Though I believe that our life experiences shape who we become, I also think that the people we become is somewhat a product of things we cannot control or decide for ourselves. For me, one event that stands out as having molded me into the person I am today happened before I was born. When my mom was eight months pregnant with me, she met with her obstetrician to schedule her cesarean section. At first, her doctor recommended that she schedule the C-section for September 22nd, unaware of my mother’s firm belief in zodiac signs and dislike for Virgos. After explaining to her doctor, while attempting to come off least like a crazy, crystal ball-worshipper as possible, that she did not want me to be a Virgo, my mother managed to convince her doctor to push back the delivery date by one week. Consequently, I was born on September 29, 1997, safely under the astrological sign of Libra. To some, believing strongly in zodiac signs may seem superstitious, maybe even foolish, but I am forever grateful for my mother’s determination in requesting that I be born a Libra. Spending three hours in my dad’s car for nightly practice meant juggling schoolwork with athletics—an uncommon task for most nine year olds. Completing my homework in the backseat of my dad’s car might have not been such a challenge, if I did not suffer from severe car sickness and if he hadn’t driven like such a maniac. Despite these obstacles, I always finished my assignments during the commute. This routine continued for 11 years, until I began driving myself, which meant finding other times to stay on top of schoolwork. The constant balancing act between school, soccer and a social life has become second nature at this point, a skill I apply to every situation I am in--as balance is a way for Libras to navigate and solve
