Personal Model of Helping This paper will discuss my personal model of helping that I have developed so far in my educational career so far. This paper will cover how and why I have formed this viewpoint, my view of helping, the relationship between the client and participant, techniques or approaches to change, the kinds of problems that can be addressed with my model, and multicultural issues. The limitations and strengths of the model and there populations this model can help will also be addressed in this paper. The personal model of helping that I have developed involves various theories. My model of helping involves the Adlerian theory, existential theory, person-centered theory, gestalt theory, reality therapy, cognitive behavior theory, Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, and rational-emotive theory.
Adlerian theory includes the importance of birth order, takes into consideration the individual’s life style, their social interest, and their personality as it pertains to inferiority and superiority. The goal of the Adlerian theory is to increase social interest, change negative behaviors that are self-destructive, and help increase problem solving skills. In therapy sessions the family dynamics are observed. Often times the family unit assigns the roles the individual plays within the family based on birth order. The eldest child may have most of the responsibility placed on them because they are the eldest and are expected to take a leadership role. In the sessions the client’s present lifestyle is examined and their early childhood experiences are discussed and examined. The here and now is discussed and the counselor provides the client with encouragement. The counselor provides the client with ways to overcome the feelings of being inferior and low self –concept (Cohen, 2011).
The Adlerian theory would be most effectively used when there are in person counseling sessions. Sessions will mostly consist of one-on-one counseling but there can be a couple of family sessions to observe the family dynamics. The Adlerian theory emphasizes the importance of in- person sessions because non-verbal communication is very important when trying to effectively help a client. This theory can be used with clients that are addicted to drugs and alcohol. Clients that are seeking to improve their marital skills and parenting may also benefit from Adlerian therapy. The client may be assigned homework assignments, contracts may be set up, and suggestions given to the client (Parrott, 2003).
The second theory that I want to incorporate is the existential theory. This theory puts the client in control of finding and pursuing the meaning of life. The counselor helps the client examine their views and how it fits into the worldwide meaning of life and purpose. Self-awareness and their ability to choose an action or make a decision is active and not passive. Individuals begin to realize that their lives and the direction it will go is in their own hands and only they have to power to change their lives. Once they realize that their future is in their own hands the way they view their life and the events around them will change (Parrott, 2003).
A client that grew up in a single-parent household and they blame their problems, such as making poor decisions when choosing the men they choose to be with, because their father was not around would benefit from using existential therapy because they can learn that their past does not have to determine their future. The client can look at the positive aspects of growing up in a single-parent household. She is able to see how strong her mother is and because she realizes the reasons she makes poor choices in men she can work on those aspects and maybe work on her relationship with her father.
Person- centered theory again places the responsibility for change in the client’s hands. This theory emphasizes that the client is the only person that can change and help them. The counselor is there to help guide them but the ultimate responsibility is placed in the client’s hands. The counselor and client’s relationship involves positive regard and empathy. The client and counselor relationship is a bit passive because the client finds their own self-worth and their own path. Genuineness, positive regard, and empathy is important in this theory (Parrott, 2003).
This approach gives the client a sense of empowerment because they are put in control of their decisions and the counselor is not focusing on the past and the negative, the emphasis is placed on the present and the positive areas of the individual’s life (Cohen, 2011).
Gestalt therapy helps the clients embrace self-responsibility, relying less on others, and incorporating one’s own parts into forming their own self-whole. This theory put the responsibility on the individual and holds the individual accountable for their own actions and feelings. The individual can work on issues they have had in the past that is unresolved. Clients are at times stuck in the past and helping them resolve their open issues will help the close the open chapter in their lives and be able to successfully move on. This therapy can involve the client confronting the problem, analyzing the client’s dreams, and role plays (Cohen, 2011).
