My personal philosophy of advising comes from three sources; my previous Program Coordinator positions, my academic experiences and from being an English as a Second Language instructor.
My academic experiences serve as an important framework that better allows me to understand and identify with a diverse range of students. My experiences of being a first-generation college student with English as a second language present the main ideals that are the backbone of my educational philosophy.
As an academic advisor my primary mission is to help students navigate successfully through their academic careers while exploring their educational and career options. My immediate responsibility is to prepare students to be self-sufficient and life-long learners. My obligation is to contribute and remain attentive to issues pertaining to student services and retention. This is especially important when addressing the needs of underrepresented and underserved students.
The use of a wide range of advising technique is essential to engaging students of diverse backgrounds. In today’s academic environment, the concept of “traditional” student is virtually outdated. What we once understood as a “standard” type of student is replaced by a student body consisting of individuals of all types of …show more content…
If a student do not feel comfortable with me as an advisor, then I am less likely to be able to support the student. I treat students as individuals; I learn their names quickly, and provide flexible office hours. This enables me to better interact with students on a personal level, and to accommodate their individual learning styles. There is a tendency to listen to and follow through on what someone says if there is trust. I also try to make my office a comfortable environment that is conducive to relaxation and the encouragement of candid conversation. ...My road to learning of how to read and hearing any rhymes was not the same as the usual child born here. My parents are of Hispanic heritage, and they spoke to me in Spanish mainly making that be my first language. I was homeschooled for my pre-school year, so I had someone come and teach me how to read and learn songs in Spanish. This way was not as difficult for me to grasp for I had already knew some words on how to say, since my parents already told me those words. My very first memory of the book that I first read was on “If you give a Mouse a Cookie.” This book was taught to me in Spanish, but I remember it clearly for teacher at the time brought a stuffed mouse and cookies to help me understand the story better. My teacher made me have physical examples of the story making me not feel it is a difficult book to read. However, once I entered a public school, they immediately made me learn English right away which was a challenge for me since it was a small child learning a whole new language all over again. The very first song in English was the “Wheels on the Bus.” I had to learn this song since as a class we were going to go on a field trip to a farm, and we sang this song on the ride there. This was exciting for me because I could see what exactly we were singing about which made it easier to remember.
