Japanese Interment Camps In 1941, the Japanese Army flew over Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, and bombed the U.S. military base stationed there. After this attack, many Americans were scared that there were some Japanese spies living among them. Two months after Pearl Harbor, President Roosevelt signed an executive order to relocate all Japanese – Americans to one of ten internment camps on the western side of the United States. The U.S. Military is not justified for doing this because they put many innocent Americans into these camps and they were difficult to live in. Right after the bombing of Pearl Harbor, many Americans freaked out. “Families were housed in barracks-style facilities divided into rooms averaging 20 × 16 feet per family and containing cots, a coal-burning stove, and a light bulb” (Fredriksen and Siegler). Most families went from having a family and a house to living in shambles. And while all the Japanese Americans were going through all this trouble, regular Americans were perfectly alright with this. “This large-scale imprisonment of U.S. citizens solely on the basis of their ancestry was met with almost universal approval by the non-Japanese-American population, and was accepted largely without question” (loc.gov). This is saying that while these certain Americans lives are being ruined by possibly something they did not commit or are not involved with, other Americans that were not affected do not care. When these people finally started living in these camps, they didn't have much. According to loc.gov, they only did not have running water, and were normally outside working most of the day. Although they were not mistreated, they still had armed guards watching them, making sure that they stayed in line.
