When I was five years old, My parents took me to Universal Studios for the very first time. Long lines, laughter, and cries of excitement were everywhere. And then, after I took a good look at all the fun rides and souvenir stores I knew we could’ve gone to, my parents took me to the horror house. I was so scared I could’ve peed in my pants. Upon reaching got to the horror house, the line was long enough to where it could be an excuse not to go, but my parents went on with it. The screams coming from the beginning alone were hair raising. Then, after an hour of waiting, it was my turn. Ahhh! I couldn’t tell what was making everyone scream, my eyes were shut, and when I reopened them, a big scary thing with bleeding eyes and a bloodcurdling roar was trying to escape from a straitjacket. At this point, I was crying, screaming, and doing whatever else a five year old in a horror house does. Up next, oh, I couldn’t tell, I was only five, but I do remember the maniac with a chainsaw. He was wearing one of those masks with the holes and his chainsaw sounded like it needed lubrication. That shriek made the hair stand on the back of my neck. The next room smelled like gunpowder. What room would …show more content…
What could be in a graveyard? As it turns out, everything. There was the sound of a church bell, and zombies came out and about everywhere. Bats were flying overhead, and I could feel the gust of wind they created, the noise of wings beating. I heard a medley of odd noises. I thought they were the false cries of others, but as it turns out, a medley of noises equated to a medley of really odd gross things. Apart from the zombies and bats, there where ghouls, vampires, weird green things that looked like blobs, and off in the distance, what appeared to be a manticore. At this point, I was beyond screaming and crying and closing my eyes, I was wondering what was wrong with my

...Collins uses the theme of crime and criminals and this is associated with the sensational genre and the theme of criminality. Throughout this extract there is a specific word choice based around crime and the theme of gothic horror. The theme of secrets also fits in well with this section as the by being the reader we can question the language used by Collins in Walters perspective. Collins in this extract shows Walters devout love for Laura from his perspective. Collins shows how much Walter is hurting and missing Laura. ‘My heart turns faint’ which enhances the theme of romance however this theme suddenly changes to a gothic horror theme ‘My mind sinks in darkness and confusion’ the choice of language here shows different meanings of the chosen words, ‘sinks’ becoming death and the death of Laura, and his ‘confusion’ of where she is. Walter knows Laura is alive and he is confused to how he is going to catch out Fosco and Glyde. ‘Darkness’ has an effect of gothic horror and a negative sense to it and it is used to make us feel the dark place where Walter is and Collins wants the reader to feel Walter’s heart break and how his dark place is taking him in. Collins uses the theme of secrets when in the first opening line in Walters narrative ‘I advance my narrative by one week’ this makes us question where Walter has been and why does Collins want the reader to know this, Collins wants this to effect the reader and make them question themselves because it will keep the reader interested...

...explore wider themes that are not immediately apparent to the viewer regarding subject matter. To put it simply, The X-Files goes beyond the limitations of horror and sci-fi. The creation of The X-Files emerged when a new and upcoming company called Fox joined network competitors such as NBC, ABC, and CBS. Fox, as a forerunner in showing television where viewers could not find anywhere comparable, embraced the unusual and controversial series based on the paranormal and bizarre phenomena. The show follows two FBI agents who investigate the paranormal from two different viewpoints, a believer and the other a skeptic. The X-Files on the Fox network was beginning nightly hour-long shows directed towards the teen to middle-aged viewers. In order to become popular for such a broad range of viewers, the series needed to attract these masses using a language they understood and meeting their expectations, such as desired genres. The mixture of the target viewer’s interests was arranged in the development of the show, The X-Files. The adolescent viewers were presented with a fictional domain of horror and sci-fi, while the adult viewers drawn in by the dramatic plot between the characters and the metaphorical themes through a multi-layered and multifaceted plot. Invisible Man Rhetorical Analysis

...Synthesis *Disclaimer: the views represented in the synthesis essay may not necessarily represent my personal opinions (I won’t write this disclaimer on the AP test). To live a meaningful life is awfully vague, for it can mean a life of happiness, of financial superiority, and of success. But the reason behind why the definition remains vague is clear: we become too obsessed with external factors and often forget ourselves--our character and our individuality. Thus, the prospect of a meaningful life continues to run away from us as we grow jealous of others who have more resources than we. To live a truly meaningful life that embraces both controllable and uncontrollable factors, we must resist trying to please others by avoiding the tendency...

