...It was early morning, my eyes were squinted open as I looked at my bright phone screen. I was feeling excited and nervous at the fact of getting a horse. I got up out of my warm bed and got into the shower, my mind filled with thoughts about what is going to happen. I got ready to go, then we were on the way. I couldn’t wait to see what this exciting day would consist of. I rode with my sister to the the little town of Volga, Iowa. We had a heavy trailer attached to our back end. My sister’s horse, Buddy, was in the trailer because she was planning on trading him for another horse. It was a long, bumpy ride. Every stop sign you could feel the heavy trailer tug behind us. You could feel the car wobble as the horse would move. We finally arrived at the amazing Katy’s Corral. The first thing I saw was a beautiful brown horse. He was built nice, tall, and had a good personality. I knew I would love to own that horse from the start. You could smell the aroma of horse and their odor. I loved that smell. There were...

... Every once in a while you have a day that starts out bad and doesn’t change. Oh, things could get worst and in some cases catastrophic, but today was just plain bad. I woke up late because there must have been a power outage because the clock at my bed was flashing twelve. Normally, clocks had batteries that keep it from losing the correct time. Unfortunately, I had taken it out the battery the night before because the TV remote had died and I was too tired to go to the kitchen to get a new one. Then there was the shower. I was late and that wasn’t going to change and the department store I work at did have showers, but I was not going to get on a bus after I realized that the air conditioner control had also reset. Unlike the clock showing a flashing twelve o’clock, the AC switched from cool to hot. Yes I woke up in a furnace in the summer with no windows open and covered in sweat from head to toe. I was not going to take the chance for some single, available, and didn’t need dark lighting to be around man to have the wrong first impressions. Oh, but the water heater had automatically shut off. Cold water was one thing, but going from a furnace to an ice shower is a drastic change that no one should ever have to suffer. I didn’t have to imagine what my poor neighbors must have thought was going on with the sounds that I was making. Unfortunately, they didn’t come because I had a man who was available to give me that kind of attention. Once I was out of the shower...

...alternative filmsMainstream films can best be defined as commercial films that are made by major entertainment studios or companies that are owned by international media conglomerates. Because of better financing, these films can afford more expensive actors, wide releases, and are sold at popular retail stores. This has become known as the studio system. Films made by major studios or companies that are not owned by a media conglomerate but are distributed by a company owned by a media conglomerate (see Lucasfilm) are also considered to be mainstream and are often referred to as mainstream independent films. Companies that are completely independent, such as Lionsgate, also produce mainstream films, from a cultural standpoint, but independent of the studio system. The alternative to mainstream films are sub genre films that appeal to a certain audience, such as African American films. Low budget films, art films, and experimental films are often the starting point for entertainers who wish to enter into the mainstream circuit or a sub genre circuit. Mainstream films are targeted for all cultures and audiences, with the dominating culture and audience being the primary marketing focus, while sub genre films are marketed towards only one specific culture and audience. Mainstream films often recruit talent from all film genres and backgrounds. Alternative media are media (newspapers, radio, television, magazines, movies, Internet, etc.) which provide alternative information to the...

Description of Law and order In the criminal justice system, sexually based offenses such as rape, torture, pedophilia and child-abuse are dealt with in New York City, by a special unit of detectives of the police department known as the Special Victims Unit. These crimes are then passed on to the courtroom for prosecution. Law and order is a crime-based drama, with a mixture of ‘court-room’ and ‘detective’, TV series, mainly shown on channel five. By reading the description of the show, I immediately realised that this is a show that is based around the world of crime and how the crime is dealt with within the city of New York. It starts from finding who the criminal is and then we follow the story up to the prosecution in the court room. Words such as ‘courtroom, ‘rape’, ‘victim’, ‘detective’ immediately grabs the reader’s attention, giving us the impression of the type of genre this TV series is. The picture that accompanies the description also shows that the genre of this series is crime as the main detective is pulling out her police badge and is what the...

...shoes of the working class and embody their way of life. She accomplishes this by working typical jobs such as waitressing and housecleaning and attempting to survive with the meager wages the jobs paid. She does this experiment to shed light and bring attention on how people in America are able live on minimum wage. Throughout her narrative, she uses vivid and specific details to evoke an emotional response and connects with the reader on a personal level. She wants to show the world how working-class people are living an unfortunate life. After her reading, I believe working-class employees are entitled to more financial attention. Working-class people can be defined as people who usually work either one job, or perhaps two jobs to maintain their livelihood. The working class usually lives pay check to paycheck. Majority of the time they are not going to school, but working full time. Some blue-collar jobs include waitressing, housecleaning, and retail sales. Some duties include washing dishes or serving food to customers. They work being paid the national minimum wage. They do not have a decent home but live in an apartment or in a trailer. Ehrenreich’s experiment consists of many changes to her lifestyle. The first and most important change for Barbara is leaving her comfortable lifestyle behind and diving into a different world from what she is not used to. She finds two jobs, being a waitress at...

