...because of this patient's comment, I made the drastic change to drop pharmacy and switch career paths. I no longer wanted to make the same mistake and choose something I did not enjoy, like pharmacy. I wanted to explore something I have always been passionate about, which is numbers! While I found out the hard way about what I wanted to pursue in life, it was better for me to derive to this decision sooner than later. Later that year, I decided to get my feet wet by first taking an introduction to accounting course. It was so minimal and to explore even more, I took the subsequent course as well. After taking those courses, it utterly reinforced my decision to go into accounting. I enjoyed learning about the general ledger, financial statements and other accounting topics. I loved it. The verdict to pursue accounting was easy for me after I recognized my strong curiosity in this subject. Learning through textbooks was not sufficient, I also wanted to see how accounting was relevant and applied in reality. Luckily at my current employment...

...Personal Statement My parents never had the opportunity to make it past elementary school. Thus, they were extremely proud when I got accepted to the University of Maryland. No one else in my family has ever gone to a University before, so I have had to pave my own path. Once I graduate, I will be the first person in my family with a bachelor's degree. I hope to inspire my younger brother to do the same. The opportunity to apply to grad school is one of the biggest privileges I have ever had. Continuing my education is important to me because it represents all the opportunities I have been given thanks to my parent’s sacrifices. I am hard working, driven, and will be a good fit in the Master's program in Clinical Psychology. I have always been interested in what makes people act in certain ways. The reasons as to why some deal with chronic depression while others bounce back quickly. I took introduction to psychology in high school and found it especially intriguing. However, it had never occurred to me to pursue it as a career until one of my best friends started going through a manic episode. She was always an upbeat person so her being extremely energetic and excitable, was not of much concern to me. What did cause my alarm was when she would get immensely down. One evening she called me...

...I have never thought about being a student of economics three years ago before I applied for my undergraduate university. I was the Chief Editor of my high school’s newspaper and I was dreaming about becoming a journalist who builds a better world for the poor and the need and bring equality and prosperity to those less favored community. Three years of Economics study teaches me many things. Among them, the most important one is that there is another approach to the my goal. Many predecessors of mine have proven that the economy study can change the world by their thought and witness. Liberalism leads to the vitality and creativity in the global markets; Malthusianism convinces the developing countries to take actions on the population control; Welfare Economics help balance the living standard between the poor and the rich in some way. These are the changes I wish to make myself. It might not be the most direct way to help people or even a country sort out their financial problems like journalists or social workers do but it is the way that truly make a difference because the power of great thoughts can change the world fundamentally. I would like to be part of it, by making some contributions on Economics. Inspired by Capital in the Twenty-First Century, I am writing an essay about the distinction of distribution with my classmate. I have witnessed the inequality of income distribution : my mother worked as a contract worker for a company where her monthly income was half...

...Graduate College has to offer. We discussed which program may work best for me, location, and financial aid. As we were closing out the interview Ms Bakutis opened a black folder shaped like an elegant envelope and pulled out papers that needed to be returned as soon as possible. She then alerted me that classes would begin on December 2nd, 2013, so it would be beneficial to me to get started as soon as possible. The final thing Ms. Bakutis told me as we wrapped up our meeting is that I would need to submit a personal statement along with two letters of recommendation. Whoa!!!!! At that moment everything stopped. I need to write a personal statement? Wow!!! I’ve never written a personal statement. Am I really ready for this? These were just some of the thoughts running through my mind. I went into panic mode as my mind started racing. Aaaww man, I have to write a paper to get into the Master’s Program? Shoot!! What would I write about? Will this really determine whether the school will accept me or not? I haven’t written a paper since I was in the BSW program at Governors State University. Then I thought, forget it, I’m not doing this. There were so many thoughts going through my...

...When I was in grad school, I faced near-constant financial problems. My income was barely adequate, and the variety of streams it came from meant that my access to the money I’d already earned was often delayed in unpredictable ways. My one advantage was a good credit rating. I had gotten my first credit card as an undergrad, and I used it sparingly and paid it in full nearly every month. After a semester abroad, I was carrying a balance, and I took out a small bank loan to pay it off. So I had drawn on a significant amount of credit and used it responsibly. I understand that not everyone starts from this point, so my strategies may be inapplicable for many people. My goal was to keep my spending within the limits of my income and subsidized student loans. Like most grad students, I maintained a pretty austere lifestyle, but nonetheless there were times when I was forced to engage in deficit spending. My strategy for coping with the difficulties of financial management during these periods was based on three simple principles: 1. Think short-term: Long-term questions like how I was going to pay everything off were moot. The important thing was how I was going to keep meeting my immediate obligations until the next influx of cash came. 2. Favor liquidity: Given my access to credit, the only hard constraint was the availability of cash (meaning money in my checking account). If given a choice between going further into debt or making a cash payment that would quickly put...

...A few statements I stand by (let’s get rid of some myths): 1. It is never too late to choose surgery as a career. Many do not choose until the end of their third year. 2. Though most students who know they are interested in surgery do it as their last rotation in Year III, whether you do surgery first or last has historically had no effect on your grade or outcome. 3. If you are savvy in your rank list, you will likely match in a program. Most don’t match because they did not rank enough programs (or the right programs). Be honest about your prospects and have a mentor. 4. The majority of general surgery programs are very good. You will graduate being a good surgeon and you will get a good fellowship or a job. Now, the facts (from NRMP book, found lying around in the KSOM Student Affairs Office): In 2004: - 1,042 of 1,044 general surgery spots were filled. The remaining 2 spots filled the day after the MATCH. - Of U.S. grads, 885 matched out of 1,230 applicants (72%), the rest were foreign grads. Note that the national average for all specialties is a 93% match rate. - The average student ranked 12.4 programs. This is too low. More statistics (from FREIDA, NRMP): - 253 = number of G-surgery programs - 5 years + = number of years in training. (May change soon to 4 years +) - 60% = percentage of graduates to move on to fellowships (an extra 1-3 years) What you need in your application: ERAS application Curriculum Vitae – please make it look professional Personal Statement – actually...

