1.0 Introduction

My most recent role is Customer Care Supervisor in the Customer Relations division of MTN Nigeria Communications Ltd, a multinational telecommunications company in Africa, and also in the Middle East. I am responsible for leading, monitoring, coaching and motivating a team of 20 to 40 call centre representatives to achieve team Key Performance Indicators (KPIs). In addition to these responsibilities, I have to actively participate in any project management opportunities with the department and was also assigned a number of key accounts to manage. I am expected to plan and organise the management of these key accounts within my team. As the manager of a team, my challenge was to provide effective leadership that will help in motivating the team members to align their behaviour with the company’s core values. Despite the fact that I was not given formal training on managing, leading and motivating a team, my team performance was always above average. I look forward to handling more challenging management role that is why I am in IBAM to pursue a Master in Business Administration (MBA)
As a result of the lapses noticed in my skills of managing people and myself, I hope to focus my Personal Development Plan (PDP) on the skills identified in this piece of work, known as the ‘big 5s’. This piece of work will deal with two main areas of, skills audit to identify the skills to develop, and a SMART action plan to help me achieve perfection. However, I will also leverage on SWOT analysis and the Kolb learning cycle in identifying the ‘big 5s’.

2.0 Skills Audit
2.1 Definition
The skills audit is ‘a convenient way of identifying the capabilities available to an individual for a specific task...’ (rdi, 2010; p1)

Reflection on Personal Skills Development

... Through various projects and presentations, individual or group ones, and even more through feedback on my work, I managed to develop my academic and personal skills both as an independent learner, but also as a member of formal or informal groups. Having been assigned tasks such as literature reviews, research essays or reflective essays, all of them involving either an oral or written presentation, I employed a range of skills that could not have found a better environment to develop in; critical thinking, working with others and time management are just few examples. Aside from measuring our ability and understanding of the assigned task, evaluation allows us to progress on things we are performing well on and adjust our weaknesses. According to Marshall and Rowland (1998), evaluation can be performed by ourselves, assessing and judging our work in a subjective manner or by others. However, the drawback of being our own assessors is the risk of being accused of bias. Therefore, acknowledging the feedback received on my work has been a significant factor for the development of my skills. It not only helped me better identify my strengths and weaknesses, but also gave me self-confidence and enthusiasm, two key factors for a continual improvement of one's self. The module I have undertaken in the second term, Personal Skills for Business Management Students, has undoubtedly drawn my attention to some of my weak points, such as note taking strategies and paraphrasing, and helped...

Coaching and Mentoring

...mentoring is on the rise within the workplace. Several organizations have adopted the process of coaching and mentoring as development tools to develop those employees who are seeking future advancement. Also, they are setting the foundation for future leaders. The adaption of these developmental tools within an organization is providing employees with the necessary feedback and support to establish and plan their career. Coaching and mentoring provides an employee with the necessary leadership and management skills they would need to strive up the career ladder within an organization. These processes are both ‘helping’ activities, employed either as distinct interventions or together as part of a package of personal development? Coaching and mentoring are deemed a highly effective way to help employees through talking, sense of direction and guidance, self esteem, efficacy and accomplishment. The differences in the application stages of these processes are naturally reflected in the results. Coaching and Mentoring In my opinion, Coaching and Mentoring are excellent programs for organization to have in place, especially for personal whom are seeking future advancement and want to excel in their careers with the organizations. A recent CIPD (Chartered Institute of Development) surveys have reported that the use of coaching and mentoring as development tool are increasing within organizations. An individual's personality is an aggregate conglomeration of the decisions they have made throughout their life and the memory of the experiences to which these decisions led. There are inherent natural, genetic, and environmental factors that contribute to the development of our personality. According to process of socialization, "personality also colors our values, beliefs, and expectations. Hereditary factors that contribute to personality development do so as a result of interactions with the particular social environment in which people live." There are several personality types as Katharine Cook Briggs and Isabel Briggs Myers illustrated in several personalities typology tests, which are based on Carl Jung's school of Analytical psychology. However, these tests only provide enlightenment based on the preliminary insight scored according to the answers judged by the parameters of the test. Other theories on personality development include Jean Piaget's stages of development, Erik Erikson's stages of psychosocial development, and personality development in Sigmund Freud's theory being formed through the interaction of id, ego, and super-ego. ...and holistic commitment to the continued professional development of employees and managers alike is highly beneficial, not only for the continued success of a business or organization but for the well being and personal development of individuals. Megginson and Whitaker (2007:3) reflect on the personal opportunities afforded through CPD: ‘ It challenges us to make time for personal reflection and review. It reminds us that we have responsibility for developing ourselves…’ Remaining competitive in this ever changing global market is becoming increasingly difficult, putting pressure on managers to deliver consistently high standards of product/service delivery. Guskey (2001) asks that we recognise that professional development is a purposeful and intentional process, which is designed to evoke positive change within organisations. In order to maintain an effective and efficient workforce and to ensure that managers’ skills reflect this commitment to professional development then it is imperative that we, as managers, set personal and professional targets to ensure that our skills accurately reflect organisational goals and direction. Section 1: Demonstrate how you would assess personal and professional skills required to achieve strategic goals There exists a plethora of models to evaluate personal and professional skills but if we are to construct the most accurate and objective overview of our own development needs we must ensure that we do not interpret results...
