Design/methodology/approach – The paper examines selected leadership literature through the lens of theory building blocks. It identifies the role of the ideal goal in leadership and its importance in developing the psychological aspect of leadership. Findings – The paper posits that leadership is a developmental process, which is based on the type of choice a leader makes. While choice implies that two good options are always available from which to select, one should make choices in accordance with his worldview, looking for affiliation (i.e. the Theta worldview), or looking for achievement (i.e. the Lambda worldview). Consequently, leaders need to recognise that the choices they make for organisational activities have to fit their own worldview. Pursuing the fit between one’s worldview and planned organisational activities ensures that leaders continuously improve their ethical behaviour. My expectations of the volunteering experience changed dramatically as I continued to work. The experiences I had under the authority of Andrea Spark were often times boring, but they taught me valuable information. I learned more about independence through my obligation to self-schedule and self-motivate without an overbearing authority guiding me onward, improved my work ethic, especially for mundane tasks, and learned that even seemingly insignificant activities can be helpful to the community. An expectation I had was that there would be a lot of supervision. Not to say that the volunteer coordinator, Andrea Spronk, did not lead us, but, rather, she gave us personal space and independence. I did not expect as much lack of external moderation as there was. It has taken me the entire semester and the detailed reading of the book, Leading With Meaning: Using Covenantal Leadership to Build a Better Organization by Moses Pava (2003) to help me make the solid connection between operational (structural) governance and moral/ethical governance. If the reader of this paper is an enlightened, educated academic, this point may not have a significant impact. On the other hand, if the reader is a “typical” lay practitioner, the point of this paper, supported by evidence provided by Pava (and the other cited resources) might offer a deep and long lasting influence which could possibly change how the reader thinks and acts in matters related to organizational leadership and governance.