...Personal Reflection Christopher Davis CSS101_4 January 21, 2015 Karin Detweiler Personal Reflection In this course I learned that having commitment brings out our true potential because it motivates us to give our best, overcome obstacles, stand up even after failures, and that my soft skills are more valuable than I realized. Though I have been through this course once before at a different college, when I earned my Associate’s Degree we didn’t do a lot of research because it was a technology school. I was surprised by how much prospective employers look at your soft skills over your knowledge. What surprised me the most was the paragraph that we had to copy and paste when making our APA template. This statement really made me think, (Many students grumble and moan when their instructor assigns them to complete a group project. Some students may worry that they will have to do the whole assignment on their own, if their group members do not pull their weight. Other students insist that they work better on their own. However, students would be wise to note that working in group projects helps them develop and refine their soft skills. Soft skills are “collection of personal, positive attributes and competencies that enhance your relationships, job performance, and value to the market” (Smith, 2011). And, they are becoming increasingly more important...

...INTRODUCTION There are several opinion says that university students should not be given courses on study skills in their study programme, as they are expected to have acquired these competencies from their earlier education. From my point of view, I agreed with the above topic. The reason I agreed it is because we should not waste our valuable time in university to been taught on study skills. As one of the out campus student, time is very valuable to us. We have to secrete our time between study, work and family. Basically all the study skills such as time management, note taking, SQ3R and so on should be taught in our early education. (primary or secondary). What are the study skills? The term study skills is often used interchangeable with many other term which all describe the same thing – a person’s ability to study effectively, and their ability to acquire knowledge As I mention earlier, the study skills can be categorized as follows: Time management – as a university student, we need to organize our work for ourselves. The number of simultaneous demands being made upon us by different tutors and different courses can be quite daunting at first. Note taking - Everyone takes notes for different purposes at different times. Note-taking can serve a variety of functions depending upon both the context in which they are taken. For an example, kindly see appendix 1 (Cornell note taking) SQ3R – Is on of the reading technic that a student can implent in their...

...Distinguishing between these types of variables is important, as several statistical tools may only be used for certain types of data. Nominal variables: where values are assigned to categories in no particular order. This assignment of values is arbitrary and holds no particular meaning or order to them. For example, “sex” where 1=male 2=female “marital status” where 1=never married 2= married 3=defacto “yes/no type questions” where 1=yes 2=no. Ordinal variables: where values are assigned to categories that are related to each other in some logical order – such as ascending or descending order. For example, “age group” 1=under 21yrs 2=21-35yrs 3=35-49yrs 4=50 yrs and over “education” where 1=high school completed 2=tertiary studies completed 3=post-graduate studies completed. The higher the value assigned, the higher the category (ie. higher age group or education level). Interval variables: where the values assigned are ordered in the same way as ordinal variables, however, the intervals or distances between the categories are equally spaced. For example, “please rate the importance of the following attributes…” according to the scale 1----------2----------3----------4----------5 where 1=strongly disagree 2=somewhat disagree 3=neither disagree nor agree 4=somewhat agree 5=strongly agree. All Likert type scales are interval in nature. Ratio variables:...

...Writing a student reference/letter of recommendation The Careers Service Centre is often asked for guidelines about what should be included in letters of reference. GENERAL GUIDELINES • • • • • • • • • (JB Aug 2012) Be specific and give examples to justify the points that you make. Request a CV or personal statement for additional information. This can inform your writing and enable you to be specific e.g. refer to anecdotes that back up points about a student's personality and ability. Raise the issue of references with students in class early in the academic year and clarify your / the Department's procedure for dealing with references. One page of a typewritten A4 page is generally sufficient - but do try to write more than one paragraph!. Students should inform you of the job(s) or course(s) they are applying for. The reader of the letter wishes to get to know the person better and you can tailor your give evidence of relevant skills, knowledge or experiences. If the letter is going to be negative, or overly bland, then tell the student who requests it in advance. The request may then be withdrawn. Some writers suggest that you avoid the gushing letter that only has positives to say and encourage you to write briefly about a weakness/area for development as it will give balance to the letter. Either way be comfortable with what you say. You can also follow the letter with a phone call. Do not substitute a telephone reference for a written one if that is what is requested...

...Running Head: DIFFERENCES IN COMPETENCIES BETWEEN ADN VS BSN 1 Educational Preparation: Differences in Competencies Between Nurses Prepared at Associates-Degree Level Versus the Baccalaureate-Degree Level in Nursing Jenny Curie Grand Canyon University NRS-430V Tara Harris February 10, 2013 DIFFERENCES IN COMPETENCIES BETWEEN ADN VS BSN 2 Competency is defined as the quality of being competent. Along with the growing profession and the ever growing need for quality health care the debate over what qualifies a nurse to be skillful and competent in her profession and what type of education is required is at the for front. What are the differences in competency between a nurse with an associates degree and one holding a baccalaureate degree? Of the three million registered nurses nationwide 50% of those hold a baccalaureate degree while 36.1% have an associates degree, and 13% a diploma (AACN, Nursing Workforce).
