I met with the preoperative nurse at the front desk at 6:30 am. He asked me to go change into the surgical scrub and meet him back at the front desk. After that, the nurse and I went to get the patient from his room. We stopped at the nurses’ station to get a report of the patient’s condition by the nurse. Then we went to the patient’s room. In the patient’s room, the patient was crying on his mother’s shoulder. The father came into the room dressed in all scrub and he carried the patient to the operation room for his surgery. The patient’s father remained in the operation room until the patient was unconscious. During this experience, I learned that there were many steps in order to achieve a successful operation. For example, the nurse and I couldn’t bring the patient into the operation room until everything was set up and ready to go. During the surgery, I felt anxious because they were doing surgery on a small child and I was overwhelmed by the amount of people in the operation room. I felt that the nurse and I didn’t do much, but instead, we observed the operation closely from the beginning to the end. After the surgery was done, the anesthesiologist turned the patient to his side and waited for him to gain his consciousness
