...challenge for me because it was a major course full of gifted and experienced analytical peers. I was rewarded for the struggles in the course with tremendous growth as a writer. As I present in the final paper included in this portfolio, I left that course organizing complex arguments clearly using very intentional language. The course forced me to reach my new levels of communication by the nature of the material covered. Faulkner writes with cryptically obtuse storylines that carry numerous levels of meaning. To present the themes he develops in his novels, I had to use clear direct language to overcome the ambiguity of the text. I had to use precise diction to correctly identify the literary features he employed while creating a greater essay structure that could organize the ideas I was...

...My road to learning of how to read and hearing any rhymes was not the same as the usual child born here. My parents are of Hispanic heritage, and they spoke to me in Spanish mainly making that be my first language. I was homeschooled for my pre-school year, so I had someone come and teach me how to read and learn songs in Spanish. This way was not as difficult for me to grasp for I had already knew some words on how to say, since my parents already told me those words. My very first memory of the book that I first read was on “If you give a Mouse a Cookie.” This book was taught to me in Spanish, but I remember it clearly for teacher at the time brought a stuffed mouse and cookies to help me understand the story better. My teacher made me have physical examples of the story making me not feel it is a difficult book to read. However, once I entered a public school, they immediately made me learn English right away which was a challenge for me since it was a small child learning a whole new language all over again. The very first song in English was the “Wheels on the Bus.” I had to learn this song since as a class we were going to go on a field trip to a farm, and we sang this song on the ride there. This was exciting for me because I could see what exactly we were singing about which made it easier to remember. Examples like these made learning a new language easy for me to comprehend since I did not find any difficulty to recall the story or song. These early experiences from...

...I am seeking to transfer to William and Mary because since I have decided I was going to take school seriously I have aimed at attending William and Mary. I had always have had a respect for the ocean and ever since I was a child I had had dreamed of becoming a marine biologist. During my time in high school, I had not fully applied myself and did not make the grades to go to college right away. I have attempted to really make up for this by becoming active in the academic and scientific community. I have found a new appreciation for learning and really have discovered a passion for pursing knowledge. I started really applying myself in school, and I even began seeking to gain hands on expiernece outside of the class room. The first semester of college I started volunteering at the Virginia Institute of Marine Science. I’ve remained volunteering at VIMS and I have gained quite a wealth of experience and knowledge. I’ve also greatly enjoyed my time at VIMS because I truly do enjoy science. I was able to do hands on science and learn about how research in the field is conducted. After my first full semester in the fall, I then set my goal to attend the College of William and Mary. By this point I had also found my true passion for physics, and I immediately focused my efforts to catching up in school. After my first semester of physics I was confident that I was making the right descion by perusing a degree in that feild. I then also began volunteering at the planetarium at the...

...My personal philosophy of advising comes from three sources; my previous Program Coordinator positions, my academic experiences and from being an English as a Second Language instructor. My academic experiences serve as an important framework that better allows me to understand and identify with a diverse range of students. My experiences of being a first-generation college student with English as a second language present the main ideals that are the backbone of my educational philosophy. As an academic advisor my primary mission is to help students navigate successfully through their academic careers while exploring their educational and career options. My immediate responsibility is to prepare students to be self-sufficient and life-long learners. My obligation is to contribute and remain attentive to issues pertaining to student services and retention. This is especially important when addressing the needs of underrepresented and underserved students. The use of a wide range of advising technique is essential to engaging students of diverse backgrounds. In today’s academic environment, the concept of “traditional” student is virtually outdated. What we once understood as a “standard” type of student is replaced by a student body consisting of individuals of all types of...