Reality therapy also emphasizes the person taking personal responsibility for themselves. The client cannot control or change the past they can only change the present. The goal is to help the client relate better to others. I believe interpersonal relationships are important and many individuals do not know how important how they relate to others affects their happiness and their feeling of fulfillment in life. What motivates people to look and find lasting relationships are survival, love and belonging, power or achievement (Cohen, 2011). I believe cognitive-behavior therapy is also important. Being able to change the way an individual processes and views the event is important because if the individual is able to look at an event in a positive manner instead of negative more individuals will not be so depressed and sad. Cognitive behavior therapy can be used with an individual that is suffering from depression or anxiety. Individuals that suffer from depression look at the negative aspects of a situation and if the therapist can work with the client and help them look at the positive aspects of the situation the person may not feel as depressed. Cognitive behavior therapy is also important part of my personal model of helping because I have personally used this theory in my life. I have been diagnosed with major depression and after years of depending on medications I took the time to examine when I feel more depressed versus other times. I find that I feel more depressed when events in my life happened and I viewed them in a negative manner. I have worked on looking at the events in a more positive manner and I have been able to reduce the amount of medications I take from 15 pills to one pill, mainly used for sleep. Maslow’s hierarchy of needs is important when counseling individuals because basic needs must be met first in order to move to the next level on the pyramid. The need for food, water, and warmth must first be met. Once that is met the individual’s safety must be met. Once the client is safe the client’s psychological needs can be met. The need for love and belonging is an important part of achieving their self-esteem needs. The final step is self-actualization which refers to a state of full-expression (Parrott, 2003). Working with victims of domestic violence I have realized the importance of Maslow’s hierarchy of needs. As a case manager at the shelter I encountered many clients and their primary concern was how their basic needs were going to get met because they left the place where their primary needs were met. The client met with a case manager and counselor within the first three days so they can work on their primary needs and as the sessions progressed they worked on the rest of the hierarchy of needs. Rational emotive theory can help the client eliminate habits that do not promote positive behaviors. This theory is also important because many clients make decisions based on emotions and do not make their decisions based on logic. This theory encourages clients to think about decisions and make decisions based on logical reasons (Cohen, 2011). An approach I would like to change is the all or nothing views that I have as it pertains to me. In order to effectively help a client I would need to work on how I view what I consider failure. I know from working in the field that we will not be able to help everyone and since I still have the all or nothing views I will be prone to early burn-out. I need to work on Maslow’s hierarchy of needs. As I continue through this class and previous classes I have worked on the self-actualization part of the pyramid. I realize that I have a lot of work to do on personal issues that I have put aside because I did not think that it would come back up or be an important part. I have learned from these classes that in order to effectively help a client I cannot let my personal problems effect my sessions with a client. My model of helping may need to be changed or adjusted based on the client’s cultural background or based on their beliefs. Adjustments may also need to be made based on the client’s problem or the areas that they feel needs to be worked on. It is important as a counselor to take into consideration the individual’s cultural background. The counselor needs to be culturally sensitive and be careful to not make assumptions about the individual based on their ethnicity or cultural beliefs and backgrounds (Parrott, 2003). I personally feel very passionate about being culturally aware because when I sought out counseling I changed numerous counselors because I felt many of them were not culturally aware and if they were not aware they did not ask. I had a counselor assumed that I was African-American. My parents are South Asian from the West Indies so I have mixture of cultural backgrounds and I was born and raised in America so it was very important for the counselor to not make assumptions about my ethnicity and my beliefs. This model of helping can address the problems of numerous groups of people because it empowers the client and puts the decision making and changing in their hands. The therapist is there to guide the client but the choices are up to them. Some of the specific populations this model can help are victims of domestic violence, individuals that are addicted to drugs and alcohol, individuals that suffer from depression or anxiety problems, troubled adolescents, individuals with anger problems, and individuals suffering from low self-esteem. My model of helping may not be conducive as far as helping children because children need more guidance and hands on helping. Art therapy may help a client that is younger. My model may not help clients that do not voluntarily want counseling because my model puts the power in the client’s hands and the counseling is primarily guided by the client and the therapist is there for support. My model may not be helpful when conducting couple’s therapy. This model also may not help individuals that were molested or raped as children because it focuses on the present and victims of child abuse tend to have problems stemming from the abuse they suffered as children, and that would need to be addressed in the counseling sessions in order to help the client heal from the abuse. This model’s strength is the focus that it puts on the client’s current situation and their future instead of focusing on the past. This model puts the client in control of their future thus empowering them to control their own future. This empowerment will help build the client’s self-esteem and will result in longer term change because the client was put in the position of power to change their own future. This model does not examine the individual’s past which may be necessary for them to change their future. An individual who is an alcoholic that is seeking help turned to alcohol for a reason. It may be necessary to examine their past to see why they turned to alcohol. Once the reasons have been established then my personal model of helping will be able to be utilized to help the client stop their addiction to alcohol. My personal model of helping includes the Adlerian theory, the existential theory, the person-centered theory, gestalt theory, reality theory, cognitive-behavior theory, rational-emotive theory and Maslow’s hierarchy of needs. This is the personal model that I have developed thus far in my education. As I continue with my education and as I practice in the field I will find it necessary to adjust or change my personal model according to the client I am helping based on their presenting problem or their cultural background. This paper discussed my personal model of helping as it is today, the multicultural issues, who my model can help, and problems that may affect my model of helping. The most important part of any model, including mine, is the client’s needs.

