Throughout the past two years I have been part of many extracurricular activities, volunteer, and work experiences that have enriched my high school experience. I was the captain of the girls cross country team and of the track and field team. I was responsible of leading the runners throughout workouts and races with positivity. I also have been an active member in clubs including Medi-careers and Hispanic Youth Leadership Council. Medi-careers club gave me the opportunity to learn about different professions in the medical field. In the Hispanic Youth Leadership Council club, I have worked with others to spread the Hispanic culture through events that spread the unique traditions. Helping others overcome economic and psychological challenges has truly help form the person I am today. I have volunteered at the Salvation Army by serving food to homeless individuals on Sundays. Sometimes the community forgets about homeless individuals and they are human beings who need support. They share their hardships with me and I try to be someone they can talk to so they don't feel lonely. I have also volunteered in Project Blanket which is an organization that helps make fleece blankets for low-income individuals and for cancer patients. We then distribute the blankets to local hospitals and churches. …show more content…
On Saturdays, I serve food to guests at special events and make sure that the invitees are satisfied with their food. I have developed social skills through this job. During the summer, I also worked with my parents as a apricot and peach harvester. I learned more about the sacrifices my parents make to raise my siblings. I helped my family economically and I bought my own school materials so that my parents did not have to worry about another

Personal Narrative: My High School Experience

...I began running cross country in the summer between my freshman and sophomore year of high school. I started running as a way to stay active and as a stress relieving mechanism from the pressures of school. However, to my surprise, I quickly developed a love for the sport and enjoyed being part of something larger than myself. Running soon became the highlight of my high school experience. Being on the team taught me a significant amount about sportsmanship and the fundamentals of training. As a result I became a better runner and person. This all came to an end once I broke my foot my senior year of high school. The meet I had been looking forward to the most throughout my senior year was an annual race my school hosted called Jungle Run....

Personal Narrative: My Experiences In High School

...Being raised by an impoverished Hispanic family led to my parents desiring the very best for me. A preconception that friends were distractions and that education was the first priority was instilled within me from a very young age. At first, throughout my years in Meadowbrook Elementary and Seminole Middle school, I was able to keep up with all of my academics by myself. Soon, however, this concept of a free for all environment within a high school setting was, in hindsight, a disadvantage in the long run. By not creating those ever-lasting connections with other students from an early age, I entered high school as a lone wolf, which resulted in carrying all of my academics on my own shoulder compared to others who worked amongst each other to be more...

Personal Narrative: My Experience At Legacy Options High School

...Introduction After completing the Student Teacher Residency program where I had a full year student teaching experience at DCIS Montbello teaching Biology, I got my first full time teaching job at Legacy Options High School. Our students come from a variety of backgrounds for a variety of reasons. Legacy Options is a pathway school specializing in credit recovery. In my classroom I receive a new group of students every twelve weeks. Many of my students are English Language Learners (ELLs). All of our current students are from a minority population including: African American. American Indian, Vietnamese, Hispanic, and Haitian. Many of my students are undocumented and from low income families. All of my students have self declared their commitment to their educations during their interview to be accepted to the school. Due to the environment at Legacy Options students are accepted only after passing application and interview with principal. That being said, if a student has proven through actions that they go in front of a panel of teachers and staff members and plead their case to stay. Then the staff votes. I have only seen this happen with three students...

Personal Narrative: My Elementary, Middle, And High School Experience

...Luverne Koerselman (Grandpa) Interview How was your Elementary, Middle, and High school experience? I grew up West of Matlock and went to school in Matlock. No matter the weather, my older brother, older sister, along with myself, had to walk to school every morning. This walk, or bike ride, was about a half mile and sometimes in the winter people would offer to drive us to school which was very kind of them. But sadly, I was quite shy and never accepted their offer, so in turn, my sister nor my brother could take the ride either because they couldn’t leave me alone. My mom didn’t have a license and my dad worked at the elevator in Matlock and didn’t have time to drive us. This...

