1. How have you overcome failure and what did you learn from it?
The road ahead was rocky and steep. With one last exhale, I placed my foot onto the pedal and was off. The hill seemed to get steeper the further I got; my once eager legs began to tire and I had to stop.
Biking around my grandparent’s neighborhood without stopping is a family tradition. This seems fairly easy until you take into account the huge hill. Setting up my bike at the same starting point every time, I just couldn't make it up. That’s when I thought: Why was I starting at the bottom of the hill, arguable the most difficult part of the circle, when I could be going the other way? Immediately, I grabbed my bike and positioned it facing away from the hill. I feverishly …show more content…
A young girl motioned for me to help her make a beaded bracelet. I assembled the bracelet with the cord and beads she pushed my way, which spelled the word "HOPE." She smiled as I tied the bracelet onto her wrist and left a few minutes later; I could hear her giggling down the hall where she was to begin her grueling cancer treatment.
I was twelve years old then, but I try to practice every day what I learned that terrible year: I can make a difference. I don't need a large group or a lot of resources to help. I began making bracelets myself at home to give to the children at the hospital. I organized blood drives to provide blood during critical need periods. I looked beyond the hospital needs to other areas of my life. I tutored peers, and collected sturdy, reusable shopping bags for local food banks when I heard that they had plenty of food, but few ways for people to carry the food home. All are seemingly small gestures that make a big impact on the lives of the people they touch.
I do not know what became of the girl from the hospital, but I couldn't be more grateful for what she taught me. She gave me the gift of helping and allowed me to realize that I can be a leader in small ways as well as

Personal Narrative Of Overcoming Failure

...A time that really sticks out to me when I experienced failure was during my freshman year of high school. I was at a brand new school with not a lot of people that I knew from middle school. My first semester of freshman year I took Geometry with a teacher whose name was Mr. Seltzer. Within my first week at this school, I had heard an abundance of stories from upperclassman about this teacher. Therefore, I was already nervous for this class. As the semester went on, I was doing fairly well on the tests and quizzes. I always made a perfect score on the homework assignments, but for some reason on the tests and quizzes, my grades were in the eighty to ninety range. This was really odd to me because every class I had ever taken prior to this one, I had always made A’s. After I received my grade on every test, I would look over...

Family Counseling Approach: Narrative Counseling

...Through narrative therapy a counselor can help clients gain access to preferred story lines about their lives and identities taking the place of previous negative and self-defeating narratives that destroy the self. Presented in this paper, is an overview of the Narrative therapy and the Social Construction Model and several facets of this approach including poststrucuralism, deconstructionism, self-narratives, cultural narratives, therapeutic conversations, ceremonies, letters and leagues. A personal integration of faith in this family counseling approach is presented and discussed also in this paper. NARUMI AMADOR’S FAMILY CONSELING APPROACH Introduction Narrative therapy is found under the Social Construction Model. Using the Narrative approach, the therapist will not be the central figure in the therapeutic process, instead he will be influential to the client, helping him/her internalize and create new stories within themselves to draw new and healthier assumptions about who they are. This process enables clients to distract from focusing on the negative narratives which defined their past, redefining their lives into future positive stories. Narrative therapists define the problem as the problem instead of defining the client as the problem. The therapy process begins redefining the problem, externalizing it and getting it out in the open. The narrative therapist uses the questioning technique and creates alternative narratives to connect...

...Family Counseling Approach: Narrative Lisa R. Murray Liberty University Online Abstract Narrative therapy is a therapeutic approach that is used alone or in conjunction with other methods of therapy. Keywords: self-defeating, Narrative therapy, multigenerational, therapeutic Introduction Narrative therapy is considered apart of the Social Construction Model.   This particular type of therapy, the counselor or therapist is not a dominant entity or focal point of the process. Instead the therapist is seen as an influential individual to the client.   The counselor will aid the client with the process of internalization and the creation of new stories or narratives within themselves that help them to draw new assumptions about themselves. This is done through the process of the client...

Ovid's Metamorphoses

...by many other individuals for his creativity. Unlike many poets of his time, Ovid took an imaginative route to writing, by bestowing the themes of his poems to changes in shape. Moreover, the poet had an alternative goal, as well. Ovid strived to depict new ideals regarding love and challenge those instilled by Emperor Augustus. Through this, Ovid’s legacy inspired storytelling during the Middle Ages, themes for painting and sculpting during the Renaissance, as well as creating a stepping stone to modern English literature. Through the criticism and negative judgment made against him, Ovid’s originality, especially regarding Metamorphoses, has turned those failures into a great success, leaving a lasting effect on the modern world. The Metamorphoses is, first and foremost, an extraordinarily prolific resource for narratives, especially with stories of human personalities in conflict. This is a poem divided into fifteen books, written in about 8 B.C.E. All the poems possess a common theme; the idea of metamorphosis (or transformation,) usually with the addition of violence was conveyed. This gave virtually all the stories, a fundamentally dramatic quality, “since the violence frequently involves a helpless and protesting victim, the evidence for whose change often remains forever in the landscape, the heavens, or in the natural life around us.” This idea enabled Ovid to transform whatever story he seized upon into a situation potentially full of human pathos, something that transformed...

