Personal Responsibility is a Master Key to Many Successes Teri Warrick GEN 200 Dr. Ward July 18, 2013

Personal Responsibility is a Master Key to Many Successes Personal responsibility is something taught and learned. It is accepting and owning one’s own choices and actions regardless of the consequences; to take complete ownership of one’s physically, emotionally, and psychologically self. Acceptance of personal responsibility requires integrity, commitment, and dedication. Possessing the ability to recognize how some decisions and actions can affect the people around you. Parents teach these values to their children at a very early age. Parents teach commitment by encouraging children to follow through with a promise, dedication by encouraging them to keep trying, regardless of how many times they may fail, and accountability if they choose not to. These are all building blocks to learning personal responsibility. As a mother and a college student, I have the personal responsibility to dedicate myself to my children and my education. I have had to utilize all resources available to me to be successful at both, and it takes honest commitment and dedication to achieve that success. Balancing family and school is a huge personal responsibility and I strive with honesty and integrity to be the best parent, teacher, and student I can be. There is an enormous correlation between personal responsibility and college success. A person cannot obtain one without maintaining the other. As a parent and a student, I have the benefit of continuing to teach my children personal responsibility along with college success through my own personal examples and experiences. My children have the benefit of witnessing firsthand, that personal responsibility is a master key to many successes in life, especially in college and as a parent. Having the ability to accomplish many successes in life starts with integrity as this allows us to learn how to dedicate ourselves to the commitment and completion of tasks and goals. For example, if a person begins college, they have the personal responsibility to dedicate themselves to his or her education, he or she must commit to attending classes, and completion of assignments to ensure he or she graduate. If that person decides to skip classes and postpone completion of assignment, they must accept personal accountability if they fail classes or do not graduate as a result. As a mother and a student, I have to dedicate myself to my children and my education. I have the personal responsibility to balance my family and school. For example, I have a sick child, an essay due, and class in the evening. It is my personal responsibility to make sure I can accomplish the assignment and attend class while making sure my child is safe and taken care of. It is not an easy task to be successful at one, let alone both. Especially when a parent has no help, no assistance, and no support system; struggling to accomplish all of this on their own, to give their children a better life, to give them a positive role model. Research has shown that mothers perceive their children’s care, transportation, housing, and finances to be a critical factor in their academic success and sources indicate (Family Care Solutions 2010) resources are limited or non-existent in these areas (Lovell, Elyse D’nn (2011). Integrity and determination set in at these difficult times. I have to utilize all resources available to me as a mother and a student. Curtis Bickham said (G. Wol, Parents in College Must Juggle Responsibilities) “Parents in college utilize school resources more effectively than traditional age students because they are mature enough to understand how valuable the school resources are for them.” (paragraph. 14). Personal responsibility as a mother and a student means caring for my children; showing them, the value of dedication by completing my assignment; showing them the value of commitment by attending class. Teaching them personal responsibility by not using my sick child (providing I have someone to care for her) as an excuse to not complete my assignment or attend class, no matter how justified it may seem. It is my responsibility to ensure I am capable of completing all my commitments and I am the only one accountable if I cannot. As long as I continue to strive to be the best mother, student, and teacher I can be; I will be the role model for my children that I have dedicated myself to becoming. Unfortunately, many people believe that success comes at any cost, though personal responsibility is not one of them. That if they fail at something, it is someone else’s fault. That success is only for the strong; those who are willing to step on anyone necessary in order to climb higher up the ladder of success. Success is hard work, and all too often many try to take the easy way to success; however, they have no idea that there is no such thing. Success only comes with hard work, integrity, commitment, and dedication As a mother and a student, there is no better way to teach my children than by example, and so far, college has been an enlightening and life-changing experience for my family and me. Through my experiences, examples, and teachings, my children have learned firsthand what integrity stands for, dedication means, and commitment is. Moreover, they have learned the meaning of personal responsibility and college success. Additionally, when you take personal responsibility and enroll in college, you are dedicating yourself to education, committing yourself to the challenges it will bring, and that no one is responsible for your decisions or actions but you. If you choose not to attend classes or complete assignments, you are accountable, no one else. If you truly dedicate and commit yourself to college, you will find that personal responsibility is a master key to many successes in life, especially as a parent and a student.