Studies in Professional Life and Work

...STUDIES IN PROFESSIONAL LIFE AND WORK Mike Hayler University of Brighton, UK Autoethnography, Self-Narrative and Teacher Education examines the professional life and work of teacher educators. In adopting an autoethnographic and life-history approach, Mike Hayler develops a theoretically informed discussion of how the professional identity of teacher educators is both formed and represented by narratives of experience. The book draws upon analytic autoethnography and life-history methods to explore the ways in which teacher educators construct and develop their conceptions and practice by engaging with memory through narrative, in order to negotiate some of the ambivalences and uncertainties of their work. The author’s own story of learning, embedded within the text, was shared with other teacher-educators, who following interviews wrote self-narratives around themes which emerged from discussion. The focus for analysis develops from how professional identity and pedagogy are influenced by changing perceptions and self-narratives of life and work experiences, and how this may influence professional culture, content and practice in this area. Autoethnography, Self-Narrative and Teacher Education Autoethnography, Self-Narrative and Teacher Education STUDIES IN PROFESSIONAL LIFE AND WORK The book includes an evaluation of how using this approach has allowed the author to investigate both the subject and method of the research with implications for ...

Compare and Contrast: the Advantage of Narratives over Descriptive

...want a wife”, both authors write on personal encounters they experienced. The author chooses two different methods of writing styles. E.B. White utilizes a nostalgic reflective descriptive piece, whereas Brady uses a more sarcastic narrative. Arguably both writers do a great job in their story telling skills. Both stories are respected and pleasing, yet similar but different at the same time. The authors’ choice of writing style is what gives one story more of an advantage to the other. Though descriptive and narrative essay have identical intent – to tell the reader a story- narratives are more effective in capturing the audience because the uses of different voices, they bring ideas into perspective and they are relatable. There are special components that both style of writing possesses. Narrative writing usually does not stress adjectives to give the physical details of characters, setting or events in the story. Nothing like descriptive writing, narrative writings are written in the first person in order to convey the author's attitudes, beliefs and memories. Narratives are conventional, while descriptive writings content often emphases on a single event, object or place. Occasionally, writers utilize narrative writing style to tell about the past or the future in broad terms. A narrative often reflects personal experience, clarifying what happened during some sort of incident. Narrative essay topics include recounting an experience where the learned something significant...

Portfolio: Narrative Analysis

...Second Semester Final Exam: Portfolio A: Narrative/Descriptive Writing Parasailing (Vignette) Narrative and descriptive writing is the writing style I enjoy the most. The vignette I wrote about is a story that happened to me when I was younger and this kind of writing allows me to relive this memory on paper. I find this kind of writing easier to write and easy to relate to because it’s all about me. It is harder for me to write and relate to a book that we read in class since it isn’t about my personal life. This kind of writing style helps me reflect on the something I learned because I have seen how much I have grown this school year based off of what I wrote about and my writing style. This kind of writing style allows me to describe...

Social Work Lervice Learning

...| Service Learning Experience | | | | I chose Teen Night at Fort Boise for my service learning project this semester. With the idea behind Teen Night being that there is an option for kids to get out, socialize and participate in many different experiences on a Friday night, in order to try to keep them from choosing activities that would be poor choices and possibly getting in trouble. Although this activity is open to any junior high and high school student in the area, I realized very quickly that most of the teens that attended could easily be labeled as “high risk” teens. Many of them have very stressful/negative settings at home. For some of the teens this was easily identifiable quickly. Others were very good at hiding their troubles. I enjoyed serving my service learning hours at Fort Boise, but, in a way, I wish I would have chosen an organization where I would have been able to get a little closer to the people, on a personal level. Teen Night was just more of group interaction (playing basketball, dodge ball, video games, etc.). There was one teen (Will) I was able to form a bond with that was, originally, very closed off. I later found out, from one of the other volunteers, there were concerns of suicide with Will. I will discuss this bond further into the paper, but I will say that connecting with Will was the highlight of my service learning. In an article from 1995 about the Adolescent Transition Project which was a study conducted in...

