Persuasion Essay
4/30/2012

Dear Mom and Dad,

The transit system in place in Baton Rouge, the Capital Area Transit System (CATS), is crumbling. The goal of this transit system is to give riders a cheap, easy, and effective way of traveling throughout the city. In recent years, CATS has been struggling to maintain this goal, primarily due to a lack of funding, and by July will be completely out of resources and be forced to shut down. On April 21, 2012 there will be a vote for a comprehensive transit reform that decides the future of CATS. If approved, this vote will grant a 10.6 mill property tax to CATS that will allow it to continue and improve operations for the next 10 years (Strochein). I urge you to vote in favor of the comprehensive transit reform proposal on April 21 because it will greatly benefit our city by saving and reforming CATS, protecting 8,000 jobs, and positively affecting non-riders.
This proposal would not only save CATS from going under but also completely transform the public bus system of Baton Rouge. CATS has not been efficient for its riders, as the average wait time for a bus is 75 minutes and the average ride time is 2.5 hours. CATS has not improved or increased passenger amenities such as bus shelters and benches or added GPS tracking to the buses. CATS has not added new routes or updated its obsolete hub and spoke system to a grid system. CATS has not been there for its riders who depend on the bus system’s transportation each and every day (Marshall). All of these problems share a common source: lack of dedicated funding. The comprehensive transit reform will give CATS the funding it needs to solve these problems. According to Brian Marshall, CATS’ current CEO, the transit reform will allow the current hub and spoke system to be updated to a grid system, reduce wait times to

Cialdini Principles Of Persuasion Essay

...Persuasion is a definite aspect of education, both in a professor’s teaching methods and the students’ assignments for the teacher. Professors use various techniques of persuasion to influence and impart knowledge to their students on the subjects in which they are an authority to change their beliefs or attitudes towards those topics. The social psychologist Robert Cialdini (2003) discusses six principles of persuasion which are often used by people in everyday life whether unconsciously or consciously. It seems that the current theoretical and empirical studies on these principles of persuasion and various other “processes makes available to instructors a technology for systematically altering the nature of people’s beliefs and actions” (Friedrich...

The Manipulation of Anne by Mrs. Smith

...Logan Bass English E.283.851 16 April 2013 Critical Essay The Manipulation of Anne by Mrs. Smith On the surface Mrs. Smith appears to be the shining light that brings truth and a sense of justice to Persuasion after she reveals the truth about Mr. Elliot to Anne. However, if one were to dig deeper into the dialogue and analyze the language and the syntax between Mrs. Smith and Anne on page one hundred and sixty-six, one can see Mrs. Smith isn’t the savior that she would appear to be on the surface. Mrs. Smith is instead this person who is manipulative and conniving by using Anne’s admiration towards her as a way to then persuade Anne to do as she wishes which ultimately results in Mrs. Smith regaining some of her lost fortune through Anne and Captain Wentworth. This is significant because the narrative voice in Persuasion presents the argument that persuasion as a force upon others can be both a good and bad thing depending on the true intentions of the one persuading. Mrs. Smith and Anne have had a long-standing relationship that was formed several years ago when Mrs. Smith had helped Anne overcome the loss of her mother while away at school. Ever since then, Anne had deeply admired Mrs. Smith for what she did and the character she had shown. From the beginning of the dialogue between Mrs. Smith and Anne, Mrs. Smith is already trying to use Anne’s admiration towards herself for her own motives. When Mrs. Smith says, “My dear,” she is implying that Anne is someone whom...

Theoretical Concepts on Persuasion

...Part I: Theoretical discussion of some concepts on Persuasion 1. Define persuasion and distinguish it from other forms of communication. Persuasion is a form of communication that involves the ability to convince others to change his/her position on a certain subject. But unlike negotiation, which suggests some degree of backing down or meeting in the middle. “Rather than compromising, as in negotiation, effective persuasion will actually convince the opposing party to abandon their previous position and embrace yours (http://westsidetoastmasters.com/resources/laws_persuasion/chap1.html).” In other words, effective persuasion enables you to get other people to willingly do what you want them to do. Looking closely at the definition of Perloff (2003) “Persuasion is a symbolic process in which communicators try to convince other people to change their attitudes or behavior regarding an issue through the transmission of a message, in an atmosphere of free choice.” The two most important component of this definition are: (1) the deliberate intention to change the attitude or behavior of another person, and (2) voluntary compliance, that is, not by force. Therefore, although persuasion is like any other form of communication such that it is a “process of stimulating meaning in the mind of another by means of a message (Putnam, 2014).” it is different from the accidental type since in the accidental form there is no intention to change attitudes or behavior but simply to transmit...