Dorian Gray Imagery

...Imagery and setting are powerful tools that an artist will use to connect to their audience. These tools allow the artist to create pieces which convey complex ideas, but are shown in a simplistic style. Layers of Fear, which is heavily inspired by Oscar Wilde’s novel The Picture of Dorian Gray, employs its 19th century setting to create atmospheric imagery and a sense of unease as you are put in the perverse mind of an artist who’s become unhinged. Just as a piece of art, Layers of Fear makes use of a minimalistic approach to present complex, thought-provoking ideas as the player slowly unravels the mysteries of the game. The primary mystery of the game is to figure out its narrative and come to an understanding of the events occurring around...

The Armenian Genocide

...The tragedy that one Armenian family was forced to go through is captured in a single snapshot. Varter and Mugriditch Nazarian were a married couple who had their family torn apart by genocide. They lived in the village of Hussenig until one day they received a knock on their door. Mugrditch, the father, was taken from his home without even being given time to dress. The family did not know exactly what happened to him following this episode, although they were fairly certain that he was taken out of town and shot. A few days later, the mother, Varter was given the order to prepare for deportation with her children. When Varter returned, a neighbor noted that she appeared to be practically naked. She attempted to hide out in a well with her children so that they could have water. An Arab man came by and helped Varter out of the well, saying that they could both help her children out after she was rescued. Instead of helping her, the man decided to kidnap Varter, leaving her children behind to die in the well. This haunting story is confirmed through the last remaining...

They are currently based in Soho Square, London, Regulating the UK only and have a requirement to classify videos, and DVDs as well as some video games under the Video Recordings Act (1984), acknowledging and reflecting the UK's diverse cultural society. Originally set up in 1912 in order to put together rules and judgement on censorship, the British Board of Film Classification was known as the British Board of Film Censors until 1985. The BBFC then changed their name for the reason that they wanted to be known for the much larger role of actual classification that went into the boards work, rather than censorship, also applying the test of 'suitability for viewing in the home'. In the case of films shown in cinemas, local authorities have the final legal authorisation over who can view a particular film. The majority of the time, legal authorities accepts the Board's recommendation for a certificate for a film. Although there have been some exceptions, particularly in the 1970's when the board allowed films such as The Last Tango In Paris and The Exorcist to be released with an X certificate (18+), but many local authorities chose to ban the films regardless. The BBFC is a non-profit, non-governmental organisation, and its fees are adjusted only to cover its costs. In order to preserve its independence, the BBFC never receives subsidies from either the film industry or the government. In order to preserve its...

These films are often unsettling and rely on scaring the audience through a portrayal of their worst fears and nightmares. Horror films usually center on the arrival of an evil force, person, or event. Horror film may become as an adventures to some people. This is because the film may play with the viewer emotions. A Psychoanalytic Approach to "The Yellow Wallpaper"

...“pioneering masterpiece of feminist literature” (Pompele 61). Since the publication, theorists using a Feminist approach most overwhelmingly study the story.Gilman’s emphasis on the importance of language and text, and the fact that “The Yellow Wallpaper” is a tale of mental breakdown, make Lacanian psychoanalytic a natural way to consider the work in order to help readers understand the author’s use of language as a manifestation not of herself but the “other” as a means to safely express herself. As an autobiographical story there exist very undeniable connections between Gilman’s personal life and that of the narrator. A study of “The Yellow Wallpaper” is quite remiss if not offering some of the parallels between the author and the narrator as note of interest. In his dissertation, Pompele approaches the work as an “asylum trauma narrative in which the author gives witness to the personal horror of her own captivity in psychiatric spaces and the forced treatment she had to endure there” (60). At 24, Gilman became terribly weak and depressed. She quickly turned...

Film Comparison

...Film Comparison The power and intrigue of a story is determined by the subject matter, and how that subject matter is presented. People who make films have the freedom to manipulate any story, or subject matter. Films which portray real historical, and personal events need to be viewed with the understanding that the form of the film needs to coincide with the content in order for it to be credible. The film Tarnation is a documentary film about a man’s life. John Caouette combines hours of filmed footage from his life. Home movies, photographs from before he was born, answering machine tapes, snippets of short films, and 1980’s pop culture come together to create a fast paced, unsettling, tragic, and dramatic story. This part documentary, part narrative tells the story of his life, and how every aspect of it was affected by the mental instability that his mother experienced from a very young age. Tarnation deals with the themes of family, rape, child abuse, drug addiction, promiscuity, abandonment, and psychosis. The form of the film takes on a very dramatic, and anxious feel. A lot of the footage is shown in fast and short clips. There are times when videos cut in and out at a speed that relates to which part of John’s life is being portrayed. This diary in the form of a movie is raw and emotional. The chaos, and aggressiveness is portrayed not only through the events in John’s life, but the form of the film. The editing of the footage shown in this movie...

