [Adapt this question to fit your particular interview--try to get at how they think they are treated based on their work.] The front office staff, has some respect for me, one of the workers knows to ask me as I have been doing this for years, the other worker avoids me but we tend to have confrontations when we do meet because she does not want to follow the set office protocol. The doctors respect my experience and professionalism. I wish I could have combined the job I do now with the job I used to do, it would have prevented so many issues I have now, but I still have a lot to do in the back office so I guess this way works out. 5. How does being a (fill in the blank with a salient cultural category: man, older person, African-American, 20-something, etc.) play into the work you do? Being bilingual is a major factor in my job, being an older woman allows me the respect of years worth of experience and the point of view being a woman offers to the medical field 6. Has this work changed the way you think about yourself, about the world? Yes…I have gained awareness about medical issues, and perspective about the field compared to what I believed before. I also see a huge diversity dealing with all the people who come in and medical reps that come through. I also learned a lot about myself as I watched patients have procedures done right in the office. I have also learned to deal with and strengthen my stomach against. 7. What are some cultural values that are important to you (can be family, work, or interpersonal)? Do you think these are similar to or different from mainstream American culture? Please explain your ideas. Family comes first, respect for your elders, and the work place as well as home respect should always come first. I think a lot of people feel the same, but the younger generation is lacking in many of the values I hold dear. I wish I could help but educating the world is not my responsibility. 8. What do you like best about American culture? What do you like least? (Even if the person is American, they will have an opinion about this question that gives you some insight about how they view things from their perspective.) I have great respect for the emphasis America places on its military members.I do not like the police, I have never liked how the police in American culture are placed in a position to abuse their power. I have never had a good experience with the police. 9. How does your religion affect your daily life? Yes I have seen many different religions that affect medical treatments in different ways.
Thank them again.
Analysis
Think about your interview, the person, and their work. Please consider these questions as you write your journal assignment: 1. What aspects of this person's work determine or indicate their status relative to others? 2. What are some of the connections between this person's work experience and gender, race, age, and /or ethnicity (etc.)? 3. What kinds of attitudes, values, and behaviors does this person's work culture encourage? 4. What attitudes and values, held by this person, were similar to your own, and which were different? 5. From this interview, what can give us insight into communicating across cultures or across work cultures.

...Personal Interview Paper Kimberly Willard BSHS/355 January 19th, 2015 Karen Miner Personal Interview Paper This is a personal interview that I conducted with a woman whom is a case manager for a non-profit organization, called Health Right 360. Carla Johnson works exclusively with women on probation that have been mandated to participate in the (AB) 109 Bill. Miss Johnson shared with me what a day consists of working with these women The interview started with Carla sharing information regarding this program, how it came to exist and its impact upon these women. Carla explained to me that “In 2011, Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr. signed Assembly Bill (AB) 109 and AB 117, historic legislation that has helped California to close the revolving door of low-level inmates cycling in and out of state prisons” (n.d.). This means “Assembly Bill 109 establishes the California Public Safety Realignment Act of 2011 which allows for current non-violent, non-serious, and non-sex offenders, who after they are released from California State prison, are to be supervised at the local County level. Instead of reporting to state parole officers, these offenders are to report to local county probation officers” (n.d.). This means more opportunities for those that have been incarcerated for low level crimes. After speaking with Miss Johnson, she shared that the main focus of her job is recruitment, referrals and advocacy. Networking and collaborating with potential resource agencies...

...The Perfect Interview Ray Hall Xcom/125 August, 15 2010 Deanna Kimbrel Communication in an interview is very important and knowing what to say and knowing how to say it is the only way I believe that you can be a potential higher for a company. The information that I have shared with you in my presentation is purely informative, I show you how you can be a great interviewee and get the job done when you’re being interviewed. I chose this way to show my college students how to prepare for an interview because I didn’t believe that making persuasive presentation will reach college students. I have learned over the years that telling a college student what to do usually doesn’t work, but if you show them what they have to do to be successful than that always works. Using an informative presentation shows the college students steps in being a great interviewee and it also gets them prepared of what to expect in an interview. I believe that informative ways of showing how to interview better prepares someone for the future. It also prepares for what to expect in an interview. When most companies usually has someone doing interviews one on one, some might see how you react in a different setting. Most companies now days have you come in two or three times before they hire you so you always have to prepare for that also. They might put you through a scenario that will get you involved with other people from the company just to see how well you work with others. They...