...My Personal Model of Helping Hattie B Pierce (Healy) BSHS/312 March 12, 2012 Dr. Princess Clarke, Instructor As we think about helping those who may need help we need to realize that there are many ideas on helping the people who need help. It is suggested that a counselor’s knowledge, theory and ability are only as good as the counselor’s personal qualities (Jevne, 1082). What this means is that therapeutic techniques will help people who are looking for counseling when the counselor’s personality is genuinely helpful (Truax & Mitchell, 1971). In this paper I will try to explain my own personal model of helping. I will use my real life experiences, suggest some useable applications, and cover some of the problems my model may cover. I will also try to address and overcome multicultural issues. Hopefully I will be able to address any limitations as well as the strengths my model may have. I will also identify some types of people my model will be able to help. Not until lately did I even dream my interest in helping others would make me want to be a counselor. I want to help people the way I was helped when I went into rehab for drug addiction. The counselors there were some of the most understanding people I had ever met and they did not judge me. They made sure I realized they were there to help me. I am also a 5 year chip toter of NA (Narcotics Anonymous). ...Personal Model of Helping BSH/312-Models of Effective Helping January 24, 2011 Louis Kavar Personal Model of Helping My personal model of helping is based on my own experience with change.  It is a combination of person-centered and behavioral theories that combine together to create the framework that will help me help others. I formed this viewpoint from several different areas. The first is from the different selections in our textbook. While reading the text selections I identified most with Carl Rogers' theories of therapy. Rogers' approach to let the client feel responsible for their treatment allows the client to take responsibility for the changes that they make. Person-centered therapy does not look to the past, as more Freudian therapies do. Person-centered therapy focuses on the present and asks the client to take ownership of their own wellbeing. In combination with person-centered therapy I believe that focusing on the present with a client is very important and letting the client discover their own willingness for change. Once the client decides that they have the desire to change, they then need the skills to make those changes in their life, which is where behavioral theories are implemented. Giving the client the skills to personally implement the changes is very powerful. It gives them ownership of their treatment and teaches them how to continue their recovery even after they have ended therapy. It is akin to the Chinese proverb of, "if...

...Personal Model of Helping Randi DeSmit BSHS312 April 22, 2011 Dr. Princess Clarke Strengths and Limitations in Theories My personal model of helping includes basic ideas from Adlerian, existential, and person-centered theories and includes emphasis from behaviorism, gestalt, rational - emotive, and reality theories. I have formed my viewpoint from the vast frame up of techniques also methods I have chosen since one impression or single chosen emphasis does not number all aspects I believe to be addressed in order to be a sufficient helper. I will explain why I formed my viewpoint from each of the theories I have selected, identify strengths further limitations, and again discuss multicultural issues. The first theory I am going to cover in my diagram of helping is the Adlerian theory. I am not to say that I would put an emphasis on social interests but feel that having an understanding of others outside oneself is a weighty angle of developing wisdom about interconnectedness within one's environment. I also believe family order needs to be considered, because at times, roles are assigned also “reinforced by societal norms “(Cicirelli, 1994). Family constellation needs to personify considered, seeing the conditions within a family unit can affect behavior development and personality (Merriam - Webster, Incorporated, 2010). Forgiving a client’s former influences often helps notice details that are not completely apparent during treatment. In that example...

