Personal Narrative: My Interview With Julie Belongia

On a beautiful Saturday afternoon I had the pleasure of interviewing Julie Belongia on March 26, 2016. The interview was held at the Belongia residence which is a small brick modern home that is placed in the country. I sat down with Julie at her dining table to start the interview process. My relationship with my interviewee is that she is my mother so we are very comfortable with one another. Julie was very open with me when I was asking her questions regarding our family security and insecurity. While Julie was answering the questions I was asking I was writing down everything she had said and taking close notes word by word of what she had said. During some of…show more content… Right now John and Julie are living pay check to pay check, just like the Jenners in the book Cut Adrift. In Cut Adrift, Eddie says, “We just worry short term, how to get to the next day” (Cooper, 200). That is how John and Julie live is from day to day. But a difference is that compared to the Jenners they are not racking up debt because all of their children are out of the house. John and Julie have savings put away for retirement, but they can’t help their children pay for school. The children fill out and apply for scholarships because they are not financially stable enough to pay for their children’s education. The Belongia’s rely on living day to day from paycheck to paycheck. They worry about their retirement and how they are going to be able to afford living comfortably in this insecure…show more content… Money is an everyday stress for Julie and she constantly worries about making payments on time. John brings in the money, but it isn’t enough for the family. She even receives calls from the bank because she is late on a payment which makes her more stressed and she just ignores the call. In Cut Adrift, Laura Delgado experiences calls also, but in this case it is not as severe as Laura Delgado’s experience. John has experienced a secure job since he has been working for the same company since 1988. Unlike most people, John did not have to worry about the instability of his job which is similar to what Eddie Jenner experienced. But with John’s secure job, the family is still struggling with money and the bills they have to pay. With this massive insecurity John and Julie have to experience they both cope with their worries