...The Ambiguity of Weeping. Baroque and Mannerist Discourses in Haynes’ Far from Heaven and Sirk’s All That Heaven Allows. Jack Post Abstract Although Douglas Sirk’ All That Heaven Allows (1954) and Todd Haynes’ Far from Heaven (2002) are both characterized as melodramas, they address their spectators differently. The divergent (emotional) reactions towards both films are the effect of different rhetorical strategies: the first can be seen a typical example of baroque discourse and the latter as a specimen of mannerist discourse. The reference to the terms melodrama, mannerism and baroque does not imply that these films are just formal repetitions of historical periods or that they thematically and structurally refer to historical styles, but that they are characterized by opposing discursive strategies which came to the foreground in a specific historical time and constellation. Because these discursive strategies return in other historical periods and socialpolitical circumstances in different guises and with different aims, they can be compared to what Aby Warburg calls Pathosformeln (pathos formula). The expressive forms, gestures and discursive modes of melodrama, baroque and mannerism can thus be understood as transhistorical (gestural) languages of pathos that recur in history. Résumé Bien que All that heaven allows (1954) par Douglas Sirk et Far from heaven (2002) par Todd Haynes se caractérisent nettement comme un mélodrame, les deux films adressent...

...enthusiastic reviews from critics and readers all over the world, nominating him the unofficial title of ―American Tolkien‖ [9]. In 2007 Martin agreed to collaborate with cable network HBO‘s writer-producers David Banioff and Daniel B. Weiss on the adaptation of his epic novel series to TV under the name Game of Thrones (GoT) [14]. Its narrative features the medieval fantasy world of Westeros, in which five noble families struggle to seize the all governing Iron Throne, and, with a complete broadcast of three seasons, the result has led TV critics to hail the show as one of the pinnacles of quality television narrative [21]. The show has also obtained an exceptionally broad and international fandom. The series has won numerous awards and nominations. It is the most recent big-budget media franchise to have contributed to the popularity of epic fantasy genre in mainstream TV. This essay will analyze the transmedia storytelling strategies applied to promote the TV series Game of Thrones. Transmedia storytelling is understood as a story told throughout numerous media platforms, with special content pointing back to the main narrative, working as a potential new audience entry-point. ―In which way transmedia storytelling is involved in Game of Thrones commercial success?‖ is the research question proposed. To answer this question, I intend to refer to the concepts of paratexts in relation to core text, as it is essential for transmedia storytelling. It is worth mentioning...

...Postmodernism is dead A new exhibition signals the end of postmodernism. But what was it? And what comes next? by Edward Docx / July 20, 2011 / Leave a comment Published in August 2011 issue of Prospect Magazine I have some good news—kick back, relax, enjoy the rest of the summer, stop worrying about where your life is and isn’t heading. What news? Well, on 24th September, we can officially and definitively declare that postmodernism is dead. Finished. History. A difficult period in human thought over and done with. How do I know this? Because that is the date when the Victoria and Albert Museum opens what it calls “the first comprehensive retrospective” in the world: “Postmodernism—Style and Subversion 1970-1990.” Wait, I hear you cry. How do they know? And what was it? Postmodernism—I didn’t understand it. I never understood it. How can it be over? You are not alone. If there’s one word that confuses, upsets, angers, beleaguers, exhausts and contaminates us all, then it is postmodernism. And yet, properly understood, postmodernism is playful, intelligent, funny and fascinating. From Grace Jones to Lady Gaga, from Andy Warhol to Gilbert and George, from Paul Auster to David Foster Wallace, its influence has been everywhere and continues. It has been the dominant idea of our age. So what was it? Well, the best way to begin to understand postmodernism is with reference to what went before: modernism. Unlike, say, the Enlightenment or Romanticism, postmodernism (even as...

...Personal Narrative My senior year of High School, I had my mind set on where I was going to college: The Art Institute in Dallas to be a fashion designer. Everyone told me not to go, that I wouldn’t make it a month and wouldn’t be long before I was back home. I was determined to prove my family wrong. My parents and I took a trip to Dallas for a campus tour. I loved every minute of the tour, but on the way home my mom told me that if I wanted to go to school there, I would have to raise the money on my own. After I graduated, I decided to take some side courses like Art and Photography while working to raise the money. Because I was unsure of which career path I wanted to study in school, after two years of working for my family company, they decided it was time for me to look for a job and stop pursing school. At the age of 20 I started working for Cato’s a women’s clothing company, about a year into working there I was named first assistant and no longer thought about going to school or raising the money to go. Just being stuck in a dead end job for the rest of my life. I started drinking and not caring about anything or anyone. This attitude went on for about a year and half, until one Sunday morning my pastor was talking about starting your life over no matter how deep you were. In the middle of the service I realized what I was doing and that I was not only hurting myself, but everyone around me and that I need to stop. I ran out of the service crying. Jenni the pastor’s...

...Question 1 Why have American films been so successful over the last half century? Outline what you consider to be key success factors for a film (type of story and genre; actors; directors, pace, music, and so on). Was the fascination for the American culture and way of life the prominent reason for that success? What was the contribution of the American melting pot with its huge diversity of migrants’ origins to the creativity and global outlook of the American movie industry? There are several reasons for the success of American movies: the budget, the Hollywood brand, the directors and the universal themes that appeal to a broad public. When the production can cover most of its costs by the local profit, it allows for a relatively low selling price to the foreign distributors. A large budget also makes it possible to use expensive actors with a recognized name that attracts visitors, as well as developing an efficient distribution system. The US has the most prominent country-brand equity in the world, which has without a doubt contributed to the Hollywood success. Therefore one might say that the fascination for American culture has helped their movie industry, but there are too many other factors to say that this is the main reason for its success. Several of the well renowned Hollywood directors have origins outside of the US. This knowledge of more than one culture might have contributed to a more international touch to their films, appealing to many different cultures...