Phl Critical Thinking and Language Essay

...Critical Thinking and Language Essay University of Phoenix PHL 251: Critical Thinking February 6, 2006 Course Facilitator: William Salmon The purpose of this essay is multifaceted. I will describe an aspect of my life using metaphors; discuss the role that language and language diversity play in the critical thinking process; discuss how language can limit or empower the expression of our thoughts; and discuss the role of critical thinking in persuasion. Life has its ups and downs and in the past several months I have faced more downs than ups. As nurses we are trained to care for other and be aware for the signs and symptoms of multiple disease processes. When it comes to ourselves we tend to ignore all the warning signs of our body when it comes to any impending illnesses. In September a seemingly harmless virus turned into a painful auto immune disease that will affect me for the rest of my life. I usually avoid doctors and hospitals like the plaque when I’m not at work, so by the time I was forced to go to the emergency room I was as weak as a kitten. My gut was twisted in knots while I waited for the doctor imagining every possible cause of my problem. After hearing the diagnosis and being told that I had to be admitted to the hospital I was at the end of my rope. I was in denial, I don’t get sick often and it’s never serious. I’m a nurse I get exposed to countless germs and am never sick more than a few days; I was too young to be...

The Effectiveness of Humor in Persuasion.Docx Uploaded Successfully

...Your emotions plays a critical role in persuasion. There are many emotions we all have to deal as individuals on an everyday basis, but the one emotion we often used in persuasion is humor. Humor is a valuable quality that causes laughter in individuals as they do ridiculous things or say a few silly jokes to make individuals laugh and put individuals in a great mood. “According to persuasion theory, people who are in good mood are less likely to disagree with a persuasion…” (Lyttle, 2001, p.207). Your emotions also work together with the way an individual meditates on different issues or situations in our lives. There are many different methods of persuasion techniques that have been used in marketing, public campaign, and in political messages. The authentic message itself is essential as one message can bring about wavering altitudes of emotions and humor for many different people. In human relationship humor is not only significant, but it can help reliefs the pressure and avoid the escalation of conflict, but it is also can be a remedy for your heart, soul, and mind. (Seiter & Gass, 2004). Some individuals have many different opinions on this subject matter, however, regarding the effectiveness of humor in persuasion. After reading Perspective on persuasion, social influence, and compliance, The Effectiveness of humor in persuasion: the case of business ethics training, and The Joint impact of humor and argument strength in a print advertising context: a case for weaker...

Authority vs Persuasion

...American Economic Review: Papers & Proceedings 2009, 99:2, 448–453 http://www.aeaweb.org/articles.php?doi=10.1257/aer.99.2.448 Beliefs and disagreement in OrganizatiOns † Authority versus Persuasion By Eric Van den Steen* Managers often face a choice between authority and persuasion. In particular, since a firm’s formal and relational contracts and its culture and norms are quite rigid in the short term, a manager who needs to prevent an employee from undertaking the wrong action has the choice between either trying to persuade this employee or relying on interpersonal authority.1 Herbert Simon (1947) noted, for example, that “when … disagreement is not resolved by discussion, persuasion, or other means of conviction, then it must be decided by the authority of one or the other participant” and that “in actual practice … authority is liberally admixed with suggestion and persuasion.” Obviously, in choosing between persuasion and authority, the manager makes a cost-benefit trade-off. This paper studies that trade-off, focusing in particular on agency conflicts that originate in open disagreement, in the sense of differing priors. To that purpose, I will study a setting in which a principal and an agent are involved in a project. The project’s outcome depends both on decisions and on implementation effort by the agent, i.e., on effort to execute the decisions. A key issue is that the principal and agent may openly disagree on which decisions are most likely to † Discussants:...

