I developed interest in studying Economics the very day I was introduced to the subject in my first year in the secondary school. Although I had the penchant to become a Financial Management Specialist, I realized that I could hardly become a successful one without studying Economics. This underpinned my resolve to combine Economics with Accounting during my undergraduate studies. My exposure to the intermediate level of Economics broadened my reasoning and decision-making skills which further deepened my interest in Economics. I have realized that Economics is important in every aspect of human life and that the study Economics offers a plethora of Vista. As Finance Manager, I employ both micro and macro economic data in taking financial decisions that will be in the best interest of my employers and stakeholders of the firm. For example, I consider economic factors such as inflation, interest and exchange rates and the principle of opportunity cost when performing my financial planning and treasury management functions. Apart from helping an individual to make rational choices, decisions or maximize any resources no matter how small, the study of Economics enables one to evaluate the effect of economic policies on the welfare of citizens. Statement of Purpose

...Sample Statement of Purpose: MBA The term “globalism” has become overused, and often misused. In fact, we might say that it has actually been devalued to the level of the everyday language of buzzword-brandishing marketing pundits. Such freewheeling usage has perhaps prompted many a CEO (or future CEO) to launch into a global plan or strategy without proper consideration of the demands and dynamics of the international marketplace. Many would-be globetrotters neglect the acquisition of language skills, knowledge of foreign trade and tax laws, accounting standards, etc., all of which are necessary to effectively “go global.” Superficial knowledge only leads to failure. This has, indeed, happened, and while there is no doubt that neglecting to capture the gains achievable in overseas markets is equally suicidal, misguided attempts at competing globally (along with rapidly developing opportunities in the global marketplace) have placed a dramatic premium on individuals who take the time to properly train themselves in international business. For me, the Columbia MBA is a significant component of this training. I foresee my own career moving in the direction of European/American business, initially from an advisory perspective (i.e. investment banking or consulting) and ultimately from a leadership role within a manufacturing entity, preferably a start-up venture. This prophecy, in part, has evolved from my past experiences in western and eastern Europe which, in turn, have formed...

...activities people undertake when obtaining, consuming, and disposing of products and services. 2. Why is consumption a key to understanding why consumers buy products Consuming means how, where, when, and under what circumstances consumers use products. For example, issues relating to consumption might include decisions about whether consumers use products at home or at the office. Researchers have focused on consumption analysis, which refers why and how people use products in addition to why and how they buy. Consumption analysis is a broader conceptual framework than buyer behavior because it includes issues that arise after the purchase process occurs – issues that often affect how people buy and the satisfaction they receive from their purchases. 3. What types of questions are answered by studying consumer behavior? 1. Why did you choose the school at which you are now studying? 2. Why did you buy your clothes from Abercrombie and Fitch, Old Navy, Benetton or any thousands of other retail stores? 3. How do you allocate the twenty-four hours of each day between studying, working, watching television, sleeping, working out in a gym, and watching or participating in a sport? 4. Do you usually cook your food from scratch, microwave it, or buy it already cooked in a restaurant to eat there or take home? Why do you eat certain types or brands of food most often? 5. ...is now in jeopardy. This statement appears to be surprising as it gives an impression of breaking the norm Due to the global economic crisis accompanied by inflation, rising cost of living, soaring rates of unemployment, Professor Richard K. Vedder, of Ohio University, who is the founder of the Center for College Affordability and Productivity, has put forth an argument, “Is college really worth it?.” Professor Vedder argues that the purpose of college is to get a job and according to an article in Times magazine, (pg. 56, 7 June, 2011) goes on to comment, “why fifteen percent of mail carriers have a bachelor’s degrees,” that it was a waste not just monetarily but of time and energy too. He feels a better bargain would have been to invest in the acquisition of skills appropriate to the work place which would have secured a credible future. Although this may appear valid at first glance, those who have a stake in higher education argue that there is plenty of evidence that suggest a college degree is worth it. For example, in response to professor Vedder attempts to promote an alternative to college degree, Dean Julie Morgan of the University of California at Los Angeles college of liberal arts and Sciences asserts that “four year degree program is one of the best investment in your life time” I agree with Morgan that this endowment is a smart decision, but I further argue that when thinking about college you have to think more about what you want out of it rather than what...

Employing Stategy in a Competitive Environment

...Assignment 1 Belinda Fryant Dr. James Batie BUS 599 Jan 15, 2013 Develop an argument supporting the importance of a strategic plan for the success of the defined business. Strategic planning is critical to business success. Different from classic business planning, the strategic variety involves vision, mission and outside-of-the-box thinking. Strategic planning describes where you want your company to go, not necessarily how you're going to get there. However, like all other "travel plans," without knowing where you want to go, creating details on how to arrive are meaningless. Strategic planning defines the "where" that your company is heading. Strategic planning is the core of any business. Thompson, A.A., Strickland, A.J., & Gamble, J.E. (2010) Crafting and Executing Strategy: The quest for competitive advantage: Concepts and cases: 2009 custom edition (17th ed). Unlike business plans, there is no one right way to create effective strategic planning. It is, by definition, brainstorming at its best. Strategic planning involves "feel" just as much as it depends on management science. Since it depends on creativity and outside-the-box thinking, there is no perfect way to design a winning strategic plan. The more you understand your company, your industry, and your corporate "wish list," the better a winning strategic plan you'll create. Pearce, John, & Robinson, Richard Strategic Management...

Malaysia Company Fraud: Cooking the Book

...activities undertaken by a business to falsify its financial statements. Thus, the objectives of this study are to investigate what the cooking-the-books activities carried out by businesses consist of, how they conduct them, and what the impact is on the business and its shareholders. The case study sample companies are two Malaysian companies that had received various awards from reputable third-party organizations. On the other hand, the activities undertaken in both companies have caused them to be labelled as Malaysian mini Enrons. We employ a qualitative research methodology as most prior research employs a quantitative methodology to investigate the determinant factors in businesses’ cooking-the-book activities. The result of the study shows that the managers have used their positions, prior experience, and regulatory loopholes in their activities. Furthermore, the financial report restatement and higher reported earnings are the early warning signals of their activities. As a result of this, the Malaysian Securities Commission has revised the corporate governance code, and among others incorporated the Audit Oversight Board, known in the US as the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board.
