Personal Narrative: The Ice Trailer

Every once in a while you have a day that starts out bad and doesn’t change. Oh, things could get worst and in some cases catastrophic, but today was just plain bad. I woke up late because there must have been a power outage because the clock at my bed was flashing twelve. Normally, clocks had batteries that keep it from losing the correct time. Unfortunately, I had taken it out the battery the night before because the TV remote had died and I was too tired to go to the kitchen to get a new one. Then there was the shower. I was late and that wasn’t going to change and the department store I work at did have showers, but I was not going to get on a bus after I realized that the air conditioner control had also reset. Unlike the clock showing a flashing twelve o’clock, the AC switched from cool to hot. Yes I woke up in a furnace in the summer with no windows open and covered in sweat from head to toe. I was not going to take the chance for some single, available, and didn’t need dark lighting to be around man to have the wrong first impressions. Oh, but the water heater had automatically shut off. Cold water was one thing, but going from a furnace to an ice shower is a …show more content…
Of course, this gave her the perfect excuse to make my day a living hell. After I brought out the new stock to fill the shelves next came the tables with that week's sale items. Folded up the entire sale items that people look through then neglectfully tossed back on the pile was always special. Going in the changing rooms to collect all the items that are left behind and return them where they belong and finally the bottom of the barrow (short of restocking the ladies room and tossing out the feminine products trash can). The worst place to work in the entire store is the merchandise return

Transmedia Storytelling and Game of Thrones

...tradition of J. R. R. Tolkien. George R. R. Martin not only shares the initials with the author of The Lord of the Rings, but with A Song of Ice and Fire, has created a series of books that received enthusiastic reviews from critics and readers all over the world, nominating him the unofficial title of ―American Tolkien‖ [9]. In 2007 Martin agreed to collaborate with cable network HBO‘s writer-producers David Banioff and Daniel B. Weiss on the adaptation of his epic novel series to TV under the name Game of Thrones (GoT) [14]. Its narrative features the medieval fantasy world of Westeros, in which five noble families struggle to seize the all governing Iron Throne, and, with a complete broadcast of three seasons, the result has led TV critics to hail the show as one of the pinnacles of quality television narrative [21]. The show has also obtained an exceptionally broad and international fandom. The series has won numerous awards and nominations. It is the most recent big-budget media franchise to have contributed to the popularity of epic fantasy genre in mainstream TV. This essay will analyze the transmedia storytelling strategies applied to promote the TV series Game of Thrones. Transmedia storytelling is understood as a story told throughout numerous media platforms, with special content pointing back to the main narrative, working as a potential new audience entry-point. ―In which way transmedia storytelling is involved in Game of Thrones commercial success?‖...

...the house is fully decorated and furnished, but without clutter. I am immediately offered coffee and cinnamon toast. I begin by asking Tim to tell me his life story in his own words. Tim was born in 1946, the first year of the baby boomers, in Newport, Rhode Island. He was raised in a Catholic family that instilled core values in his life. Tim and his wife Lynn have six children and several grandchildren. There are pictures of family on many walls of the house. In his life he has served in the military during Vietnam, graduated from college, had a successful career, and even raised a family. As he begins, my pen is moving, and it hardly stops for the next hour and a half. Cultural Identity "Identity, or a sense of persistent personal selfhood within a larger web of social connections, was first recognized by personality theorists as a critical feature of adolescence. However, recent research has shown that identity is often an important issue in midlife, perhaps because it may be challenged, revised, and/or affirmed or strengthened and consolidated in the period" (Stewart, Ostrove, & Helson, 2001;...

...‘ THE BUSINESS OF MASS MEDIA Advertising and Commercial Culture 345 Early Developments in American Advertising 351 The Shape of U.S. Advertising Today 359 Persuasive Techniques in Contemporary Advertising 366 Commercial Speech and Regulating Advertising 374 Advertising, Politics, and Democracy Back in 1993, the trade magazine Adweek wrote about “The Ultimate Network”— something called the Internet: “Advertisers and agencies take note: It has the potential to become the next great mass/personal medium.”1 The prediction was correct, if not understated. The Internet has become a huge medium for advertisers, targeting audiences more precisely than any medium before it. Yet, none of the venerable ad agencies at that time could have guessed that an Internet start-up—Google— would become bigger than the leading multinational advertising holding companies like Omnicom, WPP, Interpublic, and Publicis. Nearly 99 percent of Google’s $16.6 billion revenue in 2007 came from advertising. THE BUSINESS OF MASS MEDIA B 343 ‘ ADVERTISING However, Google is different from the Madison Avenue agencies. It doesn’t design witty, slick ad campaigns. Instead, it facilitates the dull but effective text-based sponsored links that appear in Google searches or on affiliated sites. “We are in the really boring part of the business…the boring big business,” Google’s CEO Eric Schmidt says.2 What Google’s ads lack in creativity, they make up in precision. Google’s AdWords advertising...

...C h a p t e r 1 Prewriting GETTING STARTED (OR SOUP-CAN LABELS CAN BE FASCINATING) For many writers, getting started is the hardest part. You may have noticed that when it is time to begin a writing assignment, you suddenly develop an enormous desire to straighten your books, water your plants, or sharpen your pencils for the fifth time. If this situation sounds familiar, you may find it reassuring to know that many professionals undergo these same strange compulsions before they begin writing. Jean Kerr, author of Please Don’t Eat the Daisies, admits that she often finds herself in the kitchen reading soup-can labels—or anything—in order to prolong the moments before taking pen in hand. John C. Calhoun, vice president under Andrew Jackson, insisted he had to plow his fields before he could write, and Joseph Conrad, author of Lord Jim and other novels, is said to have cried on occasion from the sheer dread of sitting down to compose his stories. To spare you as much hand-wringing as possible, this chapter presents some practical suggestions on how to begin writing your short essay. Although all writers must find the methods that work best for them, you may find some of the following ideas helpful. But no matter how you actually begin putting words on paper, it is absolutely essential to maintain two basic ideas concerning your writing task. Before you write a single sentence, you should always remind yourself that 1. You have some valuable ideas to tell your reader,...