...relatable injustices with the obtrusion of evidence and lost in similar fashions. However, their efforts were not in vain, with an ex-DMV worker by the name of Mitsuye Endo overcoming the government's manipulation of the Constitution and systematic bias that infringed upon the rights of the people. Following her internment, her hired lawyer named James Purcell brought up the case to set the loyal Endo and her fellow Americans free. The Densho Encyclopedia, known for its knowledge on the narrative of many Japanese-Americans during WWII, explains how “In the unanimous U.S. Supreme Court decision on Ex parte Mitsuye Endo in December 1944, the court ruled that ‘citizens who are concededly loyal’ could not be held in War Relocation Authority concentration camps. The ruling led to Japanese-Americans being allowed to return to the West Coast and to the closing of the camps”. This idea of the people being the “rightful owners” of the court system, as Lincoln said, illustrates to what degree social justice can have an effect on the higher powers of government. Endo, a DMV worker fired for just being of Japanese descent, was isolated and was able to bring the Executive Order to its knees when adhering to the core values of the Constitution and keeping the powers of the government in check. Nevertheless, through the failures that preceded this landmark victory, it is evident that discrimination and persecution in the name of national security are not a necessary evil required to protect ourselves...

Title Ix Paper

...providing women far greater opportunities both in sports and outside of sports, the topic of how it is negatively affecting men’s sport is often debated. The five articles that I gathered advocate for Title IX. They express its positive impacts through narrative accounts and personal experiences of well-known female athletes who prospered due to Title IX not just in sports, but in their educational and professional careers. They also disprove the myths commonly associated with Title IX that lack evidence about how it is responsible for negatively affecting men’s sport opportunities and potentially ruining the programs currently in existence. Title IX is generally associated with women’s opportunity in sports to the point where its other positive implications tend to be forgotten. Title IX isn’t just about providing an opportunity for women to participate in sports in high school and at the college level, it is about providing young women the skills needed to achieve greater successes later on in life. Pugmire’s (2013) article quotes Women’s basketball legend Anne Meyers Drysdale saying the following: “According to the Women's Sports Foundation, 80% of women in Fortune 500 companies played sports. It teaches you so much -- confidence, failure, success, courage, how to get along. That's the business world. That's life. It's important for us to be continuing those lessons as long as we can”. He focuses his article around one of the great female athletes of the Title IX era to exemplify...

Strategic Leadership

...during their attempts to generate organizational achievement in VUCA environments. A leader's success will depend, to a great extent, upon understanding organizational culture. Schein contends that many of the problems confronting leaders can be traced to their inability to analyze and evaluate organizational cultures. Many leaders, when trying to implement new strategies or a strategic plan leading to a new vision, will discover that their strategies will fail if they are inconsistent with the organization's culture. A CEO, SES, political appointee, or flag officer who comes into an organization prepared to "shake the place up" and institute sweeping changes, often experiences resistance to changes and failure. Difficulties with organizational transformations arise from failures to analyze an organization's existing culture. WHAT IS ORGANIZATIONAL CULTURE? There is no single definition for organizational culture. The topic has been studied from a variety of perspectives ranging from disciplines such as anthropology and sociology, to the...

Old Testament Survey

...BOOK SUMMARY: ANCIENT NEAR EASTERN THOUGHT AND THE OLD TESTAMENT BY JOHN H. WALTON Old Testament Introduction OBST 510 May 4, 2014 Part 1 – Comparative Studies Chapter 1: History and Methods History: Walton begins the chapter with the “rediscovery of Egypt which began in the eighteenth century AD and of Mesopotamia in the mid nineteenth century AD.” There were discoveries of tens of thousands of texts that were excavated, translated and studied. Many of these tablets and texts did coincide with the Bible. Walton outlines comparative study which is the study that attempts to understand things when compared to their broader cultural context. The goal in this case is to understand the Old Testament compared to the ANE. There have been many debates on comparative study and the way in which is executed. Comparative studies deal with the cultures, myths, religions, worldviews and literature of all the people living in the ANE. A comparative study acknowledges that cultures are separate, but that these separate cultures are aware of and understand the religions and rituals of the other surrounding cultures and at times even engages in those rituals. Many of the Scholars were so biased that they tended to argue for the importance of the Old Testament, or vice-versa defended the mythology concept of scripture so vehemently that the cultural comparison was lost. Not until Friedrich Delitzsch, who was the son of the famous biblical commentator Franz Delitzsch, did a more focused...
