How could my dreams be crushed in one after-school meeting? How had I thought giving up would be a good choice? The worst, and best, decision I ever made was thinking that I would be better off not joining theater. My confidence level was below the chart when I realized that I was not as good as I thought I was. All this time, in junior high, I thought I was definitely a good actress, but I was dead wrong. I thought the best choice was to give up. I looked through other options, and by the end of sophomore year I found that I had an interest in accounting.

I knew the second that I walked in, I was not prepared to compete with these other individuals. The training and rehearsals I had gone through were nothing like these in high school. I had no hope left in me after we went over a scene. They were more creative and more improvisational than I ever would be. I had slower reactions, and stuttered when under pressure. I couldn't believe that the one thing I had hope in prospering in was obliterated. I would take this year and measure the pros and cons of taking theater and with that I would make my choice of pursuing this career or demolishing any thoughts on it. …show more content…
This was when I had to prove myself. Palms sweaty and voice shaking, I began my lines. I stuttered through a few words in the beginning, and silently scolding myself, I steadied my voice and continued. My accent wasn't perfect, but I worked really hard on it. Leaving the stage I felt a surge of emotion. Out of the spotlights blinding view, I broke down. I felt so inexperienced. There was no way I got the part, but somehow I had hope. A few weeks later I trudged to the auditorium and to no surprise, I hadn't made the part. I didn't make any part. I was left to be "techie". I couldn't be more embarrassed. That year I did as I was told and stayed behind the scenes. I was going to have to be a part of something

Personal Narrative: Life After High School

...The first five years of my life after high school were thrown away. Sad to say, I allowed my peers to decide what type of person I was going to be. We didn’t take life seriously, and that was the biggest problem. It was my twelfth grade in high school, and due to my background with getting into various altercations during or after school, I was told by the principal, “You don’t have to come back to school until final exams and graduation.” Yes! I thought, I’m only going to school for one class anyway. My mentality and structure were fixed on getting a job. Even though my dad didn’t spend enough time with helping me to plan my future out, I was a follower of what I saw being done, and that was working hard to make a living. Now I was seventeen...

Then when we would move back, my grades would deteriorate because I was now two years behind the rest of the class. After a few years of this, it was now time for high school and we just relocated again. The journey to and from school every day for a year I passed through what we called the hood (ghetto). ...If you give yourself a chance, you just might surprise yourself. I did just that and found a talent I never knew I had. I reluctantly accepted the constant pleads from my friends to audition for the school musical The Pajama Game. They had been in the plays before and always reminisced on the unforgettable moments the crew had together. They egged me on saying, “You’ll love it,” and, “It will be so fun if we all are in it together.” I tried everything in my power to decline the invitation with explanations of my glossophobia (fear of public speaking) and severe allergic reaction when I stand on a stage, but no one would buy it. And there I was, Michelle the student athlete without any drama experience, about to try out for the school musical....

...2018 walked across the football field signifying their entry into adulthood. The past 17 to 18 years have passed quickly; time always does. As a parent, I am amazed at how much my own children have grown and changed in the past three and a half years. Their lives are just beginning, too, in a different sense. Their personalities are still forming, their understanding of the world is vastly and rapidly expanding with each day, and they are literally taking first steps and experiencing milestones at every turn. Seven months ago, Jordan decided to make his presence known. Reflecting with several of my students who were in the senior speech class that sent me off to the hospital, we were all in such disbelief over how fast those months passed and how quickly the school calendar disappeared. Personal Narrative: My Life After High School

...After graduating high school, I was always told to go to college. But no one really gets into the details of all the paperwork before college, the reality check of cost of tuition, books, fees, the competition for programs, hours spent during homework, etc. All I knew was that college cost money, that I didn’t have, so I figure getting a job, working, and save up some money. As a young adult with no real responsibility, no car bills, cheap rent, no credit card or loan debt, a decent day to day job would seem like some real money for a just graduated, first job young adult. Well that’s what I thought at least. Sounds simple enough but now I know that without the right support and guidance, my life would’ve remained the same. Day to day job, just barely getting by. That’s what turned into “my after high school plans.” Work and save a little money here and there for college. That work turned into waiting tables at restaurants. At any new place it can be intimidating, being the new person. But as everyone gets to know each other, you connect with people you share common interest with. The wife's talk about their kids or their husbands. The party goers plan the next...

Studies in Professional Life and Work

...STUDIES IN PROFESSIONAL LIFE AND WORK Mike Hayler University of Brighton, UK Autoethnography, Self-Narrative and Teacher Education examines the professional life and work of teacher educators. In adopting an autoethnographic and life-history approach, Mike Hayler develops a theoretically informed discussion of how the professional identity of teacher educators is both formed and represented by narratives of experience. The book draws upon analytic autoethnography and life-history methods to explore the ways in which teacher educators construct and develop their conceptions and practice by engaging with memory through narrative, in order to negotiate some of the ambivalences and uncertainties of their work. The author’s own story of learning, embedded within the text, was shared with other teacher-educators, who following interviews wrote self-narratives around themes which emerged from discussion. The focus for analysis develops from how professional identity and pedagogy are influenced by changing perceptions and self-narratives of life and work experiences, and how this may influence professional culture, content and practice in this area. Autoethnography, Self-Narrative and Teacher Education Autoethnography, Self-Narrative and Teacher Education STUDIES IN PROFESSIONAL LIFE AND WORK The book includes an evaluation of how using this approach has allowed the author to investigate both the subject and method of the research with implications for ...
