Personal responsibility is the willingness to both accept the importance of standards that society establishes for individual behavior and to make strenuous personal efforts to live by those standards. (Google’s Definition)
What are personal responsibilities and college success? To me personal responsibilities consist of being accountable for my everyday life and that of my children. My life at the moment consists of being a full time mother and working full time job while furthering my education so that I will be able to better provide for my children. Personal responsibility is juggling home, work and school and being successful in all that I do. There are days it seems as though it is not possible, but as I look at what my parents taught me I find it gives me the strength to continue on in my career. I step back and look at the big picture and see where adjustments might need to be made and then take it one step at a time. Otherwise, it becomes very overwhelming. "Nonetheless, character – the willingness to accept responsibility for one's own life – is the source from which self-respect springs." ( Joan Didione 2010) For me, I have been able to achieve my goals by sticking with my program. I make sure that everyone’s schedule works together. I have had to make a few adjustments with my work schedule so that everything is more balanced.
I am able to get my school work done and still spend time with my family so that my children do not feel left out. It helps that I have the support of family and friends to help when I need help. "Parents can only give good advice or put them on the right paths, but the final forming of a person's character lies in their own hands."(Anne Frank) Personal responsibility and college go hand in hand. You need to be accountable for your actions. For example making sure everything done on time and I am not neglecting any of my duties as a parent, employee or student. All homework assignments are turned in, participating in class discussions and I am communicating with my professors. It is all in how you structure your day and set a schedule and stick to it. There are times things come up that I did not plan on, but instead of feeling defeated I make the necessary adjustments whether it is temporary or permanent. Life is all about change. Without the change, we do not grow. That is another reason I have chosen to continue my education. I needed to change my life to be able to better provide for my children. It will also help them to see the importance of an education.
My preliminary plan to practice personal responsibility in regards to my education is to dedicate time during the day while my children are in school to work on my own assignments. This will allow me time to do my assignments with no distractions and give me ample time to complete the tasks on schedule. I have multiple resources to help me thru my college classes and career. I have a very supportive family who will be there for me when I need them whether it is financially, emotionally, or just an ear to listen if I need to vent or talk about my school work.
I have taken several steps to help with my career competence. I have learned you need excellent communication skills and listening skills. I have noticed that it takes a very strong initiative and understanding of others to be a competent person in your career and life in general. I will also make use of my critical and analytical thinking skills to help me make ethical decisions while at work and in my life outside of work. I will try to not over think situations as I have in the past.
When you have to make moral decisions try not to let your emotions run with what needs to be done there is always others on the outside of your decision that can be hurt or look at you differently by your emotional decisions. When you are in a collaborative team you always need to be able to verbally express your opinions as well as being able to have listening skills. I believe have those qualities can make you into a strong leader in your collaborative teams. The goals I have set for myself consist of being able to provide for my family with no assistance from others in the next five years. I also would like to be able to have my own building and be a HUB manager in the next ten years.
With this being said I need to be able to follow my schedule so I can achieve these goals. For me, the only problem that could make this not happen is myself. I need to stay focused and in the right direction my keeping my grades up and staying on track. To make myself a stand up employee and a human being I need to set my Personal Responsibilities to the max. I need to uphold to all of my beliefs. Be able to think rationally and analytically in any situation that comes my way.

Personal Responsibility

...feel personal responsibilities and decisions don't have a huge impact on others, personal responsibility is vital in day to day life, team activity, and career development. From a very young age the concepts of sharing, respect, and kindness become instilled repetitively. The golden rule is one of the primary and most influential ways personal responsibility begins. “Do unto others, as you would have them do unto you” isn’t just something that works in kindergarten, it lasts a lifetime. These initial values that we instill into the youth of society are what will transcend into their adolescent lives as students, athletes, or members of an organization and ultimately their professional lives with career beginnings and development. When I think of personal responsibility, I think accountability. Personal responsibility is not just taking the credit when everything is going as planned, it is also finding the solution and helping others along the way when nothing is going as planned. Responsibility itself is something that can be divided into multiple concepts in itself. One of which Ann Allen goes on to split into centralized and decentralized. For a group setting, as members there is a sense of centralized responsibility. Each group member is responsible for contributing their part. At the same time, there is a sense of decentralized responsibility. Allen writes, “Decentralization allows for greater shared responsibility,” which is how group work happens (“Responsibility &...