...Personal Model of Helping University of Phoenix BSHS/ 312 Models of Effective Helping Personal Model of Helping All theories have different views on ways of helping and different goals to imply. By using the person-centered approach ones view of human nature comes from one’s helping style. One would require a style that would make the client believe he or she is safe and understood. By the client knowing his or her therapist or counselor does understand him or her then he or she will believe he or she is safe and accept the help offer by the therapist or counselor. One could possibly set his or her on goals for change or except those of the therapist or counselor. “Person-centered therapy holds an optimistic view of human personality and focuses on present rather than past experience. Focusing on the inner experience of persons rather than on observable behavior, it holds that behavioral change evolves from within the person rather than through the manipulation of the environment” (Parrott III, 2003). View on Helping Developing a personal theory for the way one would want to understand human nature and provide him or her with the help he or she needs takes careful consideration. From what I have learned from this model of effective helping course is that the human service profession is a complex and overwhelming process, and one has to understand the methods one uses. ...Personal Model of Helping Janet Bragg BSHS/312 November 26, 2012 Michael Hoffman Personal Model of Helping There are many models of helping for the Human Service Workers to choose from. Although there are many models to choose from, prior to taking this class, I was not sure about what model of helping that I favored. I was not sure of what model I preferred to use, because it was difficult for me to choose one technique, for I believed there was not just one technique that would solve every problem. For example, the theory that may work for one client with a certain situation may not help a different client with a similar situation. This made it difficult for me to choose, because I wanted to be able to use the model of helping that would be the best one for the client. While I was taking this course, I noticed that I already use Behavior Therapy on a daily basis. I prefer to use the Behavior Therapy. Behavior Therapy is changing the client’s undesired behavior with a more desirable behavior. According to Herkov (n.d.), “Behavior therapy is focused on helping an individual understand how changing their behavior can lead to changes in how they are feeling.” (para. 1). Indeed, I prefer to use the Behavior Therapy Model, because I have been already using some of major methods and techniques within the Behavior Therapy model. These major techniques, that I have been using prior to taking this course, include: positive reinforcement, token economies, and modeling...

...PERSONAL MODEL OF HELPING Karen Carr January 10, 2010 BSHS312 – Effective Models of Helping Dr. Princess Clarke \ How and why you formed this viewpoint In growing up I always wanted to help other people. I was the child who other children confided in or came to when they wanted to talk or needed help with a problem. When growing up it was not common for black people to go to counseling. Families kept secrets among themselves and sometimes those secrets came back to haunt people many years later. When faced with problems people relied on their spiritual beliefs, the support of the family, and sometimes close friends. If a girl had gotten pregnant and not married that would have been kept top secret. Usually a family member would raise the baby and no one would ever speak openly about it. My family had to deal with the death of two of my brothers at young ages. It hurt my mother deeply having to deal with the loss of two children because of violence. These tragedies were never discussed even as we became adults. As I became older I realized that my mother and our entire family should have gotten counseling. It was not until after my mother passed that my uncle shared with me the pain and agony that she had suffered but his emotional pain as well. Your view of helping As an adult I see the damage that family secrets and not having the capability to openly discuss problems, or seek professional help when needed can cause. Personal Model of Helping

...Paper on Personal Model of Helping The following paper discusses the personal model of helping called the existential therapy model. The model of therapy is used to help people in counseling live better, stress free lives by exploring themselves and learning to live an authentic life. This model is effective when the therapist is authentic themselves and are genuine about helping others, which builds a positive relationship between the therapist and the client. This kind of model allows the client to open up and gives them the ability to explore themselves; past, present, and future. Existential therapy allows the client to understand that their lives are a direct response from the choices that they make in their lives. The therapist also gives the client tools to help change the new found negative behaviors. And although change is sometimes hard to adapt to, with the proper tools from the therapist and motivation from the client, the correct path to an authentic live can began and goals achieved. Existential therapy recognizes the problems of the human condition and existence while at the same time emphasizing human beings' great potential and freedom to respond constructively to these challenges. It helps individuals who choose depression as a response to existential difficulties to break this negative pattern ("Ehow.com", 2013). Existential Model of Helping From my viewpoint, I feel that the existential approach to counseling model of helping is very effective. I have formed...