Motherly Love

...Motherly Love In Toni Morrison’s novel Beloved the mother-daughter cycle of perceived abandonment, betrayal, and recovery is played out through Sethe and her relationships with her mother and daughters. Sethe's past is one of pain and betrayal in which she was deprived of a loving mother and mistreated as a slave on the plantation known as Sweet Home. Her agonizing past precipitates her overbearing desire to love and protect her children in the present. Unwilling to relinquish her children to the physical, emotional, and spiritual trauma that she endured as a slave, she tries to murder them in an act that is, in her mind, one of motherly love and protection. Sethe, however, does not understand that her swift decision is conveyed as selfish and overbearing in the minds of her family and community, suggesting that her maternal instincts were poorly communicated to the people around her. The ghost of Beloved (Sethe’s murdered daughter) haunts her until her living daughter, Denver, assumes a maternal role of protection and love. Morrison uses the haunting past of slavery to reveal that Sethe’s scarring experience with personal abandonment may be the reason she cannot fully communicate with her daughters and correctly assume the maternal role in her family. The inability for parents to effectively nurture their children first occurs in Sethe’s life when she realizes that her own mother may have abandoned her on the slave plantation. She remembers that her own mother was hanged...

The Fire Next Time/My Dungeon Shook

... It is a personal perspective in the experience of being a Negro in that time. My Dungeon Shook is a letter addressed to the author’s nephew, named after him, written in the one hundredth anniversary of the emancipation, in which he tries to enlighten his nephew in order to keep him from following his father’s footsteps. He numbered the reasons why the white men have such closed perspective about inter racial relations and insists that it’s the Negros who must accept them and accept them with love because they are just confused and do not understand. He believes that the white men are innocent people with no hope, trapped in lies. He thinks they are like younger brothers to African Americans and therefore they shall force them to see themselves as they are. I am amazed of the way of thinking of this man. Instead of inciting fighting or protesting, which are in their every right after all African American people had been through, he rather put himself in the white men position. He has an almost Jesus Christ philosophy of love and acceptance and sees the white men as lost young brothers of the Negros and has the urge to guide them back the right path. He also points that African American are almost as guilty as the white men for following the standards they put them and live the lives that they set them to. Pretty amazing if you ask me. I think I would have never led myself to this ways. It’s easy to blame others especially if they took you by force from your home, enslaved...

20th Century Literature

...century and illustrate these characteristics using the texts studied in class. Okay let’s start with William Butler Yeats, who was not only the main figure in the Irish literary renaissance but also the twentieth century’s greatest poet in the English language. Yeats constantly uses allusive imagery and large symbolic structures. Yeats adopted a cyclical model of history which he created a private mythology that allowed him to come to terms with both cultural and personal pain. This model also helped explain the symptoms of the Western civilization’s declining spiral; the plight of contemporary Irish society and the chaos of European culture around World War 1. Yeats shares with writers like Rilke and T. S. Eliot the quest for larger meaning in a time of trouble and the use of symbolic language to give verbal form to that quest. For many years it is Yeats’s mastery of images that defines his work. From his early use of symbols as private keys, or dramatic metaphors for complex personal emotions, to the immense cosmology of his last work, he continued to create a highly visual poetry whose power derives from the dramatic interweaving of specific images. One of his poems called When You Are Old pleads his love for the beautiful actress and Irish nationalist Maud Gonne, whom he met in 1889 and who repeatedly refused to marry him. From the love poems of his youth to his old age, when The Circus Animals’ Desertion describes her as prey to fanaticism...

Hamlet

...are over compassionate ties and misleading love associations. Between these two stories the true dimensions portrayed of love are both ordinary and extreme. Once reading these books a reader can conclude that love itself can make you do some crazy things. “A rose for Emily” is a fictional analysis of horror or gothic tales between an over protective father, a psychotic spoiled daddy’s girl, and her lover. The relationship shown here between the girl and her father can be perceived as a typical father-daughter scenario played into today’s society. As most fathers, Emily’s dad never saw anyone up to his standards for his beloved daughter. With this being said Emily was never allowed to date or find a man’s love beyond her father’s. This put her in a distressful emotional state when she had to come to terms with her father passing away. Emily was an extremely over-bearing individual when it came to love. Her family and father had always been highly overrated people. They looked at other human-beings who did not fit their upbringings as “outsiders” and below them. In this narrative, the citizens of the town which Emily resides in are very judgmental when it comes to her personal life. Once her father died a new man came into her life named Homer. Homer was Emily’s lover and friend whom she fell madly in love with after her father’s death. He is a foreman from the North said to be tall with a dark complexion, with a booming voice, and light colored eyes. He was a beloved man...
