...Comparing Jazz Dance and Hip-Hop Dance The purpose of this paper is to compare Jazz dance styles and Hip-Hop dance styles. The author will discuss the forms of the two dances styles as well as the past and present interpretations of the dances. There are many forms of Jazz dance including Swing, Cakewalk, Black Bottom, Charleston, and Lindy Hop. Although many of these forms of dance are commonly danced to jazz music, many performers also use Hip-Hop music for this type of dance. Jazz dance technique focuses on stylistic leaps and executing sharp moves. Common jazz moves include the catwalk, the ball change, the straddle split leap and the moonwalk. Maintaining good posture is an important element in jazz dance in order to maintain balance and poise while dancing. In order to complete jazz dance steps, a jazz dancer must be flexible, have a strong core and defined muscle tone in the legs. Both Jazz dance and modern dance techniques are based on the basics of the old ballet tradition. To excel in jazz dance, the dancer must master ballet techniques (Personal Communication, T. When a piece is being composed, notes are being put on paper but that in itself is a fair distance from creating what is known today as music. A collection of organized notes or pitches can create music that is enjoyable to listen to but it takes an added element to bridge the gap between what is written on a score and what the listener can have an emotional attachment with; and that is interpretation. Fryderyk Chopin’s works have become a staple for those learning to play the piano with firm technique and a strong grasp of the instrument. His pieces are known to stand out for their sheer beauty and sensuality and his ‘Sonata No.2 in B flat Minor, Op.35 part 1 is no exception. The piece begins with a four bar Grave that introduces the style that the rest of the piece is going to hold, with a few chords, the listener can anticipate what may come next. The Doppio Movimento begins with a steady bass-line with upward and downward runs staying constant and holding true to the chord. But comparing today`s hip hop music with the roots of hip hop can we really claim that hip-hop is really dead? If so, what are the facts that lead in the death of hip hop? What does its demise mean for the average fan? How to bring it back? Does it mean the genre will go down in irrelevance like what happened in disco music?
