Personal Narrative: My Personal Michigan Hero

“My Personal Michigan Hero” is my grandma. She contributed her time and effort into making the community better, giving back to the younger generations, and has given me warm memories. She volunteers for Read Muskegon, a group who helps people who maybe didn’t have going to school as an option, or who are slower learners than others. Also, she tutors a lady who wants to become an American citizen in the US. It is amazing to see and hear about the differences that are occurring. It is those experiences that you can’t buy, can’t trade for, or even work out a deal to acquire. You have to go above and beyond to earn it, and gives the best reward over everything.
My grandma contributes her time in two major ways. First off, she helps at an organization

Personal Narrative: My Personal Michigan Hero

...My Personal Michigan Hero What is a hero? A hero is someone who you look up to, admire, and hope to someday be like. A hero is someone who helps you when you need it, and makes you smile on your bad days. One of the people in my life that I look up to, and admire is one of my friends, Seth Bilkes. One of the reasons Seth is my Michigan Hero is because he sets a great example for me. Seth is genial to lots of people. He tries to be as friendly as possible, and includes everyone. Yes he has his close friends, but he also has fellow classmates he will include if they have no one to hang out or work with. When he sees someone who might need help, he jumps right in to make them feel welcome. This shows me that when someone needs someone they can talk to, or needs someone to work with, I need to welcome them, whether I want to or not. I need to be a friendly person, and include anyone who is feeling left out....

Personal Narrative: My Michigan Hero

...My Michigan Hero CJ Weiss My Michigan hero is my dad. Dad has always been a giver. From baseball games to doctors’ visits. Dad always makes time for us kids. From the biggest problem to (in our minds) the biggest. The first memory I want to share is Father’s Day, 2014. Some will say that he took me so he had company, but if he had couldn’t he have taken Mom, an Uncle or a buddy from work ? He took me for my first Tigers game at Tigers Stadium. It’s 7a.m. it’s a bit crisp from last night but, hey, I’m not complaining. I’m in my Tigers t-shirt, phone in shorts. I’m a little tired but it’s completely over whelmed by the excitement. We just pulled out of the driveway and I turn and ask “Hey dad? Do you have the tickets…” I was met with silence as he pulled back into the driveway. I hear him mutter as he gets out “Knew I forgot something!”...

Literature

...Poetry, prose, sonnets, drama, plays, short stories and novels are concepts that first came to my mind when I think in the question “What is literature?” The definition of literature has change over time. The only thing that is certain about the meaning of literature is that the definition will change. The concepts about what is literature about also change over time. In order to get a clear understanding of exactly what literature is, first we need to know its definition. According to the Merriam-Webster, literature is defined by “the body of written works produced in a particular language, country, or age; the body of writings on a particular subject: printed matter.”  Literature has to do with letters, but some people often think that literature is only one thing, not knowing that it is composed by several elements that we use every day. These important elements include poems, prose, sonnets, drama, plays, short stories and novels. Poetry is created from the soul. It comes from your emotions and it needs every piece of creativity inside you. It has been called the art of “saying the unsayable” because trough this you can express your feelings with no limit, and nobody can tell you that is wrong. If you make a poem and you think it is not good enough, well it is no good. You as the author or the reader, can only judge if it is good or but for you but maybe for some one else it is the opposite as it is for you. A good place to start when looking back at how poetry...

Autobiographical Self-Representation in Ernest Hemingway’s the Old Man and the Sea

...Autobiographical Self-representation in Ernest Hemingway’s The Old Man and the Sea Twentieth Century American Fiction ¬¬¬¬   Art and Literature has its origin in man’s desire for immortality. This desire for eternal remembrance prompted primitive men to carve figures of himself and his surroundings in his dwelling places. As art developed and languages formed, the same desire enflamed and that became an impetus for literature. Early literature must have been a recording of real life events with strong and highly fictional additions. Thus, every literature is a product of this human desire to make oneself immortal through the recording of one’s own philosophy, imaginations and real life events. Even in the modern age this subconscious desire results in the inclusion of autobiographical elements of the author into his writings. Ernest Hemingway, America’s most celebrated novelist-cum -short story writer of the twentieth century is said to derive the impetus for his fiction from his own real life experiences or very rarely from the experiences of others who have went through agonies in life just like him. The Old Man and the Sea, one of his greatest and most widely read work is certainly filled with many allusions to his own life, and ideals. The Old Man and the Sea tells the story of an old fisherman named Santiago who fishes in the gulf stream. The man is having some bad time with fishing and has gone without fish for eighty five days. He is very poor and...

