For as long as America can remember, women have been treated as lesser beings to the superior male. Growing up, I was constantly undermined because I am a female. boys would bully me and tell me I could not be strong or smart because of my gender. By eighth grade I was determined to stop letting people tell me what I could and could not do. As I registered for my freshman year classes, I was really trying to take classes that I thought I would enjoy and could possibly choose as a career path, regardless of what all my friends were taking. So, when I was a freshman I took a class called Sports Marketing and Entertainment, which was considered a boys only class. After taking that class I knew I wanted to be involved in Business Administration, …show more content…
Building a football team was a lot more work than anyone could know. I loved every part of the job! There were basic tasks like choosing a color, a name, and a mascot. But, there were also more in depth decisions such as location and what other uses the venue would have which required market research. I ended up being the Orange County Otters, based on my market research done on the best location I saw fit. This task helped me appreciate the business side of everything and what real work it took to build such amazing things. This project was not solely based on building the team itself, but also running the stadium. This included: staffing, parking, concession stands, and what the venue would be used for off season so we were still making money. After we had built our football team, we ran simulations where the teams we built would compete against the team's other students in the class had created. Our instructor told us that whoever won the championship game at the end would receive five extra credit points on the final we had coming up. As the games went on I sincerely tried my hardest to keep my team in line, and all other aspects of running a football stadium in tact. In the end, my team had won the championship game. Being able to prove to the class full of boys that a girl can do just as good with this football project, if not better, helped me be more confident in …show more content…
The second I knew we were allowed to choose our on player to represent, I knew exactly who I was going to choose; Bert Macklin, known as a fighter for an NHL team. Before I moved to California, I lived in Wisconsin. While I was living there I was training with Olympic Boxing Coach who had a gym in the hometown where Bert lived. My dad was old friends with the coach and I started training at his gym, which is where I met Bert. He was my sparring partner throughout my training, and I even helped him practice proper fighting technique for when the NHL season started up again. One of the main points of the project was to understand that you are representing a player, and your main job was basically to “talk them up” and make them more appealing to professional teams so they might draft the player for the upcoming season. You would include information about the players family life, what their skills and strengths are, what their goals are for the future, and why they would be a great addition to any team. This project really gave me more exposure to the tricks of Marketing and I completely fell in love with it! I loved knowing I was building a name for someone, that they were getting as much out of it as I was. With this project I really got to experience marketing in full and I truly fell in
