Persuasion It is interesting how much the media influences us everyday. Everyday we are bombarded with pictures, logos and ads to try and get us to buy things from these companies. These ads are made to make us want things, to make us think we need them or cannot live with out them. What lengths do these companies go to in order to get us to buy their product? I was watching television at home and a certain commercial stood out to me. This was a commercial about an Audi (car) it interested me right away since the commercial was about the terrible snowstorm we had last year and showed pictures that were on the news. I saw this commercial on April 11, 2011, it was about the Audi A4 but as I was watching the commercial I noticed it was not the Audi A4 in the commercial at all. It was a different car. The advertiser for this ad is trying to appeal to all age groups, but I can also tell that this ad is meant to lure you in by talking about our previous snowstorm. The commercial shows the Audi driving right out of the snow when as you know the snow had to have been 10+ inches from our storm. When showing that this car can drive out of the snow it was also showing all of the other cars on the road that could not drive out of the snow. They were stuck. When an advertiser shows you a commercial like this they are trying to accomplish a big thing, that their item is better then everyone else’s. They are trying to prove that the car they sell will come out of the snow better then the car every other company makes and sells, “our car can beat tragic storms while other cars stay stuck even with you inside them”. This advertisement uses different ways to persuade its audience a peripheral cue and a central route. The advertiser uses the peripheral route of persuasion when it shows how great the car looks. This car is a nice sleek car pulling out of the snow it is still in perfect just bought condition when it is coming out of feet of snow. Advertisers know just how to suck you in when you most vulnerable. Putting this well-known car out there makes it even easier for you to connect to it; so many people have an Audi brand car so why not get the newest the best car out there. In this advertisement another persuasion method used is the central route of persuasion. When using this form of persuasion it shows the features of this great car, like how it looks, how fast it drives, how it can come out of feet of snow. Once you have seen this ad you automatically start to think about this car with things like ”wow it only costs this much” or “this looks great for a deal like this” the viewer will start to ponder their thoughts and see if not only do they need a new car but also if this car will get the job done for them. Looking back at this advertisement I think it is very effective, when I saw this on television at my friend’s house my eyes were drawn to it right away. This was a great advertisement for the brand Audi, but the fact that they made a mistake on their car was wrong on their part. The commercial for this automobile was supposed to be about the Audi A4; in the commercial it was the Audi R8. The Audi R8 compared to the Audi A4 is a huge difference not only in price but in looks too. The Audi A4 is around $32,000 where the R8 is around $115,200, that is a big difference. These cars have different features. The R8 is like the Bentley version of this car where the A4 is like a normal midsized car. I was persuaded right away when I saw this advertisement, even though I knew I could not afford this car but to be honest they way they showed it I wanted it right away. I did want to buy this car but the car in the commercial. The car in the commercial was not the same price as the car it was advertising though. The bad thing about this advertisement, since the company decided to use a different car in their commercial I bet it could have been fought by people saying that they wanted the car in the commercial for the price of the Audi A4 since it was shown to be that car and at that price.

...I believe all persuasive approaches will be different depending on who I will be approaching in the audience. I order to have an effective approach I must know who I am approaching and how I will approach them. Considering that a message can be directed to a boss, a peer, a challenging person, or an open-minded person I must be able to construct or tailor my approach according to each person in order to get to the see my point of view and gain their support.
