Personal responsibility is doing what is meant to be done and fulfill the commitments that are already made. Personal responsibility makes an individual to be responsible for an individual’s own deeds and actions. It is a virtue and should apply to a person's thoughts, feelings, and actions. It is important to have personal responsibility because it helps you grow as a person. In learning to be more responsible, it is important to know life’s limitations. Kenneth Boulding (1972) describes in his journal article that everyone views responsibilities in their own way. That it is based on their behavior as to how one interprets what responsibilities are and what they are not. Boulding’s article states many different theories on responsibilities such as what morals they possess, what culture they have come from and what a person views as wrong and right. It does not matter how smart we are, there is only so much responsibility that a person can handle (p. 329). The relationship between personal responsibility and college success is tough when someone is new to the process. College success determines how personal responsibility plays out. There are factors, which includes determination and dedication that a person must exercise to achieve reachable goals. Applying these factors in one’s personal life will lead to a successful college education. The relationship of personal responsibility and college success closely mirrors one another. It is trying to find the balance between the two that makes it difficult at times, especially when this is the first course that I have taken online. My wife has gotten her graduate degree online and is currently working on another one. I am trying to learn from her how she balances graduate school and still able to do everything else. It will be a learning curve, but I know I will get there and know to ask for help. A preliminary plan to practice personal responsibility in education would be taking time each day to log in and see what assignments and discussions that one must participate in. I am new to the online process as I have had only classroom experience. So I am trying to find a balance between work, school, and family. I want to add as a new online student that the website is hard to navigate as I am getting confused where to find the course syllabus, and when assignments are due. I am finding help from other teammates who have done online courses before and that has helped in the learning process. I missed assignments the first week because I did not realize the time that they were due. This will be a process that I hope to catch on to more quickly than I have, but only time will tell. After reading Bertilli and Lynn (2003) article on managerial responsibility, I decided to start speaking to many construction managers in my current field. Although the article dealt with public administrators, the context can be related to the construction management field. Bertilli and Lynn (2003) state that although there may be conflict within management styles that is better to “strike a balance between competing interests, values, and interpretation of facts” (p.262). With this being said, I feel that it takes more than personal responsibility to manage a project such as implementing various operations through proper coordination and control of planning, design, estimating, contracting and construction in the entire process. It will be helpful in specifying project objectives, budgeting, scheduling, setting performance requirements, and selecting project contributors. With all these elements to think about, each one will have to be handled in a different way when dealing with different customers as everyone has different personalities. In doing so, you have to be accountable enough to know how to deal with those different personalities in order to become successful as with any job. Acknowledging that everyone has different ideas of what responsibility is and what it entails, that is when communication becomes key. Without good communication skills, you will never know what you are accountable for and what you are not. In Mostovicz, E. I., Kakabadse, A., & Kakabadse, N.K.(2011), their article aims more towards the oil fields, but the techniques they stress can be used in everyday management. They stress there are four essential pillars that must be met in order for a business to become successful which are ethics, leadership, personal responsibility and trust (pp. 491-494). All four of these pillars can be taken in different context, because each individual has their own opinion and standards of what each of these pillars stand for. Each person was raised within different cultures, religions, and moral standards. So it will be up to the individual to determine their moral compass of what is the right and wrong thing to do. It will be up to you to decide what those ethics are for the company you work for. Most companies have a mission statement. It represents what they represent as a company. It is very important to know a company’s values and what they focus on before taking a job with them. Because once you take on employment with that company, you are not only representing what they stand for, but reflect your values as well. In conclusion, there are many factors that take place when someone speaks about personal responsibility. By taking this class, it has opened my eyes to what matters to me, what type of manager I would like to become, and which companies I will be applying with once I graduate. The testing that we did throughout the class taught me what I need to work on, what I am good at, and what employment opportunities will be good for me. Also through the discussions with classmates, I see how everyone sees or interprets something different, that everyone has their own thoughts and ideas, and that everyone goes by their own moral compass. After researching personal responsibility, it has opened my eyes to other views of what personal responsibility means to me. It was a lesson well learned. References

...Personal Responsibility Essay Donald Upward GEN/200 January 15, 2014 Dan Barbara, MAEd Personal Responsibility Essay Personal responsibility is the necessity and willingness to complete tasks in a timely manner, and it is essential to achieving success in college. The key to this is exercising careful control over one’s time, finances, and health. There are benefits to engaging in responsible behavior along with negative consequences for engaging in irresponsible behavior. Two areas of improvement as a college student are procrastination avoidance and time management. Staying well ahead of deadlines is one effective strategy to help manage time. According to Hersh and Geary Schneider (2005), “Personal responsibility and social responsibility involve the moral obligation to both self and community, and both forms of responsibility rely upon such virtues as honesty, self-discipline, respect, loyalty, and compassion.” (p. 8) As far as the student experience is concerned, the three main factors of time, finances, and health govern personal responsibility. A deficiency of any of these will have a detrimental effect on the chances of success. If one does not put aside enough time or is constantly procrastinating, they will likely miss deadlines and consistently will turn in work that is lacking in refinement and detail. This can lead to the belief that just scraping by with barely adequate work is acceptable. Similarly, if one does not do what is necessary to...

