April 28, 2013 was the day that my life changed forever, that was the day that I found out that my mom had breast cancer. She sat my sister and me down on the living room couch, took a deep breath, and anxiously said, “I was diagnosed with stage one breast cancer.” The words were devastating, but I could tell by her unsettled voice that they were hurting her more. I was stunned, but at the same time I had been noticing a change in her demeanor. She kept saying that she was going to be fine, it wasn’t terminal, and that I needed to focus on going into high school in the next four months. However, high school was the last thing on my mind. She encourages new cancer patients to fight their battles just like other survivors encouraged her. Her assiduity to helping others and camaraderie has inspired me to get involved as well. Consequently, I plan to do an unpaid internship at the American Cancer Society, or other association, during college and coordinate a Relay for Life team for the upcoming summer. I have learned just how important this aberration has been in my life. I was fortuitous that my mom survived, when so many of my peers’ parents did not. It is pertinent that I give back to the people who let me keep my mom. My mom taught me to be brave, confident, strong, and to never lose hope. She taught me how to bravely face my problems and never abandon my dreams. I learned to keep a smile on my face even when everything in my life points in a negative direction. And most importantly, she has taught me just how important family is. She is so strong and tenacious. I hope to grow up to be as incredible as her