Personal Narrative: An Interview With Coach Jeff O Gara

...When I was deciding whom I wanted to interview, I had a tough time finding the right coach because I never had a coach truly understood myself as an athlete. I’ve had good coaches over the years don’t get me wrong, but finding the coach I admired the most was hard. The one I admired the most I only had for a year, and I knew it would be too hard to try and interview him, since he is so busy. So I interviewed the person who I thought would be a very interesting person to get to know more about is coach Jeff O’Gara. Coach OG (as call him OG) is that person you look at and you’re like oh wow, he’s a legit badass. He’d be able to beat up everyone. I honestly just presumed that’s the type of person he was, along with a straightforward attitude and if you don’t like it too bad it’s the truth grow up. While this interview does confirm what I assumed, I was also surprised along the way. As I started the interview, I could tell right away he hated every second of the interview, as he isn’t the type of person that likes talking about himself. However, he is the type of guy to still do it because he truly cares about his...

Personal Narrative: My Interview With Bobby

...Approaching new people at school can sometimes be a difficult thing. Before I had the chance to interview Bobby I had only noticed him around school every now and then, and I never seemed to have a good opportunity to actually approach him and have a conversation. Interviewing Bobby told me minor things such as when his birthday is, to other more important things, like what he wants his career to be when he gets older and what he seems himself succeeding his graduation from high school. I was able to learn all about Bobby’s family, school activities, and his skills and hobbies. The first thing I got to talk to Bobby about was his family life. Bobby told me he was born in Greensburg, has lived here his entire life, and will most likely continue to live here as he gets older. Yet he did say that if he could live anywhere in the world he would like to live in Hawaii because he has always wanted to go to a tropical place. Next, Bobby has 3 older siblings. There is Shauna who is 19, Joe who is 22, and Michael who is 30. Bobby said that he enjoys being the youngest of the family because he likes that he gets more attention. Personal Narrative: An Interview With A Volleyball Player

...On November 14th, 2015. I conducted an interview with my volleyball teammate, Kelsey Olion. To no one’s surprise we did the interview on a bus traveling to an away volleyball game. We waited until everyone had put their headphones in and laid back in their seat before we started. This created a quiet environment. The only noises were the sound of our voices and the humming of the bus. Because of my relationship with Kelsey, our interview ran very smoothly with no awkward or uncomfortable situations. Kelsey Olion is currently a junior at MWSU. Towards the end of her sophomore volleyball season, Kelsey tore her anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) while playing in an away volleyball match. She went up to swing on a tight set and her right leg landed on top of the blocker’s foot, immediately bringing Kelsey down. I asked Kelsey what was going through her head at that moment and she said, “I was in shock. My knee had completely dislocated and I didn’t really know what to think. I didn’t cry, but I was panicking and hyperventilating.” Initially Kelsey didn’t think she had torn her ACL and neither did the trainers at MWSU, but after further examination at a doctor’s...

...for babies, infants, and even adults. I selected Mrs. Mendez for my informational interview because I believe that it is important to have more women in the business industry, and because when I am older I want to be able to have my own business as well. From this interview, I learned that with knowing that business is the path you want to take for your future. You have to be able to learn how to work in small and big business before you jump into creating a business of your own. You have to be able to learn how to work in different sized business because the environment for both is very different. With this, I also learned that with wanting a successful company or business you want to be able to have a successful advertisement, and you want to give the world a good or service that they actually want. Without successful advertisement and a good or service that people want, your business might not go anywhere in the future. When completing the interview, something that Mrs. Mendez said that keeps sticking to me is that no matter if you want to start a business or already have one you will always need luck,...

Long Report

...Cody Westwood 6/17/2015 Amanda Miller English 101 A Lot of Chili and an Interview. Throughout life one will most definitely find themselves nervously googling how to prepare for a job interview. Or find themselves as the host of a super bowl party with no idea what food to make to or how to make it for a large party of people. That is why the authors of “How to Interview” and “…Chili for Fifty” wrote their essays, to help others. At a first glance someone wouldn’t think that the essays have anything in common. Once one takes a deeper look into them it can be found that both essays can be useful to a young adult audience and offer helpful steps to completing separate tasks in everyday life. This is all done by using different writing techniques. Although both have a similar purpose the way each task is explained is different. For example, in”…Chili for Fifty” Eric Michalski says “… you could boil a cow’s head in. (Don’t ask how I know.)”(Michalski 359), “I hate Jalapenos” (Michalski 361), and “If you plan on moving the chili pot, which you shouldn’t, potholders are useful.” (Michalski 359). These examples show that Michalski uses a more informal tone, almost as if the reader is having a conversation with the author about how to make the chili. This makes the essay more enjoyable to read with his personal touch. In the article from Monster.com on interviewing the text is laid out in a more formal manner. The author uses bolded headings such as “Be Prepared to talk about...
