Working with kids was something I couldn’t imagine myself doing until the summer of my freshman year in high school. Being with kids made me want a job working with younger people. They brought me joy, which made me want to brighten their lives. As a nurse, there is something I would look forward to every day because there may be things that come up that isn’t expected. Nursing is a chance to connect with the patients and bring joy to them, despite whatever they may be facing. A specific field of nursing that stands out to me is neonatal and pediatric nursing because it is focused on premature babies and younger children. To become a nurse, I will be trained to take care of the patients and provide the attention and care that is required. UCLA includes direct entry into nursing compared to other schools so that I can take the required courses for nursing earlier. Although the requirements to become a nurse may be overwhelming at times, I am eager to take on the challenge because the clinical courses prepare me well for everyday situations. The focus on science and research that is taught will help me overcome the challenges I have …show more content…
Being in sports teams such as volleyball and track and field helped me connect with other people that I wouldn’t normally talk to. Volleyball is a fall sport, while track and field is a spring sport and both sports go on for about three months. Each week, my team and I would spend around ten hours a week bonding because of practice. This helped me see their joy for the sport even though we may be of different races. During our free time, I am able to hear and learn about their cultural experiences and see the individual’s personalities stand out on the volleyball court. When we have team bonding, each member of the team unconsciously brings a type of food from their culture. Doing this shows our differences and how we can still work well

Personal Narrative: A Career As A Certified Emergency Nurse

...Obtaining certification in a specialty validates expertise and it has only been ten months since I graduated nursing school. With that being said, I am not currently certified in my specialty. As a new grad, I didn’t feel like I had the knowledge and skills needed to become certified in my specialty. However, I do have plans after this term to study for my Certified Emergency Nurse (CEN). According to Fumera (2014) the five main barriers to obtaining certification “include no time to study, high initial cost, no monetary incentive and no reimbursement, felt certification was unnecessary, and fear of failing the test” (p. E46). Although these don’t pertain to all nurses, they are real barriers to the millions of nurses who are not certified....

Personal Narrative: A Career As A Vietnam Nurse In Vietnam

...Vietnam through my TV screen. I was over 21, I had a master's degree in nursing, and I was white. So it was on that Friday night, coming back home from work, that I decided rather than to wait for someone to do something on my behalf it was time to actually put my words into action. For now I had all the advantage in doing so. When I first announced that I was registering in the territorial camp (although now I think of it, the camp was pretty useless as I haven’t put at least one of my training into practice ever since arriving in Vietnam) I was extremely discouraged by my fellow nurses and friends. Since the ‘be-all and end-all’ to them were marriage, and meanwhile announcing my ambitions as a war nurse had immediately denounced myself in being apart...

...Since I always have interest in helping people, I recently graduated from B.Sc. Nursing and now working in Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital. The main purpose why I have chosen this subject as B.Sc. Nurse has two fold, both to use my time for assisting sick and disabled and to try a hard at working in the medical environment. When I was looking into career options, nursing attracted my attention on so many levels. And I am pretty sure both purposes have been successfully met. Ever since I was asked for my aim I was sure about it. I want to be a helping agent. So I decided to become a nurse and I am assured that I made an important decision. I accomplished my School Leaving Certificate from Banepa. I never say I was extra talented and ploy student but I was always hardworking and reliable. Then I got admission in St Xaviers College. It's like a triumph to get admission there. Chasing my dream to become advanced and qualified nurse I applied in Institution of Medicine, Tribhuvan University. Hence I became a registered B.Sc. nurse from Tribhuwan University. I really enjoy seeing that even with my limited knowledge I was able to make a difference in the daily routine of the hospital. My best reward was the grateful smiles of the patients whom I could entertain with my personal stories and divert from the depressing daily reality. As for myself, I would say that these people were also real support for me as we develop a very friendly relationship that allowed me to short the...

Philosophy of Nursing

...Personal Philosophy of Nursing Cindy Lucas Jacksonville University November 12, 2012 Personal Philosophy of Nursing The nursing profession is not just a job, it is a higher calling. The amount of work, time, and emotion that goes into nursing practice holds nurses to a much higher standard than the average nine to five office job. Nurses must be proficient in a background of anatomy, physiology, and the way drugs and diseases work. Nurses must also combine that knowledge with sharp critical thinking skills and an unconditional compassion for humankind. While every nurse is unique in their own way, I hope the values that I have in my daily living can affect the way I conduct myself while on duty as a practicing nurse. The same theme seems evident in most nursing philosophies; caring, health and wellbeing, environment, and clinical excellence through education. As I contemplate what my philosophy of nursing is I have discovered that I also incorporate these aspects of nursing into my own personal values of what I believe it is to be a nurse. My personal belief system has always been that a nurse should possess strong ethical and moral values, a passion for caring, and a commitment to lifelong education. Ethical and Moral values One of the greatest challenges in nursing is how to integrate appropriately one’s own values and beliefs into the professional practice. The nurse’s primary commitment is to the patient and the patient’s family. Patient respect, advocacy...

Authentic Leadership

...obliged to embark on their own journey of personal development to earn the title leader (Whitmore 2012). The need for governance has mainly increased the pressures on organisations to have aspiring leaders with the skills needed for their fields of interest. This is supported by The Open University (on-line 2012) when it is suggested that clinical leadership is essential for service redesign, quality, innovation, productivity and prevention. It is recognised that in order to facilitate whole system approach in today’s National Health Service (NHS), leaders need to understand not only the people and culture they are trying to change, but also their own personality traits and how these may affect the process (Judge and Bono 2000, 754). In this regard a personal based analysis will be conducted, realising how far I have already gone concerning the developmental processes. I shall conduct a critical reflection (Gibbs 1988) of a personal leadership archaeology found in Appendix One. To facilitate the learning demonstrated two tools have been used; a full Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) assessment has been completed, which allows a level of understanding by analysing individuals’ preferences as they make up a personality. Secondly the Belbin team role self perception inventory (BTRSPI) has been completed by both self and observer assessments used to consider my role within the team. The completion of these tools, and my personal archaeology will allow this assignment to...
