Society can't function if everyone is the same. Hence we have diversity in society which isn't only reflected in the cultural activities but also in the different economic activities that are undertaken by the members of the society. I have always dreamed of studying in an environment where I will get to meet people from different backgrounds, people who have different understanding of life, people who have different priorities and different ways of thought. I feel that this will help me to understand what life is really about and how one's view changes as he experiences diversity. It will also help me academically as I'll get to learn so many different things from so many different people. The environment I get to study in will definitely shape my outlook. I think that studying in X University will allow me to experience something that I believe to be essentially necessary if I wish to succeed in life. Studying is not just about focusing on the area of your interest. It's much more. One can’t be called educated just because he holds degrees and specializes in one or two subjects. Studying is about learning about yourself, about getting to know who you are and how you relate with everyone else. It's about extirpating the ego that breeds arrogance and ignorance. If I can't appreciate the importance of "others" in society than there is no point in studying. I strongly feel that X University has that kind of environment and I will definitely benefit from the two-and-a-half centuries of tradition and heritage that celebrates diversity, community and achievement. I also feel that studying in X will enable me to experience The American Dream. I'll get to meet people who like me believe in The American dream, believe that America always provides opportunity for those who work hard and believe that America has always welcomed the other. America's proud history of civil rights movement and most recently the election of an African American president is a good example of this and it couldn't have been possible without the intellectual contribution made by institutions like X. The mixing of different people and diverse ideas in institutions like X is today reflected in the mainstream American society. But of course, it's not just me who stands to gain from studying in an institution like X. American and its social and economic institutions have gained from people flocking there and I don't see my case being any different. I'm sure that my presence in X will enhance and strengthen the diversity in the community. Also, I come from South Asia and South Asia is place where there are many different cultures and religions have lived side by side for time immemorial. My experience is bound to add to the flavor. I believe that if I'm given the chance to study in X I can give back to community much that I will learn. I'll contribute to society physically, economically and intellectually. I grew up in a country where the education system not only fails to provide us with up to date scientific innovations but also takes a seriously flawed approach towards teaching science or any other subject. Students have to face considerable hardship due to lack of educational tools and qualified teachers. Despite all these problems I managed to secure a place among the top 5000 students out of the more than 800000 students who received the best grades in the 2009 National exam. I believe that the community will only gain by giving me the opportunity.

Masters Admission

...Demystifying the American Graduate Admissions Process Karthik Raghunathan Graduate Class of 2010 Stanford Computer Science kr@cs.stanford.edu Abstract This paper attempts to discuss at length the various factors (along with their respective weightage) that the admissions committee at a top graduate school in the US takes into account while reviewing a Master of Science (MS) application. Disclaimer This paper is a mixture of facts, inferences and extrapolations, based on my personal experience as an admissions committee member at Stanford. All views expressed here are solely mine and do not necessarily reflect the views or opinions of Stanford University. 1. Introduction In this paper, I outline the various parameters involved in the complex decision making process of a Masters admissions committee in a top graduate school in the US. To clarify this further, (i) This report is mainly targeted at MS applicants, but a lot of it can be extended to PhD applications as well. In most cases, the requirements for a PhD admit will just be a stricter version of those mentioned here. (ii) I do not have a specific list of universities in mind when I say "a top graduate school". Stanford, MIT, UC Berkeley and CMU are certainly up there, but I am not particularly referring to any specific list of graduate school rankings. In a more general sense, I am talking about schools where the default attitude of the admissions committee is "rejected, unless strongly proved otherwise" rather...

How to Write a Personal Statement

...How to Write a Personal Statement
 by
UNM Prof. Elizabeth Archuleta Through a personal statement, you introduce yourself to the university; it reflects your personality and intellect. It is important that you read each question carefully and make every effort to understand and respond to it with well-considered responses and in a persuasive enough manner to hold the reader’s interest. 1. Understand and Explain Yourself
One of the main problems when writing is that applicants fail to take a thorough and analytical look at themselves and their objectives. Admission committee members are looking for interesting, insightful, revealing, and non-generic essays that suggest you have successfully gone through a process of careful reflection and self-examination. 2. Set Yourself Apart
Committees are looking for something PERSONAL and ANALYTICAL. This means sharing information you rarely share with others and assessing your life more critically than usual. This approach is key to a successful personal statement. Exercise: In order to begin writing your personal statement – your story—you’ll need to answer some basic questions to prepare yourself. Questions: * What is special, unique, distinctive, or impressive about you or your life story? What details of your life (personal or family problems/ history, any genuinely notable accomplishments, people or events that have shaped you or influenced your goals) might help the committee better understand you or help set you apart...

...What is Personal Statement Overview of the Personal Statement Personal statements are sometimes also called "application essays" or "statements of purpose." Whatever they are called, they are essentially essays which are written in response to a question or questions on a graduate or professional school application form which asks for some sort of sustained response. Some applications ask more specific questions than others. There is no set formula to follow in shaping your response, only choices for you to make, such as whether you should write an essay that is more autobiographically focused or one that is more professionally focused. From application to application, requested personal statements also vary widely in length, ranging from a couple of paragraphs to a series of essays of a page or so each. Personal statements are most important when you are applying to an extremely competitive program, where all the applicants have high test scores and GPA's, and when you are a marginal candidate and need the essay to compensate for low test scores or a low GPA. :: Context Considerations How are personal statements read, and by whom? It's most likely that your personal statement will be read by professors who serve on an admissions committee in the department to which you are applying. It is important in developing your personal statement to carefully consider this audience. What are the areas of specialty of this department, and what might it be looking for in a graduate...

Gap Year: Good/Bad

...from high school wants to go to college. Some decide to directly enrol into college or university, while the others opt for a gap of a year prior to enrolling in higher education. The time period between high school graduation and arrival at college can be the result of several factors, including deferred admission at a student's college of choice or purposely taking a gap year to prepare for the next step of formal education. The argument arises when the students prefer taking gap to explore the world & to find some field they are interested in and when the parents worry about their children getting off track regarding higher education. Traditionally gap years are seen as time out to travel between school and university, to learn life experiences and broaden horizons. It is not unusual for a student to hesitate to pack bags before heading off to college right away. They might want to take a year off before going to college. Taking a gap year is also linked to higher motivation in college. While many students take a year off to earn money for tuition, programs involving international travel or service work are more common among affluent students or those from competitive high schools, where pressure to get good grades and gain admission to a leading college is most intense. Burnout from the competitive pressure of high school and a desire "to find out more about themselves," are the top two reasons students take gap years. Many competitive colleges and universities encourage applicants...

...of Bias in College Applications The stress is inevitable. Freshmen become sophomores and sophomores become upperclassmen. Thoughts of SAT and ACT scores, GPA, essays, and letters of recommendation make their way to the forefront of student brains. High school students spend years creating a reputation of academic success for themselves. However, universities also have a reputation of bias that has been years in the making. Factors such as one’s religion and hometown can make or break a college application. One of the largest cases of anti-Semitism in college revolved around the Ivy League in the 20th century. Around 1926, the “Scholastic Aptitude Test” (SATs) became private colleges’ preferred exam. This test...