...Abramowitz Personal Responsibility Personal responsibility by definition means accountability in our own life, circumstances, successes, and failures. When applied to education, personal responsibility might be best described as identification of the essential aspects that ensure our success and a commitment to achieving success. In order to obtain a higher level of education, students must accept personal responsibility through effective time management and self-motivation. Accepting personal responsibility means holding oneself accountable for the choices we made regardless of whether or not these choices produced positive results. We must take claim for all the actions and face consequent of those actions. Given opportunities, students have no choice about “to become responsible”. The more chances given, the more likely students will experience success (Gubacs-Collins, 2007). Personal responsibility and college success go hand in hand. Daily tasks such as taking care of my two girls, house chores, and balancing school work is hard to squeeze into a day unless you learn to manage your time wisely. In order to manage your time wisely you must take charge of your actions by practicing self-discipline. Making the right choices can lead to many rewards, but holding yourself accountable for failures will help you make better decisions in the future (Haskins, 2009). Time management, self-discipline, and accountability all comes down to personal responsibility. In my opinion, personal responsibility is setting an attainable goal, taking the actions needed to reach your goal, and holding yourself accountable for those actions. In short, personal responsibility is the key to college success. Self-discipline Planning to go to college is a big step that requires a lot of self-discipline. Self-discipline is about setting attainable goals and being able to follow through until reaching said goals. Setting attainable goals will help you succeed. Attempting goals that are unattainable not only sets you up for failure, but will discourage you from setting new goals in the future. Using a planning strategy of taking a long-term goal and breaking it up into short-term goals will keep you on track (Ellis, 2010). Most people...

Personal Responsibility

...Personal Responsibility and College Success University of Phoenix GEN/200 The orderly or chaotic lives that we live today are a direct result of the level of personal responsibility that we hold. The fact is that our actions are within our control. Though we are not responsible for everything that happens to us, we alone are responsible for our actions. “There is an emerging consensus that personal and social responsibility can no longer be viewed as a simplistic, one-dimensional, or discrete construct” (Swaner, 2005). With the intent to follow personal responsibility, you must first identify what it means to you, determine the relationship between personal responsibility and college success, and have a plan to follow it. In order to get a dictionary definition of the term “personal responsibility,” I split the term into its two entities; personal and responsibility. The Collins English Dictionary defines personal as “of or relating to the private aspects of a person’s life” (“personal” n.d.), and responsibility as “the state or position of being responsible” and “the ability or authority to act or decide on one’s own, without supervision” (“responsibility” n.d.). To me, personal responsibility means developing the nerve to be accountable for your actions, or lack of, being able to determine the difference between right and wrong and know how to make decisions accordingly, and be capable of placing personal responsibility at the top of your list of values. Doherty (1998)...

Personal Responsibility

...Personal Responsibility Everyday individuals live with everlasting responsibilities. Responsibilities are part of everyday life routine. It can be looked at as a way of life. So it would safe to say a way life is having responsibilities that consist of, but not limited to, personal goals, educational success, and financial stability. Personal goals, educational success, and financial stability will be discussed as the main points of personal responsibilities. As everyone is entitled to their own opinion, responsibilities is defined as being able to act independently and make decisions without having someone authorizing it in particular. Personal responsibility refers to responsibility in a sense that one is personally responsible for achieving long-term and short-term goals, educational success, and financial stability. In this instance, long-term goals are considered a responsibility. It would have to be achieved by the person aiming for that long-term goal. A long-term goal may roughly take anywhere from five to ten years, maybe even up to twenty or thirty. If someone long-term goal is intended to be reached between five, ten, twenty or thirty years, it simply becomes a responsibility to make sure that the specific long-term goal is met. A master’s degree can be looked as a long-term goal. In order to achieve that goal, the person responsible must ensure that degree plan is created and carry out the task outlined in that degree plan. In that degree plan may layout some...

Gen 200 Personal Responsibiity

...Personal Responsibility is Essential for Success John Smith Gen 200 January 25, 2014 Professor Charles Shapiro Lack of personal responsibility will keep some people from achieving goals and dreams. Personal responsibility creates the foundation for success, successful behaviors, and not being dependent on others for success. Some people will blame other individuals or circumstances that may arise instead of their deficient level of personal responsibility for their lack of success. Three main components of personal responsibility that are the core to achieving academic success are time management, stress management, and health. Without following these few key points academics can be more of a challenge than it should be. Taking responsibility for one’s actions is the first step towards building a solid foundation for one’s success. It is likely that one will make some wrong choices, but it is in making wrong decisions that create opportunities to learn valuable lessons. When one admits to being wrong, it creates a vulnerability that is needed to grow in decision-making. Being honest is what will set one free to be able to learn more about one’s self and to become better. Ellis (2011) found “ The principle of telling the truth is applied universally by people who want to turn their lives around” (p. 25). All of these self-evaluation practices will be ineffective without taking action. It is like having a combination to a lock and never using the combination to open that...
