Hockey has become a more expensive sport to play over the last years, and families can barely afford to keep their children in hockey anymore. People wonder why this is but there is a logical reason behind it. New technologies to improve the equipment have been invented, inflation on other things such as utilities, gas, food and salaries is the main reason for this problem. It has come to the point that families discourage their children to play ice hockey in favor of other, cheaper, sports. To buy new skates, a family is looking to invest between $500.00-$950.00 dollars, depending on the quality. Other popular sports that competes with hockey for practitioners have an massive advantage by being so much cheaper. All these factors cost money. According to John Deitsch article ‘’Why had Tier 3 Junior Hockey gotten so expensive?’’, Team fees for junior hockey teams has increased from around $2000.00 dollars during the 90’s to between $8000.00 to $10 000.00 today. Deitsch has based these number on his own experience. During the 90’s he played junior hockey and today he coaches at the same level, and he has 20 years of experience on the coaching bench. Cindy Pom does also write about the team fees in her article ‘’Breaking down the high cost of playing hockey in Toronto.’’ According to her numbers it cost around $3500 dollars in team fees, to play at a midget level which is children between the ages 9 to 15. This gives a good picture of how much money parents have to pay to have their children playing on a team.