...Personal Responsibility for College Success To succeed in college it’s important that students possess an attitude of personal responsibility. Unlike high school, in college no one tells a student when to go to class, when assignments are due or when to study for test. In college, students are expected to know these things on their own. Although personal responsibility might cause one to neglect teamwork, personal responsibility is needed to succeed in school because it allows a student to take charge over their own life and cultivates growth in all areas of their life Before one can accept such an attitude they must first understand what personal responsibility means. Personal responsibility means taking individual accountability for one’s own actions. In other words, it’s being able to take care of one’s own wellbeing without expecting or blaming others to do it for you. In school, it means turning in your work on time, studying for you tests and working effectively with your classmates. It also means you can’t blame your parents, kids, and work for not being able to do well in school. Some might argue that too much reliance on the self can cause you to neglect team work and important relationships. Some may want to help you in reaching your objectives especially group projects. When you have an attitude of I can do it by myself you leave out benefits of working with others who has different skills, knowledge, and ideas. You could avoid this by realizing your limitations...

Personal Responsibility

...Personal Responsibility: A Universal Principle of Success Over the course of my life, there have been many life lessons that have forced me to observe the importance and need for personal responsibility. From making sure I get out of bed on time, to ensuring that I make it to bed in time to wake up the next morning and start all over again, from one moment to the next, I am responsible not necessarily for what will happen, but for how I will work with what will happen along my relentless quest for the life I truly want for myself. While I feel I do not have control over the weather or any other natural phenomena, I find it interesting that some people indeed do take personal responsibility to such a level. Not pleasing the Heavens could mean terrible storms, sickness, pestilence, and death for many societies in the world, particularly in antiquity. For instance, the Ming Dynasty Emperors of China, staunch followers of Confucian philosophy self-examined themselves out of fear of the will of Heaven. Such a practice was so revered during the Ming Dynasty that it later became regarded as the root for cultivating moral character and living a pure life. To this day, millions truly believe this phenomenon to be true and continue to live in close adherence to such beliefs. I firmly believe that if I am not satisfied with the outcome of any given situation, I must simply change my responses to the outcome. All of life is simply a series of consequences to the responses...

...of Personal Responsibility for College Success Edward P. Cormier GEN/200 - Foundations For General Education And Professional Success December-3, 2012 Dr. Nicholas Konrad Langlie The Importance of Personal Responsibility for College Success From day one, the military instills a virtue of personal responsibility in its members. Failure is not an option for these warriors. They do what they need to do to overcome any obstacle in their way. To adapt and overcome is their battle cry. With flexibility being too rigid, they are as fluid as the oceans they patrol. This tenacity translates perfectly into academia. Even though unexpected events can affect ones plans, personal responsibility can lead to college success because staying focused on set goals increases their chances of reaching academic goals. According to Pater and Remmo (2012) “Personal responsibility (PR) is like the weather: There is a lot of talk about it, but little effective action. While many leaders want to imbue workers with this ethic, most don't know how to make it so. This gap is like an unacknowledged elephant in the safety culture room. If only all workers would watch out for themselves, not make excuses nor blame circumstances when something negative occurred, and adjust appropriately as conditions change rather than getting angry or pleading helplessness.” (p. 26). Anyone can discuss personal responsibility...

Personal Responsibility

...Personal Responsibility Although there are many things needed to succeed in college, personal responsibility is one of the most important ones. Personal responsibility means to be held accountable for a person’s own actions. The outcome of an individual’s decisions, whether good or bad, is solely his or her responsibility. Once a person accepts this, the accomplishment of goals previously set becomes easier to achieve. The Sequence of Personal Responsibility tells how when it comes to personal responsibility, not only do we have to willingly accept how important the standards established by society are, we also need to ensure we try our hardest to live by those standards. Additionally, when we fail to meet these standards, we can’t blame everyone or everything else for our failure (Haskins, 2009). Success in college will depend on, among other things, the person’s acceptance of personal responsibility. Students are given the proper tools to succeed. The end result will be in the individual’s hands. This is where a strong sense of personal responsibility will come in to play. There are many factors that will lead a person to succeed in college. Finding out what motivates the person is one. It can be the fact that the person wants a better job, or maybe the person likes their job but wants a promotion along with better pay. Another reason can be that one is seeking self improvement by obtaining a college degree, seeking a higher degree, or finishing a previously started degree...