...I attend a volunteer youth organisation which represents the Royal air force called Air Training Corps (Royal Air Force Air Cadets) my squadron is 1846 Southall squadron. I go there every Monday and Thursday from 7:10PM to 9:35PM but they ask people to be their early so the register is done fast. Do you agree with these timings? We learn different skills and activities to benefit and prepare us, on our future careers either in civilian life or on the military life. I started attending Air Cadets because I was bored and I didn’t like the extracurricular activities being provided by the school so I expanded my search to outside of school and I found many different volunteer youth organisation such as the Army Cadets, the Sea Cadets, the Marine Cadets, the St John’s Ambulance Cadets, there was also the Police Cadets but I registered myself in the Royal Air Force Air Cadets website and the Sea Cadets also I got someone to see if there was any places at the local Army Cadets units, but on the Wednesday 12th June of 2013 afternoon I got a unexpected phone call it was a recruiting staff member of an Air Training Corps local squadron asking if I wanted to join on the following Thursday. I have taken part in many different activities such as flying, shooting, parades, Duke of Edinburgh and Royal Air Force Walking and Road Marching Association. My first flying experience was on the 25 June 2014 and it was 40 minutes long in my opinion it felt longer because I am terrified of heights...

...Writing my MFD went well, I did not have to make any major revisions and, instead, was able to focus on the details of my work. I continued to condense areas of my writing, revised to make the content less repetitive, and made sure that the information presented was clear and direct. An easy revision I made was to my mapping paragraph; I made sure to address the general sections of my writing instead of addressing each paragraph. Another simple addition, adding a popular source, was made to fulfil the source requirements. I also added the personal narrative section, which was easy yet challenging at the same time. It was easy to write because I have numerous reason why I chose my topic, but that also made it difficult to choose the most significant...

...As a CCLS, it is important to tailor all interventions and services specifically to each family’s needs—there is not a typical family and it is unfair to assume so when entering any situation. In this scenario, a single mother has a 6 year-old child with T1DM, a 9 year-old, and an 11 year-old child. As the CCLS I am creating educational, support, and coping strategies for her and her family. Regardless of whether or not the single parent were a single father versus a single mother, I would never use biological sex, sexual orientation, or gender identity to determine the type of psychosocial care I would provide. We also know that fathers want to be as involved as mothers are in their children’s lives. Rather, I would use a family-centered care approach and take into account the parental coping style, level of involvement, comfort level, and education level to tailor my education, support, and coping strategy interventions. Taking the scenario stated above into account, I would assist the single mother and her children through specific programming involving education, support, and coping strategies. Educationally speaking, I would aim to include the entire family in regard to education of T1DM to make everyone feel involved and avoid mom trying to find childcare for her other children. I would want to include developmentally appropriate educational resources, such as Jerry the Bear, temporary tattoos (for reminding to rotate injection site), books, and carb counting games. Supportively...

...This experience of conducting an ergonomic recommendation for a faculty at Stockton has been an overall interesting experience. My teammates and I met beforehand to distribute the work evenly and plan out any questions that may overlap the occupational profile, OSHA, and JDA. Since my classmates and I have gotten to know each other, we became comfortable in each other’s presence. Thus, I was grateful this assignment provided me the opportunity to utilize the professional interviewing skills I have developed from previous occupational therapy practice skills courses. For instance, I was aware of nonverbal characteristics from both the participant and how I was presenting myself, such as smiling when we greeted each other. Our interview was semi-structured...

...Almost two years ago today I tore my ACL in a soccer game; I needed surgery and a year out of sports. I am a typical first child, conscientious and cautious. I had never experienced adversity before and I avoided any situations where I was not completely certain of the outcome. I felt helpless and lost. Looking back, I now realize that much of my self esteem came from my soccer achievements. I had failed, I had failed my parents, my coach, and most importantly myself. I cut myself off from my team and pretended that soccer was no longer important to me. Following my surgery I made great progress in recovery. After 6 months, I was looking for a test. My father suggested that we raise money for charity and walk the Northern Presidential Traverse...

...So, I typed my little fingers off and picked up a few grammatical textbooks along the way. Every essay my grades got a little better, maybe he was going easy on me but I’ll never know. Concluding the year, I had to do my senior research paper, which I chose the topic of “The Brain in Love.” Precisely 15 pages later, I passed in my paper and earned an A. I honestly don’t know who was more surprised, him or me—or my mom. Regardless, I proved that I was capable of producing great pieces of...

