After my foot surgery, I woke up two hours later and was sent home. Once home, I was still under the anesthesia not quite sleepy but wide awake. I wanted to vacuum my house, put the dishes away out of the dishwasher, clean my bathrooms, and mop the floors. Although I did that the night before, so I would come to a clean house. Merton (my husband) was not going for it, he ushered me to the bed. He said the medicine will wear of soon and then I will be in a lot of pain and that I needed to take my pain medicine before I actually had any pain and go to sleep. I was angry but, I did as I was asked. Although I was not in sleepy, I laid down and eventually feel asleep. I woke up to Merton telling me to take my pills. Unbeknownst to me that I had

...on November 3, 2008. D.K.’s admitting diagnoses are Debility, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Triple Arthrodesis on the right hind foot, GERD, Constipation, Hypertension, and Osteoporosis. I was the student nurse assigned to care for D.K. on clinical day November 10, 2008. Communication D.K.’s primary language is English, her speech is within normal limits and she had no difficulty communicating. The therapeutic communication techniques I used in communicating with the client were touch, eye contact, and open ended questions. The touch communication technique was very effective because it showed the client compassion towards the vulnerability the client was experiencing in the hospital. The client had excoriated skin located on her pubis, the primary nurse wanted the client to leave her undergarments off in order to let the skin to heal through air. The client was extremely vulnerable and a simple touch to the client’s hand gave the client a sense of compassion. I also used eye contact, maintaining eye-contact during conversation shows respect and willingness to listen. (Potter, P.A. & Perry, A.G., 2009, p. 345). This technique gave the client a feeling of comfort that someone was listening to her which prompted the to client open up and spoke to me about her life and her family. Using eye-contact with the client gave her a sense of trust in sharing her personal life with someone in such a vulnerable situation. Last but not least, I used open-ended questions to give the client room...

Education in Australia is very different to where I come from; it requires selflearning and self-reflection for overall development and self-improvement. Obviously the word “self” is important in education in Australia and from this perspective learning has become so much more real and enjoyable. One of the main reasons to choose English Writing is to express my thoughts, opinions and arguments in writing which I have never been encouraged to do before. Over the course of study I have developed various skills learnt different literary techniques and increased my vocabulary. This course is a very good platform for me to prepare myself for university, but I have been allowed to have an opinion...

...Victorian morality in general. After the death of his father, he scandalized his family and friends by setting up housekeeping with Caroline Graves, a young woman who already had a daughter, and presumably a husband. Even when the opportunity presented itself later in life, he refused to marry her, encouraged her to marry another man, and then moved in with her again when that marriage failed. In the meantime, he kept a mistress on the side, Martha Rudd, by whom he had three children. At his death, he divided his estate equally between his two mistresses and two families. Through much of his life, he was plagued by bad health. He was small and somewhat deformed, and rheumatism contracted in his thirties caused him to take increasingly-large doses of laudanum. He himself admitted that he was a bit of a hypochondriac, and eventually became a recluse much like Frederick Fairlie in The Woman in White. To please his parents, he tried the tea business for five years and later studied law, but had no love for either pursuit. He was drawn to the arts, as was his brother Charles, who for a time worked among the Pre-Raphaelites (and later married Charles Dickens’ daughter), and determined to be a writer. His big break came when he met Charles Dickens in 1851. The two were soon fast friends, collaborating on short stories for the magazine edited by Dickens. Collins’ first mystery novel was Basil (1852), followed by two plays, The Lighthouse (1855) and After Dark (1856), which Dickens...

Americal Literature

...American Literature Journal Writing Tabish Jaleel Shaikh March 10(Saul Bellow- Seize the Day) Seize the Day was a comparatively easy read, and seemed like a very real life depiction of American life, from the eyes of the two generations, Tommy Wilhelm and his father, Dr. Adler. Comparing it to one of the first novels I read in this course, Death of a Salesman, I realize that Seize the Day also has the theme of the broken myth of the American dream embedded in the story. Also the title of the novel struck me at first, but I could not remember where I had read or come across this phrase before. Upon searching online, I remembered that it has its origin in one of the poems of a Latin Poet Horace, the word being “Carpe diem” in Latin. I remembered that I had read this back in high school, the stanza of the poem was:   While we speak, envious time will have {already} fled Seize the day, trusting as little as possible in the future. It’s interesting how just a small phrase can carry so much meaning. Saul Bellow has very effectively depicted the philosophy of carpe diem by narrating a real life scenario of war stricken America where maximizing the utility of time is the very important. Although the theme of alienation and isolation is prevalent throughout the book through Tommy’s life events, Saul could not make me feel sympathetic towards Tommy. Tommy’s inability to judge himself, and be self-aware of his strengths and weaknesses causes his downfall. He is always...

Secrecy Surrounding the Practice of Female Circumcision in Mabvuku and Tafara Surburbs

...CHAPTER ONE INTRODUCTION Female circumcision is a traditional practice performed on girl children as part of initiation rituals into adulthood. This inquiry seeks to demystify the secretiveness surrounding this practice, seeking to establish the reasons why female circumcision remains a taboo subject. In doing so, the researcher will attempt to establish the local community’s perception of female circumcision and elucidate some of the reasons practitioners cite as benefits of female circumcision. The research focuses on Mabvuku and Tafara suburbs because there are people of different ethnic groups with varying customs and values that shape their behaviour and way of life. Mabvuku and Tafara have an unusually high concentration of people of Malawian, Mozambican and Zambian origin who migrated to seek work mostly before the Zimbabwean independence. Due to this diversity, women and girls who have undergone female circumcision were interviewed. Mabvuku is a high-density suburb some seventeen kilometres east of Harare. It is classified as a suburb or township of Harare, with the Harare City Council constituting local government. This inquiry is exploratory, descriptive and qualitative in nature, based on interviews with women who had undergone the practice in Mabvuku-Tafara. The inquiry can be termed therefore, a qualitative research done through a case study design. This research method is preferred because the researcher is exploring a subjective understanding of social reality...

Restitance to Information Technology Implementation

...Lapointe & Rivard/Resistance to IT Implementation RESEARCH ARTICLE A MULTILEVEL MODEL OF RESISTANCE TO INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY IMPLEMENTATION1 By: Liette Lapointe Faculty of Management McGill University 1001 Sherbrooke Street West Montreal, Quebec H3A 1G5 Canada liette.lapointe@mcgill.ca Suzanne Rivard HEC Montreal 3000 Côte Ste-Catherine Road Montreal, Quebec H3T 2A7 Canada suzanne.rivard@hec.ca of the nature of the relationships between these components and (2) refine our understanding of the multilevel nature of the phenomenon. Using analytic induction, we examined data from three case studies of clinical information systems implementations in hospital settings, focusing on physicians’ resistance behaviors. The resulting mixeddeterminants model suggests that group resistance behaviors vary during implementation. When a system is introduced, users in a group will first assess it in terms of the interplay between its features and individual and/or organizational-level initial conditions. They then make projections about the consequences of its use. If expected consequences are threatening, resistance behaviors will result. During implementation, should some trigger occur to either modify or activate an initial condition involving the balance of power between the group and other user groups, it will also modify the object of resistance, from system to system significance. If the relevant initial conditions pertain to the power of the resisting group vis-à-vis the system...