...Personal Responsibility Stephen Helena Gen 200 07/11/13 Mr. Hutcherson Personal Responsibility Results that are good and bad are the byproduct of decisions made at critical junctions in time. The word accountability is one of those haunting words that looms when errant decisions find their way into moments of decision making weakness. Patterns of thought are what guide day to day decisions and help form productive habits. The development of positive patterns of thought will create mental momentum, not only in school, but in personal life as well. Personal responsibility, at this point, will become paramount. If priorities are firmly established and goals are set at the beginning of college enrollment, then this will considerably aid in the decision making process. Personal responsibility will be the pathway to college success because initiative, resourcefulness, and determination always end with positive results. Showing the initiative to begin the college process is a critical step in making progress in one’s life. Someone that never starts is someone that will never finish. The desire to have something more than the minimum to survive is innate in human nature. The insight to see a path to something more is vision. When desire and vision are combined with initiative, the currents of accomplishment begin to stir. Nothing will ever get accomplished without taking that first step. Without initiative, talent is a desert...

...Personal Responsibility Tim Sisson GEN 200 March 24, 2012 Virginia Mapes Personal Responsibility What is Personal Responsibility? Personal responsibility is defined by Merriam-Webster (2012), as: “Responsibility: the quality or state of being responsible; as moral, legal or mental accountability.” This definition can take on many annotations. It is my opinion in regards to this paper that Personal Responsibility is what makes up a person’s ‘moral fiber’. It is the ability to make decisions based on what a person feels is right or wrong. It is that little voice in the back of a person’s head that guides them when life presents choices and challenges. Those who possess Personal Responsibility tend to make wiser choices and decisions in life. These wiser decisions are made for the fact that they know that they will be held accountable for their actions. Personal Responsibility is the hallmark of success in all aspects of a person’s life. It is that individual who makes the wiser decisions in life that will tend to be more successful in life. Individuals have the choice to make right and wrong decisions in life. Galindo (2010) states “It is their morals, ethics, and personal responsibilities that guide them through life in their decision making process.” A persons ‘moral fiber’ is defined by how they make those decisions. Will the individual be responsible and make the right decision or will he possibly make an easier, less responsible choice? Is the thought...

Rockefeller Personal Responsibility is being responsible for your actions, forecasting all possible consequences and implications of those actions, along with taking care of your family and friends, being held accountable for your tasks, setting a number of reasonable objectives and developing a proper action plan to work towards achieving those objectives, being able to respond in a reasonable and adult like behavior to any unexpected event that might occurs. The connection between Personal Responsibilities and College Success is embedded deep within our day-to-day lives. As a student, it must be taken into consideration that a person's actions have consequences directly related to his/her future, which can be somewhat intimidating if we think about it. This is why people plan; planning can set a track for people to achieve their goals, the responsibility lies within the ability to follow the right track. Here is where the Time Monitor/Time Plan Process adds much needed value. For me, I have noticed some factors that affect my daily planning routine; I consider all of them personal responsibilities. ...Personal Responsibility In order to success at life, and to achieve our goals, personal responsibility is something we need in order to accomplish this. Personal responsibility, to me, is caring for my growing family and going back to school to in order to provide a better life for my family, a life I was not given. Going back to college and being successful at that is very important to me, because my family counts on me. They rely on me to provide for them, to nurture them, and to be an example to them. Juggling college, a career, and a family can be extremely stressful at times. There is not very much time in the day to work full time, spend time with my family, and go back to school. In order to be successful at all these things it takes a great deal of responsibility. I have to achieve the mind set of how important my career, family, and school are and set a schedule to give myself ample time to spend on all these things. I believe that going back to school can force me into taking the responsibility to be successful in college and give me the focus to set goals for my future. To achieve my goals I have to take the responsibility to set a schedule to allot time for work, school, and my home life. I work hard in my career to provide for my family and make sure my bills are paid on time and everyone is happy and healthy. ...Personal Responsibility Michael R. Henson Gen200 Week 5, Day 5 Norma Nikutowski Personal Responsibility Personal responsibility and college success should go hand in hand with one another. Being able to define personal responsibility and applying it to your college career can help build a solid foundation for success. Trying to achieve that success without a specific plan or goal can certainly lead to failure. The plan should be clear and well defined, like a road map that guides you in the right direction to achieving college success. Students enter school under a lot of stress, with the expectation of succeeding in school. Students have grades to worry about, financial concerns and what they will and won’t be able to do socially. From an early age most parents teach their children that getting an education will earn them more money each year that they earn more if they have Bachelor’s degree. Adding all of these together can send that stress level through the roof. Understanding how to prepare yourself for that change, developing your personal responsibility can help the student go far. (Murphy, n.d.) Personal responsibility can be defined in multiple ways by multiple people. According to "Answers.com" (2011), " Personal Responsibility is taking responsibility for your actions, accepting the consequences that come from those actions and understanding that what you do impacts those around you.” My definition is this: Holding your self-accountable when nobody...