...A TEACHER’S GUIDE TO THE SIGNET CLASSIC EDITION OF BOOKER T. WASHINGTON’S UP FROM SLAVERY By VIRGINIA L. SHEPHARD, Ph.D., Florida State University S E R I E S E D I T O R S : W. GEIGER ELLIS, ED.D., ARTHEA J. S. REED, PH.D., UNIVERSITY OF GEORGIA, EMERITUS and UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA, RETIRED A Teacher’s Guide to the Signet Classic Edition of Booker T. Washington’s Up from Slavery 2 INTRODUCTION Booker T. Washington’s commanding presence and oratory deeply moved his contemporaries. His writings continue to influence readers today. Although Washington claimed his autobiography was “a simple, straightforward story, with no attempt at embellishment,” readers for nearly a century have found it richly rewarding. Today, Up From Slavery appeals to a wide audience from early adolescence through adulthood. More important, however, is the inspiration his story of hard work and positive goals gives to all readers. His life is an example providing hope to all. The complexity and contradictions of his life make his autobiography intellectually intriguing for advanced readers. To some he was known as the Sage of Tuskegee or the Black Moses. One of his prominent biographers, Louis R. Harlan, called him the “Wizard of the Tuskegee Machine.” Others acknowledged him to be a complicated person and public figure. Students of American social and political history have come to see that Washington lived a double life. Publicly he appeased the white establishment...

Make Sure You'Re Right, Then Go Ahead

...sixty thousand members of the National Rifle Association gathered in Houston, Texas for their 134th Annual Meeting. The keynote speaker for the event was embattled U.S. House Majority Leader, Representative Tom De Lay. After his speech, De Lay was joined on stage by Lee Hamel dressed as Davy Crockett in full buckskin attire and a coonskin hat. Hamel presented De Lay with a handcrafted flintlock rifle that he had made for the event with his mentor, Cecil Brooks. The presentation of the reproduction rifle to De Lay is part of a long NRA tradition that began in 1955 when Walt Disney‟s Davy Crockett series first appeared on television. When Charlton Heston received his handcrafted flintlock rifle in 1989, he uttered his famous words, “From my cold dead hands.” President Ronald Reagan and Vice President Dick Cheney also joined the list of those who received facsimile Davy Crockett flintlock rifles from a man dressed in Crockett buckskin attire. This tradition is part of the NRA‟s efforts to represent the gun as a key instrument in the founding of the United States. It secured this ideological representation in part by appropriating the mythology of early American heroes like Davy Crockett. Davy Crockett became emblematic of the gun mythology of early American life. This mythology was synergized by the NRA and popularized through children‟s television to promote a conception of the role of the gun in American cultural history consistent with its political agenda. Through...

It should be mandatory reading for anyone interested in engaging a company with big ideas who understands that leaders live and die by the quality of what they say.” —Richard Stone, story analytics master, i.d.e.a.s “A primary role of leaders is to create and maintain meaning for their organizations. ...book and because we enjoy talking and writing about pedagogy. Yet when we recall the discussions we’ve had with colleagues about instructor’s manuals over the years, two unnerving comments stick with us: “I don’t find them much help”; and (even worse) “I never look at them.” And, if the truth be told, we were often the people making such points! With these statements in mind, we have done some serious soul-searching about the texts that so many teachers—ourselves included—frequently malign or ignore. As we have considered our quandary, we have come face-to-face with the central paradox that characterizes the genre: Teaching manuals tend to be distant, mechanical, impersonal, and lifeless, when in fact good teaching is immediate, flexible, personal, and lively. In this manual, therefore, we have attempted to communicate to fellow teachers...
