My generation was raised around the concern of driving under the influence. They showed commercials, advertisements, and even sketches at school about its diverse risks. Drinking and driving stood one of the leading distresses of the era. Over the past decade, however, cell phones have become smaller and more convenient. Society and cellular devices have become one, like a dependence; lost without their phones in hand. Once texting developed into the craze of the decade, everything changed. Texting and driving became a major deal, with people oblivious to the destruction it was initiating around them. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), driving while texting is six times more dangerous than driving while intoxicated. They continue by stating that receiving a text takes a driver’s eyes from the road for an average of 4.6 seconds. If you are traveling at 55 mph, which is the equivalent of driving the length of a football field while blindfolded (Prof. David J. Hanson, n.d.). Now place yourself in the same situation, but on a highway containing turns and various other cars. Would you feel safe if you saw a blindfolded driver headed in your direction? 77 percent of young adults are confident that they can safely text while driving; 55 percent of them go so far to say they find it east to text while they drive (Marino, 2012). Arrogance has a lot to do with this mind set. No one wants to acknowledge that what they are doing is hazardous. Admitting their errors would mean they were wrong in what they were doing, and no one wants to be in the wrong. People will go out of their way to find justification for their actions, but there is nothing anyone can say that doesn’t have an alternative and safer