...Personal Responsibility GEN/200 10/25/2012 Personal Responsibility To me personal responsibility means being accountable for your actions and taking responsibility for the outcome of your life. Proper time management, staying focused, disciplined and consistent are some of the qualities I consider when thinking about personal responsibility and its definition to me. As I go through life I have noticed that unsuccessful people can make up many different excuses for why they are not where they want to be in life or why they have not achieved the level of success they are capable of. On the other hand, when I speak to successful people the only real difference I notice is the fact that successful people do not make excuses for their selves or limit their success to their demographic or background. I plan to use these qualities time management, focus and consistency to help me complete my journey in achieving my bachelors here at the University of Phoenix. First and many would argue the most important factor to becoming a good student would be how you manage your time. Improper time management can lead to having to cram for test which is not a good way to learn in my opinion. It can also lead to turning in assignments late or incomplete thus leading to an unsatisfactory grade in your class. I believe proper time management especially for adult students is not only a personal responsibility but it becomes a whole family responsibility as well. Many of us have a spouse and children...

...Personal Responsibility: Curse or Blessing James Case GEN/200 March 12, 2012 Mary Griffin Personal Responsibility: Curse or Blessing Personal responsibility (PR) is a blessing and despite what a lot of people think, PR allows you freedom in life because with a high level of personal responsibility. (Lawson, 2011) When we acknowledge this, we will make choices in our life that will lend to us achieving the goals we set for ourselves, and will make the path to reaching those goals much more defined and with fewer obstacles. To me, personal responsibility means owning up to the actions you make in your life; good, bad, and indifferent. It also means that when acknowledged, we hold the key to our own “destiny” and we cannot rely on anyone other than ourselves to get to where we want to be in life. I put destiny in quotations because according to "Merriam-Webster.com" (2012), destiny is defined as “a predetermined course of events often held to be an irresistible power or agency”, and to me it cannot be predetermined if we hold our destiny in our own hands, our destiny can changes with every decision we make. There is a very distinct relationship between PR and success in college, most noticeably with the amount of effort a student puts into the courses they take. It is up to each student to make a conscience decision on how much effort they put in, and like most things; what you put in is what you get out. If a student chooses to wait until the last minute to complete...

...Personal Responsibility Essay Personal responsibility, particularly as it relates to study skills, is taking charge of one’s own learning, whether in a positive or negative manner. In doing so, students dictate the outcome of their actions, and they will accept the consequences of the final result. Personal Responsibility defines our personalities, and it makes the student better at decision making. It allows student to apply inward skills needed to succeed in making life decisions. After being honorable discharge from the military, I decided to continue my education so I could have more options for career opportunities. Being my first educational experience, it is my personal responsibility to adopt good study skills, maintain time management, and not procrastinate in doing my assignments. As a student, I must understand that without adopting these attributes, I will increase the risk of not succeeding in my class. In taking personal responsibility, a person needs to make mature decisions that will benefit their outcome. According to Haskins, when applied to education, personal responsibility means that students accept the responsibility to study hard and to learn as much as they can in courses that press against the limits of their capacity. For most students, this aspect of personal responsibility means that they must take courses that prepare them for college. Hard work is a must because the single most accurate predictor of college performance...

...Personal Responsibility by Stephen Bruce Foundations for General Education and Professional Success (Gen200) 04/15/2013 Dr. Annette Roter Although personal responsibility is a perception of ideas or standards established by society, personal success depends upon personal responsibility because it promotes accountability and also reflects on the accountability in our professional lives. Upholding personal responsibility is the key to success in any type of environment. It is the commitment to ourselves telling us to get out of bed to get ready for work or to go to class. On the other hand, personal responsibility is the acceptance of failure to accomplish the task that we are obligated to. As a college level student, we know that part of our responsibility is to read assigned materials, complete task on time and take part in classroom discussions at the very least. Failure to complete these tasks ultimately could result in dismissal from a chosen program and a delay educational goals. One strategy for overcoming the pressures of student life is time/self-management. At the college level the student is held accountable for his or her education. This means no excuses. It does not matter that the dog “ate your homework”. Had you made time to feed the dog he may not have chosen to eat the homework instead. Time management does not mean to give all your energy and focus to only working on school assignments. It simply means to designate time for completing these...
