The way queerness is depicted between the two storylines have been drawn out in two very unique, yet equally effective within the messages that the books portrayed. Queerness, usually a word or phrase that describes a type of sexuality, it correlates to both of these texts we’ve read in class, but also has used queerness to describe occurrences and plots that are typically seen as non-normative. Living in the 21st Century we are structured by gender and the seemingly inevitable issues in accepting sexualities that aren’t simply male or female, and within these two novels of Middlesex and Fun Home, we read about two young characters finding themselves while they undergo their personal struggles being queer individuals in America. I will begin my essay by comparing the queerness related factors between the main characters in these two books. In Middlesex our main character and narrator Calliope or Cal Stephanides grew up a biological male that was raised as a girl with a syndrome called a 5-alpha-reductase deficiency. During puberty Cal begins to realize that his body is not following the normal pattern of development for a female. That it is deceptive by only exploring Walter White’s (actor) problems rather than the drug problem as a whole, specifically the urban poor. The middle class focus left questioning if it is the greatest series of all time, as popularly reported. The show squarely represents the target audience; forty-something, middle class, good living, conservative, suburban white America in the midst of an economic downturn, where the equilibrium (Todorov) of health and fortunes are pulled away from under them. Walter’s response conforms exactly to the American Dream; he personalises responsibility for other’s (bankers/corporations) actions, looks to himself to seek out opportunity, he becomes the entrepreneur, a manufacturer of a commodity much in demand. The middle class however can relate to the problems as it almost mirrors them. I got thinking and decided this argument really excites me and can write a lot about this argument prompted from breaking bad. The wider drug problem isn’t explored, but it is interesting as there is a lot to argue, in the fact it narrates the story from the middle class perspective. What exactly does Fowler represent? Is it the wisdom and world-weariness of Old Europe or Britain’s involvement in the war simply for personal gain? | The symbolism of the individual characters has to be placed within the context of colonialism, since that was the relationship between the nations they each represented. Pyle's motives are far from heroic. An idealism that is motivated by interventionism in a Third World country's affairs can be dangerous and destructive, not only in the way Graham Greene saw it in the early fifties, but as history proved it by the events that unfolded years later, leading to the US war in Viet Nam. Or for what is happening now in Iraq, if you will. Fowler had the "old colonialist" wisdom that questioned Pyle's justification for violence. He had already learned that "democracy" is something many countries neither understand nor want, and any foreign attempt to impose it is doomed to failure.
