“Strike three, you’re out!” yelled my coach as the ball whipped past the plate. It was the last day of Softball tryouts my sophomore year, and I had struck out at every at bat. I walked back to the dugout with a feeling of complete disappointment, dragging my bat along the dirt. Like my Papa always said, “failure is the first step to success.” I kept wishing he was there with me in that moment to tell me all of the things that kept me motivated and helped me know what to do in these situations. He always tells me that taking advantages of the positive aspects of failure can be beneficial to later accomplishments. In fact, most Juniors didn’t even make the team. There were a lot of seniors that season and not much space on the team for anyone else. When I learned that I was placed on the junior varsity team for a second year, this was a massive frustration for me. I had worked so hard in the past year, making softball one of my biggest priorities in an attempt to improve my skills. I thought this would be enough to get me onto the varsity team, so when I found out I was put on the junior varsity team I was mad at myself at first, wondering what more I could have done.