...the NHS main focuses. According BBC health, “Obesity is caused by two simple factors - an unhealthy diet (typically too rich in sugar and fats and not enough fibre and carbohydrate) and not doing enough exercise to burn off the calories consumed.” In 2009, 16% of boys aged 2 to 15, and 15% of girls were classed as obese between the ages of 2-15 The Health and Social Care Information Centre. This large percentage of obesity amongst children needs to be addressed before it become out of hand acceptable in society. David Cameron announced earlier this year that obesity costs the NHS £4 billion a year and that is looking to grow. This issue does need to be tackled to stop the growth of obesity not only to save money but lives too. With participation in sport dropping between 2009 and 2010 (Mintel) and obesity levels growing, changes need to be made in people habits in participating in sport and eating healthy. Effective Persuasion

...Axia College Material Effective Persuasion Part One While reading the essay written by Jerry Fensterman, “I See Why Others Choose To Die”, I was touched because it was written on personal experiences as opposed to those written by medical experts. His writing did persuade me that people should have the choice of euthanasia while in the final stages of a terminal illness, knowing there is no further relief for the excruciating pain they are experiencing or no additional medical treatment can be administered. During his essay, I recalled being in my mother’s hospital room during her final days before death. She was already on life support and was put into a medically induced coma to prevent her from feeling the pain her body was enduring. In the final hours of her life, it was decided that she would be removed from life support. The doctor ordered medications to be sent up from the hospital pharmacy that would be administered to help her slip away peacefully. God and my Mother obviously did not agree with this because, with the entire family crowded into the room to say our final good-byes while waiting for the doctor to disconnect the machines, my Mother died. I suppose from this experience, in certain circumstances, it is logical for individuals to provide consent for euthanasia when there is absolutely nothing else that can be done for them. If it is conducted without an individual’s consent, or if there were other alternatives for that individual, a medical professional...

History of Persuasion Essay

...First to start off everything in life has a history of some sort and that’s the same for persuasive writing which is a form that’s used so many times by so many people. I have used this style of writing on many occasions myself when I wanted to get my point across and show others that my way of thinking was a better idea or thought process than someone else. It’s very important to understand what being persuasive really is. Persuasion in itself including writing. It’s a form of expression getting someone or reasoning with them your way of thinking on an issue or argument. The Sophists were teachers and professors who came to Greece cites. Here’s a short introduction Fifth century B.C.E. “The word  sophists was still broadly applied to ‘wise men’, including poets such as Homer and Hesiod, the Seven Sages, the Ionian ‘physicists’ “ I thought this would be a good understanding of who these people were and their thoughts. A theorist that I decided to go with was Antiphon after doing some of my research I found him to be the most interesting. The bio of him is fairly unclear probably do to lost information in the past since he was in BC time before Christ. One thing that I found in my research that was very unresolved was whether or not he should be identified with Antiphon of Rhamnus who was a teacher of rhetoric. For those that don’t to what that means it’s a art of persuasive speaking and compositional techniques. Back to the man at hand the man was a member of the oligarchy...

Effective Persasion

...Amanda Lomas English 99 January 24, 2013 Effective Persuasion In the letter, “Letter from Birmingham Jail,” written by Martin Luther King, Jr., was written while king was in jail for being a part of the Birmingham Campaign, which was a non-violent protest to end segregation in the U.S. In the letter, King explain that he is disappointed in the clergy for attacking the members of the African American non-violent civil rights movement and that direct action is the only thing left for them to do. He goes on to say that he hopes “the dark clouds of racial prejudice will soon pass away.” In this letter, King has a very effective argument by using several different persuasive appeals. One persuasive appeal that King uses is called ethos. Ethos refers to the credibility and trustworthiness of the writer or speaker and can often be supported through style of the message and tone. Throughout the whole letter, King has a very even tone. At the beginning of the letter, he calmly explains why he is in jail and is not angry or mad and goes on to explain the four steps to his direct action. Having a calm approach like King shows in this letter makes the reader more inclined to listen rather than having a threatening or aggressive tone. Although he calmly explains himself at the beginning of the letter, King also has the right amount of firmness towards the middle of letter to make the reader believe that what he is saying to true. Towards the end of the letter King apologizes for...