...I am quite delighted that my knee tore apart a year ago. Although it was very painful, my injury revealed tons of unique qualities that were unknown to myself. The road to recovery was not how I expected it to be. However, the decision made to persevere through the struggle took a whole-hearted effort. Injuries in life may be a major setback, still we have to persevere wholeheartedly. An injury may be blown at any moment, yet how I handled mine molded me into who I am. The injury that was blown at me was during the final game of the 2015 football season. At the last minutes of the game, along my 8th tackle of the night, my own teammate cleared my knee out without even knowing it. I can recall yelling and gazing into the dark Memphis skies trying to keep calm. I expected to return to the field soon regardless of my torn ligaments. Little did I know this was just the beginning of a blessing in disguise. The blessing in disguise, the torn Anterior Crucial Ligament in my knee, was scanned 3 months after the accident. My heart tore apart as I expected to be no more than a partial tear, yet it was fully torn. Immediately, I researched what I was going to endure for about a year. There were many obstacles to stumble upon such as the following: therapeutic exercises, what to consume, precautions, progression dates, pain levels, and even the surgery itself! In my mind, I desired the moment of returning back to sports to play for my team every minute. Even though Mom and Dad were not allowing...

...Anderson Cancer Association "You have cancer" are words that no one ever wants to have to hear. For the year, 2013 my community had 1057 new cases of cancer and 425 from cancer (Bolick 2014). In 2013 my community came together to create a local place for cancer patients, survivors, and their families known as the Anderson Cancer Association (ACA). The Anderson Cancer Association is important to me because I have seen firsthand how cancer affects the lives of others including my grandmother’s, know the organization’s revenue stays locally in Anderson, and have seen them cover the cost of items not covered by my grandmother’s insurance. Seeing firsthand how this organization works to better the lives of those in our community is amazing. I have always been active in planning events for the Anderson Cancer Association since I was in high school. My high school English teacher introduced me to the organization when our school was doing a fundraiser. I became dedicated to helping fight the fight. No matter what the needs of the patients or their families we did not mind sacrificing time because we all were making an enormous impact. The greatest part of it all was that it was made possible by our local community funding. I would see people that I knew come in for financial assistance, information on what to expect during treatments, or even just a simple hug and words of encouragement. I was always there doing my part supporting anyone who came in. I remember one of my local high...

...Climbing the steep slopes of Mt. Sneffels, one of 58 “14ers” in Colorado, I looked out on the vast beauty of the land. Down below, climbers continued up the treacherous path, my prohibited love was in that group. Across to the south, the San Juan mountains continued onward; my young childhood summers were spent there. To the northwest, I thought I could see the red rock of the Colorado National Monument; my home, where I discovered who I wanted to be, looked out upon it. To the north, I saw a city, wherein, my father lost sight of who he was, his career, and his dignity, and almost his life. And atop the great mountain, I felt the Higher Power. A God who has always been on my right and on my left, ready to bear me up in the difficulties of life. It was within the great landscape Colorado that I experienced all that I am and all that I hope to become, and not to become. This region has been extremely influential to the goals that I set, for the land itself reminds me of things greater than myself. It reminds me to set goals according to the needs of others and to the standards of God. Nonetheless, the people within this area remind me of goodwill, courage, and hard work everyday: to stand for what is right. These perspectives through the influence of the landscape and the people motivate me, develop me, and remind me of the power enduring hard things....

...could find evidence of the compassion with which healthcare is delivered as I observed the nurses’ empathetic relationship with their patients including a gentleman who would often awake startled but was always carefully put at ease. I took temperatures, blood pressures, cleaned down beds and learnt of vascular access points and the impacts of kidney failure on patients’ lives by talking with them. Arranging a week shadowing paediatricians at St. George’s Hospital then exposed me to the care of patients at the other end of the age bracket where as I attended handovers, teaching sessions and spent time in the more chaotic A&E; my insight to a doctor’s busy working schedule gave an inherent realisation of their commitment and sacrifice of personal time. As I followed the daily rounds of the infectious diseases ward, a head examination of a boy believed to be an injured refugee also led me to learn of the multidisciplinary teamwork between specialities such as ENT and neuroimaging to find diagnoses and treatments. Having gained glimpses into life on specialised hospital wards, I also undertook a placement at ‘The Town Surgery’, Enfield. As I observed the doctor’s unfaltering interest when tending to his patients needs; communicating on their level of understanding, I was clear of his deep motivation. Working at the reception also showed me the administrative commitment GPs require and exposed me to a breath of patient types as I came across both welcoming and challenging individuals...