It is important to take control of personal actions by having confidence and discipline. When remaining true to self and confident; the outcomes in life and college success become rewarding. Wikipedia defines personal responsibility as the idea that human beings choose, instigate, or otherwise cause their own actions. ...Personal Responsibility And College Success “The price of greatness is responsibility” (Winston Churchill). I believe this statement by Winston Churchill adequately describes the art to great success and high quality achievements. Personal responsibility is greatly intertwined with college success. The path to college success starts and ends with holding oneself responsible and accountable. Knowing one's strengths and weakness can assist one in navigating down that path of college success, leading to the achievement of the set out goals. It has been about ten years since I have been in college. Although I could look at this long drought as a disadvantage, after much thoughtfulness I have realized that in these last ten years I have gained much personal experience and a plethora of skills and attitudes that will only aid me in achieving the victory I not only desire but demand of myself. Personal responsibility means that I am solely responsible for establishing my own goals, pinpointing my strengths and weaknesses and holding myself accountable to a set standard and process that will ultimately accomplish those goals. ...Personal Responsibility Essay Gen 200 July 28, 2014 Personal Responsibility Essay “Being thoughtful and taking responsibility serves you well, as your accountability is one measure of your success. In our professional and personal lives, most of us typically take responsibility for our actions, words, and attitudes. An occasional “oops” can rapidly put us on a radar that we'd prefer not to be on, irrevocably annoy our student population, or cause a family rift.”  (Zavod, 2014) Personal responsibility is a choice we all have to face when deciding to do the things that will help our future or the lives of those in our care, like my personal responsibility to succeed at college to better support my family. For me, that “oops” could have drastic impacts on our family’s financial well-being. Each person has their own definition of personal responsibility determined by their own background. If one includes financial success in their definition of personal responsibility they need a plan in place for how to achieve financial success. Naturally, there is then a large correlation between personal responsibility, financial success, and the success one has in their education. Each person should have a plan to complete their education and how their own personal responsibility fits in with that goal. Merriam Webster says responsibility is “something that you should do because it is morally right” (Merriam-Webster, 2014). For me going back to school is a personal responsibility...

...Personal Responsibility Essay Juan Valdez GEN/200 April 23, 2014 Donna Cooper Personal Responsibility Essay Personal responsibility is a skill and learned behavior that can make or break a person’s success. The response of how one reacts to their own personal responsibility is a direct correlation of their happiness and achievements in life. People cannot be held responsible for experiences they are brought to, only the feelings and thoughts they express when faced with those circumstances. Having the discipline and understanding of responsibility not only helps a person get far in their college career, but also has many other benefits. When a student makes their own choices and decisions, they are open to learning from mistakes they have made. As the Author According to Hubbard (1856-1915) “The greatest mistake you can make in life is to be continually afraid you will make one” (p2). The college life is all about learning who you are and how you fit in the world. Without making mistakes, one will never truly know their full potential. Also, if students are constantly living by what others tell them to do, they are not given the benefit of learning why there was a certain result and how to change it when faced with a similar situation in the future. With learning and taking responsibility, a sense of trust is obtained from others around you. Knowing students are reliable and trustworthy comes from the way they react to situations. ...Personal Responsibility Essay Responsibility is the action taken to uphold you on a personal level to let yourself become a better person. Being responsible especially on a personal level is not an easy task as it also deals with ethics, morals and being dependable and the sort in a sense that is a responsibility in its self. My number one responsibility is being responsible for my actions and suffering the consequences if I do something wrong. In the same sense if I do what’s right I will reap the rewards so to say. Morals are normally taught in childhood or in a church setting. Basically it’s like the Bible says, “Whatsoever a man soweth that shall he also reap.” (KJV). In basic terms it is saying if you do good you will get good rewards; If you do bad works you will get bad things in return that’s why being responsible is so important. People need to be able to depend on you but if you’re not a very mature responsible person than whom are people going to trust. “Personal responsibility is the willingness to both accept the importance of standards that society establishes for individual behavior and to make strenuous personal efforts to live by those standards. But personal responsibility also means that when individuals fail to meet expected standards, they do not look around for some factor outside themselves to blame. The demise of personal responsibility occurs when individuals blame their family, their peers, their economic circumstances, or their society for...