Personal Narrative

...PERSONAL NARRATIVE 1 When taking a look at how my life has changed over the past five years I can truly and honestly say that I would never have expected the things that have happened. Back in June 2007 I was separated from my husband and moved into my own apartment. I was in the United States Navy for six and a half years at that time. My divorce was finalized in January 2008 and I deployed to Afghanistan in March 2008, for eight months. After coming home from a long deployment, I had orders to move to Lemoore, California. This area is nothing but farm lands and I did not like that at all. I was born and raised in Southern California and enjoyed the fast-paced life that I was living. It is amazing how things have changed. In July 2011 I was honorably discharged from the United States Navy and I moved back in with my mother and two younger sister. Growing up we lived in a condo in Diamond Bar, California, but that all changed over time. The same time that I got out of the military, myself, my sisters and my mother had to move out of our condo and into a two bedroom apartment. Talk about a huge change in life. This move has not been easy for any of us. There is no privacy and we all have to share the living space. I share a bed with my middle sister and my mother shares a bed with my youngest sister. I never thought that I would be unemployed for this long, but it has been over a year since I got discharged. It seems like nobody is hiring right now...

Research Spotlight on Peer Tutoring

...opportunity to understand better the material being studied. What does the research say about peer tutoring? In reviews of peer tutoring programs, researchers found: * When students participated in the role of reading tutor, improvements in reading achievement occurred * When tutors were explicitly trained in the tutoring process, they were far more effective and the students they were tutoring experienced significant gains in achievement * Most of the students benefited from peer tutoring in some way, but same-age tutors were as effective as cross-age tutors (Burnish, Fuchs & Fuchs, 2005; Topping, 2008)  Some benefits of peer tutoring for students include higher academic achievement, improved relationships with peers, improved personal and social development as well as increased motivation. In turn, the teacher benefits from this model of instruction by an increased opportunity to individualize instruction, increased facilitation of inclusion/mainstreaming, and opportunities to reduce inappropriate behaviors (Topping, 2008). There is an old saying: “To teach is to learn twice.”  Peer tutoring is a beneficial way for students...

Susan Cain Introverts

...exterior world, or introverts, which focus on their inner worlds. Over the years, American society has begun to promote an Extrovert Ideal, valuing charisma over discipline. However, introverts are still important in all aspects of our world's function. False ideas of extrovert superiority are evident in many roles. Introverts can be just as successful as leaders, due to their attentiveness. Individual thinking promotes creativity, as groups can stifle ideas through peer pressure and distraction. To truly understand introverts, there have been studies on the origin of temperament, the most promising theory being that introverts are born highly reactive and greatly influenced by stimuli while extroverts were born the opposite. Being high-reactive means introverts respond more dramatically to physical sensations as well as emotions like embarrassment and guilt. On the other hand, extroverts' low-reactivity cause them to be reward...

Narrative for Lifespan Development

...Narrative of Adolescence Years Abstract This paper is a narrative of my adolescent years from twelve to eighteen. I label these years of awkwardness and pain off a hit show from the early nineties called, “The Growing Pains.” Similar to the characters in the show I struggled creating a personal identity and had difficulty blending in with societal norms. As a result I suffered from much insecurity, false conceptions of beauty, and depression. Up until writing this paper I felt these ideologies and feelings were better left in the past. However, I now understand these experiences shape my current beliefs and will affect my identity as a counselor. Therefore I must address these experiences and deal with them emotionally. As I relive these moments I will correlate my development with the research of the following theorist: Piaget, Erikson, and Seltzer. By showing correlation of my development with their theories I will prove many of experiences as an adolescence were typical of an American teenager. Looking into the mirror I was frustrated. Why isn’t my hair pretty? Other girls wear their hair straight. Why did mine always have to be braided? Why couldn’t I have a relaxer to smooth out my curls? I shook my head in frustration and began to look for the hot comb. On my first day of middle school I was going to look pretty like everyone else. I was going to have my hair straight and laid to the side. My mother usually kept the hot comb under the kitchen sink...