...Personal Model of Helping Emily Boccia BSHS/312 September 3, 2012 Instructor: Elizabeth Jorgensen I have high hopes for my career in helping others. My hope is to help many people and to be an effective helper. My personal model of helping includes ideas from Adlerian, existential, and person-centered theories and includes techniques from behaviorism and gestalt theories. I have formed my viewpoint from the wide array of techniques and methods I have chosen since one theory or technique does not cover everything I believe need to be addressed in order to be an effective counselor. I also chose different methods and techniques because no two people are the same so a good counselor, to be effective, needs to have many ideas to work with. In the following paper I will explain why I formed my viewpoint from each of the theories I have chosen and identify strengths and limitations. The first theory I have included in my personal model of helping is the Adlerian theory. I have chosen this theory, not because I feel that having a sense of others outside of oneself is an important part of developing a connection with community and the environment. I also believe that birth order needs to be considered, because at times, roles are assigned and often reinforced by society. Family constellation is another interesting theory that needs to be considered because the conditions within a family unit can affect behavior, development, and personality. ...Personal Model of Helping Victoria BSHS 311 August 27, 2012 Tiffany Brewer Personal Model of Helping After researching the many models of effective helping, I feel that Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is one that I would personally use to help my clients. I strongly believe that in order to change your behavior you most first change your way of thinking. The theory behind Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is that, what we think can and will control our behavior. I will also use observational learning, which is known as modeling to strengthen or weaken previously learned behaviors. I would combine the CBT and observational learning to make a model of therapy that the client can practice for the rest of their lives. The model would help identify negative thoughts and beliefs, help control emotions, and change negative thinking into positive thinking, which ultimately lead to positive behaviors, that would then be encouraged and strengthen. How and why this view was formed “You cannot hope to build a better world without improving the individuals. To that end each of us must work for his own improvement and at the same time share a general responsibility for all humanity, our particular duty to aid those to whom we think we can be most helpful” (Woodside & McClam, 2006). This quote stood out as I contemplated on which model would be the most effective for me to counsel. I feel that situations arise in people lives that trigger negative thinking and negative behaviors...

...Personal Model of Helping Existential Therapy Model BSHS/312 Therapy is a tool that is used everyday. It helps individuals and families sort through problems that one may be going through. A clinician can use several therapeutic models as a tool. There is the person-centered theory, which increases congruence between self and experience by reducing conditions of self worth. The Psychoanalytic model makes the unconscious conscious through free association. The Behavioral model positively reinforce desired behaviors and negatively reinforce undesired behaviors and to use modeling for behavior change. Gestalt enhances awareness by focusing on polarities and boundary disturbances, and by being in the here and now. The Adlerian model helps the client overcome feelings of inferiority in a socially useful way so that the client has a sense of belonging. The Reality model helps the client discover new ways to get our needs met so that we are able to get along with important people in our lives. The model I choose as my personal model of helping tool is the existential model. The Existential therapy goal is to help create a clients meaning of life by making them realize that they have the freedom of choice and the responsibility for his or her life. This theory looks at independent choice, personal responsibility, self-determination, and freedoms. We as humans have control in our lives and must take responsibility for our actions. This theory creates the question; who...

In my opinion this was the most important factor regarding my success with a patient/client. I have chosen to put into practice the study of CBT, Motivational Interviewing along with other models of helping which include: the study of creative theory, and the study of multicultural issues. Choosing CBT was an easy task for me for I believe in both the behavioral and cognitive approach/technique, and when combined this form of therapy is successful. Working from an MI perspective will allow me as a future professional to have the knowledge it takes to determine my client(s) ability to change, I will know from using this approach whether or not my clients are ready, willing or able to change, using this approach will permit me to effectively help my clients move gradually towards change, not pushing them but meeting them where they are and helping them to help themselves to where they want to be. Creative Therapy, is a technique used to help individuals or families express what they cannot verbally, these techniques are remarkable in promoting change as well as placing emphasis on having and finding a deeper meaning of self. ...My Personal Theory “Many people report that helping others feels good, often claiming that they get more out of the experience than those with whom they help. However, what you might not know is that there is research that has demonstrated that doing the right thing for others helps us to do the right thing for ourselves”. (Becker-Phelps, 2011) As a therapist it is often necessary to understand what our client is experiencing. It is our obligation to want to help the client work through their problems and reach a positive state of mind. There are many approaches to how a client should be handled. Doing the right thing for others means helping those in need. Being with them as equals throughout their sessions is important too rather than behaving in and one-up or superior position. The client needs to feel that they have someone who wants to help and can be trusted. In this paper I will discuss my view on helping, my views on the relationship between the client and therapist, techniques or approaches to helping, problems addressed in this model, multicultural issues, limitations and strengths, the population this model can help, and my original thinking.
